Bryce Young won’t play tonight as Panthers join Jets in resting starters

Panthers starting quarterback Bryce Young didn’t play last week. He won’t play tonight either.

The team announced 38 players who won’t suit up tonight, and Young and backup quarterback Andy Dalton are among them. That means Jack Plummer and Jake Luton will get the work against the Jets.

The teams’ best players got enough work in a joint practice this week to sit tonight as the Jets have no starters playing and the Panthers only two.

Antonio Pierce: Raiders will pick a starting QB in the next couple days

“We’ve seen enough reps, two games,” Pierce said. “Our guys are not playing in the third preseason game, our starters, so we’ll sleep on it and make a decision within the next couple days.”

Minshew completed 10 of 21 passes for 95 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions against the Cowboys. O’Connell completed 14 of 20 passes for 96 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

 

“Fired up” Tua Tagovailoa goes 5-for-5 with a touchdown pass in preseason debut

In his first game action as a guy with a contract carrying a $53 million annual new-money average, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa played accordingly.

In one eleven-play drive against the Commanders, Tua completed five of five passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.

Coach Mike McDaniel was impressed, both by the performance and the mindset.

“I thought it was probably the least amount of nerves that he’s had the first time stepping out on the football field,” McDaniel told reporters. “I thought it was just us executing some of our day-one concepts and he didn’t force any issues. I really liked his decisions. I liked his ball placement. I thought he did a good job in his, I think, 11 reps. So it was nice to see him out there and connecting some passes. I know he was fired up.”

The touchdown pass to River Cracraft capped a drive that lacked star players like receiver Tyreek Hill, receiver Jaylen Waddle, and tackle Terron Armstead.

“That’s not the first time we’ve not had those guys in there, and we’ve played and we’ve scored,” Tagovailoa said. “Would it be good to have those guys? It would be great to have those guys. It opens up our game plan for a lot of deep things, and it opens up the run game as well with the two shells that we get with those guys in. But outside of that, football is football with whoever you’ve got in there. You’ve got to call the play. You’ve got to see it, envision it, and then you go through your keys. If it’s one high, this is how I’m going to read it. If it’s two high, this is how I’m going to read it regardless of who’s in.”

That might be Tua’s only preseason action. The wrap things up next weekend against the Buccaneers. “We’ll assess what happens then, and we’ll see if we need any more or not,” Tagovailoa said.

The bigger focus will be three weeks from today, when the Jaguars come to town to start the regular season. Then, only days later, the Dolphins will face the Bills in prime time.

Minshew Mania is officially hitting Las Vegas.

Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce named Gardner Minshew the team’s starting quarterback in his Sunday video conference.

“A lot of things went into it. It wasn’t based on [the preseason game] last night — there’s a lot of factors,” Pierce said, mentioning he, G.M. Tom Telesco, and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy discussed the decision this morning. “So, we feel like Garnder gives us the best opportunity to get off to a fast start and that’s who we’re going with. We support him. Our team’s opportunity it, our staff’s behind it, the organization’s behind it.”

Minshew’s experience was one of the deciding factors, Pierce said.

“The operation, the processing — just everything we saw in practice. Some of it showed up in the games. A lot of stuff we can get better at. I don’t think anything here is a finished product. But based off of where we want to go in the first quarter of the season, we feel like Gardner gives us the best opportunity.

“[H]is personality is infectious. His energy is infectious. His leadership is infectious. Things [for] improvement — footwork, in the pocket, staying on script. There is some magic about him when he does break the pocket and does his thing. But there’s a lot of times where if the first or second read is there, we’ve got to let it rip. So, he understands that. And more importantly, taking care of the football.”

“First and foremost, those two gentlemen are professionals,” Pierce said. “The way they’ve handled this competition has really resonated throughout our building, especially our staff and our team. They’ve cheered each other on. They’ve been good teammates. They’ve brought out the best version of each other in practices and I think in the games. They both took it on the chin like a champ.

“And I told them, just both be ready. We [see] in the National Football League, you never know. But Aidan is a young player that has tremendous upside that I think will still be a starter here in this league — I think will be a starter at some point in this league, if it’s this year or next year. But he will play in games. And I think Gardner has done a good job of being that older presence, because he’s played a couple of years in the league and he’s been through some adversity. So that’s been good for Aidan.”

Jerod Mayo: Patriots still don’t know who our Week 1 starting quarterback will be

Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye remain in competition to be the Patriots’ starting quarterback when the regular season starts against the Bengals on September 8.

That’s the word from Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, who said today that he hasn’t decided whether Brissett or Maye will start Week One, and won’t decide until after the preseason finale.

“We still don’t know right now,” Mayo said. “We have another preseason game, and then a week after that. When I know, I’ll let you know.”

That’s a departure from what Mayo was saying for most of the offseason, when he has indicated that Brissett is the starter and Maye is still developing. But Mayo said today that he likes the progress Maye has made.

“Right now it’s all going the right way, right direction, and hopefully he continues to get better,” Mayo said.

Brissett remains the favorite to get the Week One start, but Mayo is going to take his time before letting the Bengals and the rest of us know who will be under center when the season starts.

Sean Payton: Bo Nix played well, but I’m not announcing a starting QB yet

Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix turned in a fine preseason performance on Sunday night, but he hasn’t earned the Broncos’ starting job. Yet.

Denver head coach Sean Payton said after the game that he liked what he saw from Nix but isn’t making any announcements about who the starting quarterback is.

“He’s played well. I’m not announcing any starting quarterback tonight,” Payton said. “I’ll let you guys know when the time comes. I thought he played well.”

Payton said he also liked what Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson did in the preseason win over the Packers.

“Their job is to lead the offense downfield and score points, and they all had touchdown drives,” Payton said.

Realistically, it’s hard to believe Stidham or Wilson has any chance of winning the job. Nix has looked the best of the three of them in the preseason, and the Broncos wouldn’t have drafted Nix with the 12th overall pick in April if they didn’t see him as a starting quarterback. Payton isn’t ready to make an announcement yet, but expect the announcement that Nix is QB1 to come before the regular season starts.

The Washington Commanders finally made official what has been expected since the NFL draft: Jayden Daniels is their starting quarterback.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn announced the move Monday, though Daniels, the second overall pick in April, had been working with the first team exclusively in training camp for the past three weeks.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh was beaming upon his quarterback's return.

"I thought I heard music," Harbaugh said. "Voices of angels maybe. It felt great."

Herbert has been sidelined since the start of August with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot, prompting the Chargers to proceed with caution throughout training camp and the preseason. With Herbert out, Los Angeles has been playing its preseason games with Easton Stick as their starter under center, and signed XFL/UFL standout Luis Perez less than two weeks ago to backfill their quarterback depth chart.

QB Colt McCoy retiring after 12 seasons playing in NFL

Colt McCoy has spent the majority of the last two decades in the football spotlight. The stage will soon change for him.

McCoy is calling it a career, trading his helmet and pads for a microphone after 14 years (12 season) in the NFL. McCoy told NFL Network's Peter Schrager on Monday that he is retiring from the game and transitioning to the broadcast booth, where he'll join NBC Sports for its expanded Big Ten football coverage this season.

Josh Allen has “no problem” with his contract despite other QBs passing him

When Josh Allen signed his $258 extension in 2021, it gave the Bills’ quarterback the second-highest annual average in the NFL. He’s no longer still there, passed by one quarterback after another.

So, while Allen is a top-five quarterback, his annual average of $43 million ranks only 13th.

He is underpaid.

“Listen, everyone’s going to have their day,” Allen said Tuesday, via Jonah Bronstein of WIVB. “I’m happy that everyone’s getting what they’re worth, right? And I think that as the game progresses and guys keep getting paid, the market is the market.

“I’ve got no problem with where I’m at right now. And, you know what, I had my day a couple years ago, and I’m sure someday I’ll have it again. But I think the main thing is the main thing, and that’s playing football to the best of my ability, and everything else will take care of itself.”

Allen, 28, has finished in the top five in MVP voting three times in the past four seasons. The Bills have five consecutive playoff appearances.

Steelers QB battle: Bill Cowher, Bill Belichick both agree on starter between Russell Wilson, Justin Fields

While everyone seems to be talking about Mike Tomlin's decision regarding his quarterback situation, Bill Cowher and Bill Belichick don't feel like it's a tough decision at all.

Both former coaches gave similar answers when asked who they would start between Steelers quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Wilson has maintained the pole position over Fields, despite the latter's impressive play during training camp. Neither quarterback, however, has yet to lead a drive in the preseason that has ended in the opponent's end zone, as both Wilson and Fields have been the victims of subpar offensive line play.

"You start the season with Russell," Cowher said on "The Pat McAfee Show," via the Tribune-Review. "If Justin Fields starts as the second guy, have a package of plays. If all of a sudden you need a spark -- something to get your offense going again -- put [Fields] in. If you have to take Russell out, he's been there before. It's not going to destroy his confidence. I don't want to start Justin Fields and then feel like I have to make a change and take him out. Limit the expectations on Justin Fields. Let him be Justin Fields."

Belichick, the longtime Patriots coach who faced Cowher's Steelers twice in AFC Championship games (winning both), agreed with his former adversary.

"I think they have bigger problems than the quarterback position. That's my opinion," Belichick also told McAfee. "I think that the defense is a pretty solid unit. The offensive line had a hard time being consistent. They lost the tackle [Troy Fautanu]. Now they've got [Broderick] Jones over there playing right tackle. Dan [Moore Jr.] is playing left tackle. Inside they have a rookie center, [Zach] Frazier. He's got a way to go. The guards, they've had some issues, too, in the first two preseason games."

As Belichick alluded to, the Steelers' recent issues on the offensive line aren't helping either quarterback. Fortunately, some of Pittsburgh's problems up front may be short term. Fautanu, who has been sidelined for over a week with an injury, should be back for Week 1. Starting tackle Broderick Jones has been playing through an elbow injury that was sustained during a recent practice. Frazier has promise as Pittsburgh's starting center, and fellow rookie Mason McCormick also has potential.

Cowher has first-hand experience when it comes to the Steelers' current situation at quarterback. In 1996, Cowher decided to start veteran Mike Tomczak over Kordell Stewart, a then-second-year player who was vastly more athletic than the 34-year-old Tomczak.

Tomczak played OK while remaining the team's quarterback the entire season. Stewart provided occasional sparks in a limited role as the Steelers went 10-6 before bowing out in the divisional round of the playoffs. A similar situation may play out this season with Wilson starting and Fields.

At this point, it seems that Tomlin's plan is to continue to ride with Wilson, a player whom Belichick feels is more than capable of executing the Steelers' new offense.

"Arthur [Smith] is a great fit for that offense -- for what Coach Tomlin wants," Belichick said. "They need to get the running game going. They have good backs. They need to get those backs started. Russell's good out of the pocket. He'll be able to hit those play action and passes."

Broncos head coach Sean Payton announced on Wednesday that rookie Bo Nix will be the team's starting quarterback for the 2024 regular season.

Nix, the No. 12 overall pick in April's draft, impressed in two preseason outings this month to beat out veterans Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson for QB1 in the Mile High City.

 

Browns' Deshaun Watson limited in practice with arm soreness

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was limited in practice Wednesday because of "general arm soreness," according to coach Kevin Stefanski.

"I decided to just hold back a little bit with him, but not overly concerned," Stefanski said after practice.

Stefanski previously said the plan was to play Watson in the preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday and that all starters should expect to play. But after Wednesday's practice, Stefanski wouldn't divulge his plans for Watson.

"I'm not going to get into Seattle plans just yet," Stefanski said.

Watson, who underwent season-ending surgery to his throwing shoulder last November, took a few reps early in team drills Wednesday before ceding the remainder of the first-team reps to backup Jameis Winston.

Watson has missed only one training camp practice. He did not play in the first two preseason games.

"You're a quarterback. You're throwing a lot, so you get sore," Stefanski said.

Meanwhile, running back Pierre Strong Jr. left practice in an ambulance with an injury to his ribs, Stefanski said. Strong appeared to sustain the injury during individual drills.

And cornerback Denzel Ward remains in concussion protocol, according to Stefanski, a week after he was shaken up during a collision with wide receiver Elijah Moore.

Broncos HC Sean Payton shares when he knew rookie Bo Nix was his QB

On Wednesday, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton named rookie quarterback Bo Nix the starter, which isn't surprising. Payton knew he was his guy early in the draft process.

On a Tuesday episode of The Athletic's "Scoop City" podcast with Dianna Russini and Chase Daniel, Payton said he visited Eugene, Oregon, in March to watch Nix's pro day and hold a private workout the following morning. After Nix's first 16 passes in the private workout, Payton told general manager George Paton, "This is the guy."

During the NFL Draft, the Broncos called the New York Jets (pick No. 11) and the Las Vegas Raiders (pick No. 13) to gauge their interest in Nix, via Russini. After determining the Jets weren't taking a QB in the first round and the Raiders didn't want to move up, Denver took him with the 12th overall pick.

While Payton liked Nix, he didn't hand him the job. The HC listed him as QB3 on the first unofficial depth chart and had him compete with Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham. However, the rookie aced all tests, helping him win the QB battle.

"You're wondering why the Broncos made this decision. How did Bo Nix go from third-string QB — or whatever — to starter?" NFL Media's Ian Rapoport said Wednesday on "The Insiders." "It's really pretty simple. Every test, he passed. From rookie minicamp to OTAs to training camp and [preseason] games, on-platform throws, off-platform throws, it's a really complex offense. He seems to have devoured it and deciphered it."

Through two preseason games, Nix has completed 23-of-30 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns, posting a solid 116.7 passer rating. If he stays on the right track, Nix could show why he convinced Payton he's the answer after 16 throws in the predraft workout.

Deshaun Watson back to full practice participation

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson’s practice participation on Wednesday was limited, but he was back on track Thursday.

Watson didn’t do much in team drills Wednesday because of what head coach Kevin Stefanski called “general arm soreness.” Stefanski said he wasn’t concerned about Watson’s condition moving forward and Thursday’s update on Watson’s condition from the team backed up that lack of worry.

“After resting during the later portion of practice yesterday, Deshaun resumed throwing and took his normal full complement of reps today with the first team,” the Browns said in a statement, via Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan.

The Browns did not say if Wilson will play in the team’s final preseason game. That game will take place in Seattle on Saturday night.
