    Speaking of Addison...

Minnesota Vikings Star Addison Arrested for DUI

Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Jordan Addison was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after being found asleep behind the wheel near Los Angeles International Airport, the Los Angeles Daily News reported Sunday.

At approximately 11:06 pm Friday, the Los Angeles Communications Center notified the California Highway Patrol (CHP) about a disabled vehicle blocking lanes from the westbound Glen Anderson (105) Freeway to northbound Sepulveda Boulevard, the arrest report read.

Officers responding to the scene found a white Rolls-Royce obstructing a lane of the freeway, with Addison asleep behind the wheel, the CHP stated.

Addison, 22, who played at the University of Southern California, was arrested at approximately 11:36 pm after a DUI investigation. He was released at 1:36 am on Saturday. No further information was immediately available from the CHP on Sunday.

Addison, while reporting to his first training camp with the Vikings on July 20, 2023, was pulled over in a Lamborghini Urus and given a citation for speeding and reckless driving.

Report: Vikings brass 'incredibly pissed off' by Jordan Addison's recent arrest

Jordan Addison's recent arrest has left Vikings personnel very upset.

Addison was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Los Angeles on Friday night after falling asleep behind the wheel of his car and blocking a lane of traffic. It's the second driving incident for the 22-year-old receiver in as many years, as he was cited for driving 140 MPH in Minnesota last summer. It also came one week after his teammate, rookie Khyree Jackson, was killed in a car crash in Maryland that police said may have involved alcohol.

"I can promise you, there are many people with the Vikings (who are) incredibly pissed off," said KSTP's Darren Wolfson on SKOR North.

The Addison situation has to be highly disappointing to the organization for a number of reasons, even beyond it being his second incident and coming in the wake of Jackson's tragic passing. The NFL and the Vikings both provide significant education and resources to their players when it comes to these kinds of things. There are all kinds of services they can call to avoid driving under the influence.

Wolfson also noted that "a likely suspension is coming" for Addison from either the team or the league. That makes sense, considering it's his second incident in as many years. The severity of that suspension could depend on the details of Addison's arrest, which have not yet become available. He was released two hours after being arrested and the initial police report did not include any information about his blood alcohol content. If he was under the influence of marijuana instead of alcohol, that might be viewed slightly differently. Either way, absent a medical emergency, there's no excuse for falling asleep at the wheel, so some sort of punishment is presumably coming.

Addison recently archived all of his Instagram posts in which he's wearing a Vikings uniform, then later brought them back. He also changed his profile picture to an image seemingly acknowledging the incident. As of Tuesday evening, his IG and Twitter/X accounts were fully deactivated.

Breaking: Minnesota Sports Fan uncovers new details regarding Jordan Addison DUI

This evening, however, Minnesota Sports Fan was able to get its hands on the same California Highway Patrol “arrest report” that other media outlets have, along with some newly uncovered details. The CHP report that media outlets received looks more like a press release than it does a police report.

Mostly, it’s a one paragraph summary of the events that night. It also includes Jordan’s full name, his city of residence, DOB, description and location of arrest (etc). Here is the paragraph that news outlets were writing their stories off of, over the weekend.

“On July 12, 2024, at approximately 2306 hours, the Los Angeles Communications Center (LACC) advised that there was a disabled vehicle blocking lanes on I-105 westbound to Sepulveda Boulevard northbound. CHP West Los Angeles Officer responded to the area and observed a white Rolls-Royce blocking the #1 lane of I-105 westbound to Sepulveda Boulevard northbound, with the driver asleep behind the wheel. After a DUI investigation was completed, the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence at approximately 2336 hours.”

Minnesota Vikings Jordan Addison “cited and released” on suspicion of DUI
After confirming with the LA County jail, that Jordan Addison was never booked into their system on Friday night, Minnesota Sports Fan was able to get ahold of someone inside the California Highway Patrol. That’s where MSF learned the reason why Addison was never booked: “Cite and Release”.

In California, cite and release is the practice of police issuing you a citation for suspected unlawful conduct, but not bringing you to jail for a formal booking. Instead, you are released on the condition that you make a signed promise show up to court, later on. The process is used mainly for low-level offenses, such as misdemeanors or infractions.

    Shouse California Law Firm

Because Jordan Addison was a first time offender, and not considered a threat, he qualified for “cite and release”, and took advantage. After arresting him on suspicion of DUI, officers released Addison to family and/or friends. No booking, no mug shot. Just a court date and citation.

Minnesota Sports Fan has also filed a public records request, for more information. CHP, however, does not legally have to honor that request for 10 days.

Kevin O’Connell: Timing of J.J. McCarthy becoming QB1 can’t be written on a board

Late in Minnesota’s offseason program, head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters that veteran Sam Darnold would be the team’s starting quarterback heading into training camp over the team’s rookie No. 10 overall pick J.J. McCarthy.

But given McCarthy’s draft status, it’s clear that the Michigan product will take over as QB1 sooner than later.

In a long piece from Kevin Seifert of ESPN detailing the Vikings’ transition from Kirk Cousins to McCarthy under O’Connell and G.M. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, the head coach noted that his previous experiences with coaching young QBs have left him more cautious. To that end, O’Connell has left the timetable for McCarthy becoming Minnesota’s starter open-ended.

O’Connell said McCarthy will be ready when “the comfort level that he has within our offense and his ability to then translate it to adverse situations and difficult aspects of playing quarterback in the NFL aren’t magnified by inexperience.

“But I want to be very clear that the expectation is for this player to not be perfect. … He’s going to have growing pains, he’s going to learn on the fly. I’m not trying to remove that aspect of it, either, but [deciding when he will play] is not something you can write up on a board. It’s a feeling.”

In their two seasons together, O’Connell and Adofo-Mensah have compiled a 20-14 record with one NFC North title. While the Vikings were in the hunt for a postseason berth late in the season despite Kirk Cousins’ Achilles tear in 2023, the team still finished 7-10. In the NFL, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that O’Connell’s job status could come into question with a poor record in 2024.

But O’Connell said his priority is putting McCarthy in the best position to succeed.

“It’s just more about what is in the best interest of the organization,” O’Connell said. “Those circumstances cannot affect what J.J.'s development plan is or any other player on the team for that matter. It just can’t be something that selfishly ever impacts that decision.

“That really won’t change because, and I don’t know if it’s the former quarterback in me or not, but I do feel an obligation to have the best interests of not only J.J. but our entire team, at heart, when we make that decision.”

Report: J.J. McCarthy agrees to terms with Vikings

The Vikings have two of the league’s three remaining unsigned draft picks, but one of them should be off that list soon.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that quarterback J.J. McCarthy has agreed to a deal with the team. The 10th overall pick will sign a four-year, fully-guaranteed contract worth $21.85 million that includes a $12.71 million signing bonus and the Vikings will have a team option for a fifth season.

Minnesota’s other unsigned pick is their other first-round pick Dallas Turner. With McCarthy done, the edge rusher also seems likely to come to terms before the Vikings rookies report to camp on Sunday.

With McCarthy’s contract status settled, he’ll turn his full attention to competing with Sam Darnold for the starting quarterback job. Darnold is currently atop the depth chart, but McCarthy wasn’t drafted at the top of the first round to spend extended time on the bench.

The Minnesota Vikings signed one of their prized draft picks on Sunday evening. The franchise officially inked defensive end Dallas Turner, who many expect to contend for Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2024. The news was relayed by Aaron Wilson.

The No. 17 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft signed a four-year, fully guaranteed deal worth $15.76 million that includes a $8.28 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
