Its mind boggling too me also. Pay the guy and pay him now! Its a no-brainer. Why this is taking so long only raises the price for the Vikings as other WR's get extended. The Vikings by waiting are shooting themselves in the foot and the longer this goes, Jefferson must be thinking wtf is going on?

Im lost and confused... per usual.

The Vikings recently made a low-key major signing in recent days when Minnesota went out and signed guard Dalton Risner to a one-year deal. But that signing was exactly the signing Vikings fans have been waiting to hear.

Fans are patiently—or eagerly—waiting for the Vikings to sign star receiver Justin Jefferson to a long-term, mega-deal. According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, the Vikings could make a deal with Jefferson in the near future. He says it will be a market-altering deal when it happens.

“This is going to be a market-altering deal when it does happen with Minnesota,” Fowler said on SportsCenter. “I’m told the Vikings are pretty motivated here. They want to try to get something done, they’ve been in active discussions with Jefferson and his representation. So this could not only be making him the highest-paid wide receiver but the highest-paid non-quarterback, potentially. Nick Bosa makes $34 million a year, we’ll see if he can get to that threshold, but this should get done at some point in the coming weeks and months this summer, that’s the Vikings’ goal, so they’re pretty dedicated to doing it.”

Eagles’ receiver A.J. Brown is the highest-paid receiver in the game, making $32 million a year. 49ers’ defensive end Nick Bosa is the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league at $34 million a year. So you should expect $35 million or more when Jefferson does ink his new deal with the Vikings.

N’Keal Harry had enough talent for the wide receiver position that he was a first-round draft pick in 2019. But that talent has never translated into becoming a good wide receiver at the next level. So now he’s going to try another position.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said today that Harry is moving to tight end.

“N’Keal is really fired up about it,” O’Connell said. “He has attacked the process, long before we even got started in the offseason program. But you’re hoping to see the receiving traits lead the way early on, as they get a little more comfort in maybe having their hand down, being a part of run schemes, the different kind of run schemes that we’re implementing, and N’Keal has shown that. . . . At this stage in his career a position change is unique, but we’re hoping we’re developing a guy who can be a real third-down weapon, red-zone weapon, with his skill set.”

O’Connell noted that starting tight end T.J. Hockenson is still recovering from a torn ACL, and it’s been helpful to have Harry as another tight end in the offseason program. Whether Harry can play the tight end position well enough to make the regular-season roster remains to be seen.

Justin Jefferson plans to be “main person” in J.J. McCarthy’s ear

The Vikings and wide receiver Justin Jefferson finally reached the finish line in their contract negotiations on Monday and the result was a four-year, $140 million contract that confirms Jefferson is a centerpiece of the franchise.

Minnesota’s hope is that quarterback J.J. McCarthy will become another one and getting the deal done means Jefferson is now able to fully turn his attention toward helping to get the first-round pick ready for life in the NFL. On Tuesday, Jefferson said at a press conference that he loves the “new energy” and confidence that McCarthy has brought to the locker room and said that he relishes the chance to guide the rookie into his first pro season.

“I talked to J.J. as soon as he got drafted. I told him confidence is key, just coming into this league with confidence and being able to have that leadership just right off the bat being a rookie,” Jefferson said. “There’s going to be people to come and help. Of course, I’m going to be that main person to be in his ear and try to teach him and try to prepare him for what we’re about to go through. But I told him this league is tough. It’s not an easy job to come out here and perform at the highest ability, especially as a rookie. But I definitely will be that main person that he can lean on and help throughout the way.”

The Vikings had a veteran quarterback in Kirk Cousins during Jefferson’s first four seasons, so it’s a new experience for Jefferson to be in the mentor role. He said on Tuesday that “it comes with being a leader of the team” and Jefferson will undoubtedly be in that role for the remainder of his time with the Vikings.

"Just being the highest paid just comes with being a leader," Jefferson told reporters on Tuesday. "I always said, I always preached it: The money never was a big thing for me. It was mostly just solidifying myself as the top receiver in the league.

"Of course, I want to be holding that gold jacket when my career is all over with. It's gonna happen, the contract talks are gonna happen when you're performing at this type of level. But just like I said plenty and plenty of times, there's more to it than just the money for me. I want to be the best player to ever do it. In order to do that, I've got to keep performing at my highest ability. With that, money is gonna be involved, but that wasn't my main concern."

"I feel like, just with last year, with all the things that happened, all of the quarterback changes that happened, that didn't really affect me that much," Jefferson said. "It really didn't matter who was going to be able to throw the ball. I'm always confident in myself and confident in who was throwing the ball to give me those types of opportunities and let me just go make a play for the team."

Vikings HC makes telling comments about Sam Darnold, J.J. McCarthy competition

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell indicated to Adam Schein of SiriusXM's "Mad Dog Sports Radio" that veteran Sam Darnold has a significant advantage over rookie J.J. McCarthy regarding a quarterback competition that may already be settled.

"I think he's learned a lot along the way and I'm really excited about the time in his career in which we're getting him in our building," O'Connell said about Darnold, per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website. "I feel strongly about his ability to continue his, even at this point in his career, continue his development and what can he become within playing quarterback in our offense with the type of players we have around him, all well knowing that we're going to have a competitive environment with J.J. McCarthy, with (backups) Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall."

The third overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, Darnold failed to cement himself as a long-term answer at the position during stints with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers. He later received positive reviews for his work as a backup with the San Francisco 49ers last season. He signed a one-year, $10M deal with the Vikings in March before they moved up a single spot in this year's draft order to take McCarthy.

Kevin Seifert of ESPN and Alec Lewis of The Athletic are among those who have said that Darnold seems on track to start Minnesota's regular-season opener at the New York Giants on Sept. 8. Patra mentioned that "the Vikings have gone out of their way since the draft to avoid putting pressure on McCarthy -- something new QB coach Josh McCown learned first-hand with (Carolina Panthers quarterback) Bryce Young last year."

McCown touched upon that very subject in May.

"I really feel like our job is to build the best possible environment that we can, coach at a really high level, have a really structured plan to where these guys know exactly what the expectations are every day, and then go out and compete and just go play football," O'Connell continued.

While O'Connell added that his quarterbacks will "compete it out every day and see kind of where the chips fall" during training camp and the preseason, it sounds like the starting job is Darnold's to lose heading into the summer.

In my opinion, there is no QB competition. Darnold will be and should be the starter, period. JJ will observe, grow and acclimate to the NFL with some time and thats good enough for me. I just hope there are no injuries or there may be a force-up in the QB room and that isnt a real favorable situation, but It could happen. Mullens or Hall will tread water, but JJ McCarthy's acclimation need's to NOT be rushed.

Minnesota Vikings provide a phenomenal situation for Aaron Jones

The running game for the Minnesota Vikings was flat-out abysmal in 2023. They were 29th in rushing yards per game while being tied for last in rushing touchdowns with a paltry seven. Their starting running back Alexander Mattison had a whopping zero rushing touchdowns, which caused them to move on this past offseason.

With the NFL Draft class weaker at the running back position, the Vikings decided to pursue the position heavily in free agency and struck a deal with former Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones on a one-year contract worth up to $7 million. It's structured so that the Vikings could extend Jones easily if he thrives with the Vikings.

Aaron Jones is in a great situation with the Minnesota Vikings
Coming to Minnesota is an interesting move for Jones. They will be relying on him a lot to elevate the running game and there is a path to making that happen.

Matt Hamilton from the Kay Adams Show highlighted just that and it revolves around light boxes.

"If you look at the construction of the offense with Jefferson and Addison, they're not going to see a lot of teams loading up to stop the run against them. They didn't last year but they were one of the least efficient teams running against lighter boxes. And that's where Aaron Jones thrives. Check this out. Since 2019, only Nick Chubb and Jonathan Taylor have averaged more yards per rush against six and seven man boxes than Aaron Jones. He absolutely goes off when he has some space to work with because of his combination of vision, speed, and power."

The element of lighter boxes is very intriguing for Jones and the Vikings. Now, will defense feel comfortable with lighter boxes knowing the presence of Jones is there along with no T.J. Hockenson and a new quarterback? I think it's a little too early to say defenses will use lighter boxes with the same amount of frequency with those factors.

However, once Sam Darnold (theoretically) gets into a groove and Hockenson returns, this could be a major storyline for the Vikings moving forward. Having a potent passing attack along with an improved running game could make the Vikings a force offensively.

We can only hope. A running game of any kind will surely help Darnold and the rest of the offense.

Jordan Addison Showing Superstar Potential, Creating Buzz Inside Minnesota Vikings Facility

The Minnesota Vikings have the NFL’s best receiver in Justin Jefferson, which is why he’s now the highest-paid non-QB in the league. But we can’t forget about Jordan Addison, either.

Addison’s rookie season left no questions unanswered after becoming the 23rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. While Vikings fans have been forced to witness other first-round receivers struggling in their debut NFL season, from Troy Williamson to Laquon Treadwell, that wasn’t the case for Addison.

In addition to racking up 911 yards on 70 receptions, Addison also led all rookies with 10 touchdown catches, which ranked third in the NFL. The former USC star no doubt had an impressive season, especially for a first-year player, but he did so while being just 21 years old.

As he enters his second season, Addison knows what to expect in the NFL. He’s already experienced the size, speed, and strength differences from college to the pros, but it didn’t faze him as a rookie. Yet, being able to get a feel for his opponents only helped him further prepare for the future as he went back to the lab this past offseason, and the early returns have been extremely positive during team workouts.

Earlier this week, The Athletic’s Alec Lewis noted Addison’s standout play so far this summer.

“Addison was one of the standouts at OTAs. He has a talent — like Jefferson — in that he is deceptively fast, peeling out of routes without false steps or a loss of speed. Enhanced knowledge of O’Connell’s system should allow him to confound defenses further. He and Jefferson will be on the minds of every opposing DC.”

That alone should have Vikings fans excited about the offense’s potential, no matter who the starting quarterback is. While it’s great to hear about Addison’s advanced ability as a route-runner, what Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer had to say was even more electrifying.

    Jordan Addison showing WR1 potential?

When the Minnesota Vikings drafted Jordan Addison, everyone knew the expectations. He didn’t need to be as good as Justin Jefferson; no one could. All the Vikings were looking for was a long-term replacement for Adam Thielen as a complementary receiver who could run every route on the tree.

One year into the experiment, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s decision to let Thielen leave, where he signed a three-year, $25 million contract with the Carolina Panthers, looks like a brilliant move. For the record, the Vikings have Addison for four years, at a total of $13 million, and his upcoming cap hit is just $3.1 million, which is much less than Thielen’s $9.9 million cap hit for the 2024 season.

But again, what’s most impressive is just Addison’s play. Yet the real kicker is that we haven’t seen the Vikings’ receiver anywhere near his best form quite yet.

What’s most exciting is that Addison’s been working his butt off all summer long, and as many observers have noticed, he’s ready to take the next step from star to superstar.

“Jordan Addison’s growth has created buzz in the Vikings’ facility. With Jefferson away for most of the offseason program, Addison’s progress really showed up—he came back physically stronger in April while maintaining the burst and body control that made him a first-round pick in 2023. And without Jefferson around, it was easy to visualize how Addison has the ability to be a real No. 1 down the line, and create a pick-your-poison problem for teams trying to defend the former USC standout, Jefferson and tight end T.J. Hockenson all at once.”

Seriously, the Vikings’ skill position group should be illegal. Defenses have to put two or more defenders on Jefferson, which frees up advantageous one-on-one matchups for Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson and Addison.

Then there’s always the threat of Aaron Jones offering another mismatch out of the backfield. There’s only one ball to go around, but with this type of treasure chest at their reach, how could Sam Darnold and J.J. McCarthy fail?
