The NFL announced on Friday that players will be permitted to wear Guardian Caps during regular-season games in an effort to increase player health and safety and prevent head injuries.

"We now have two years of data showing significant concussion reductions among players who wear Guardian Caps during practice so players will be permitted to wear the cap during games this upcoming season," Jeff Miller, NFL EVP overseeing player health and safety, said in a statement on Friday. "Additionally, there are new helmets this year that provide as much – if not more – protection than a different helmet model paired with a Guardian Cap. These developments represent substantial progress in our efforts to make the game safer for players."

I cant stand this decision. Those caps are hideous. Furthermore, they obviously would see a reduction in concussion numbers with those caps because they are pillowed and the fact is they were tested in PRACTICE when it was mandated a few years back. No one is trying to kill their teammates in practice, at least not all the time. I had an epiphany thought today too... if they didnt tackle each other, there would nearly be zero concussions, so lets just call it quits.

I swear, if I see players wearing those things, I just might have a conniption. And make a bright orange jersey for the guy that wears one in game and may it say SISSY in bold letters across his back!

    I have spoken.

Like Billy Chrystal as Fernando once said "It is better to look good than to feel good".
Those things look dumb and I don't know if they help anyway.

I don’t give a shit what they look like, if it helps to avoid any Browns players from missing unnecessary time due to a possible concussion, I say make them mandatory. They’ve been changing the rules of the game for so long to avoid injury that it isn’t the same game I grew up watching. I’d rather see a silly looking helmet than another dumbass rule enacted.

So why allow these caps if you can just ban every helmet worse than ones that work just as well?

Texans receiver Tank Dell was shot on Saturday night in Florida. The Texans announced the news on Sunday.

“We have been made aware that Tank Dell was a victim of a shooting in Sanford, Fla. last night,” the team said. “He sustained a minor wound but that been released from the hospital and he is in good spirits. We are in contact with him and his family and will provide more updates when appropriate but we ask that you please respect his privacy at this time.”

Aaron Wilson of KPRC adds that Dell was an “innocent bystander,” during a mass shooting at a nightclub. He was not involved in any altercation, per Wilson, but was simply caught in the crossfire.

Ten reportedly were shot in the incident, and a 16-year-old is under arrest. All victims suffered non-life-threatening wounds, mainly to the lower extremities.

I agree! If the testing shows the new helmet is more effective, mandate the new helmet instead of re-inventing the sport by changing so many rules.

The Pats have agreed to terms on a four-year extension with defensive tackle Christian Barmore that's worth up to $92 million, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported, per sources informed of the deal.

My thoughts drift toward did the NFL make this decision based on game data with the Guardian cap versus without the Guardian cap? If so, the the only data available WITH the Guardian cap would be pre-season games - typically played with much lower speed and resulting force.

If they based it on practice data - that makes the comparison data even worse.

[ya, I'm still on the right side of the grass.]

And... if they are using the preseason game data, are they comparing the results to preseason games from prior years or using the rate of head injuries in regular season games?

Flip side... I'd strongly consider making these mandatory for players who already have a history of concussions / symptoms.

I remember a few players that didnt when the NHL was switching over, ie McTavish, but when it eventually became mandatory I didnt mind and dont really understand the comparison to football to be honest.

    Good to see you.

As I understand it the only data being used was the guardian cap vs the standard NFL helmet during the last 2 year period the caps were made mandatory during training camps and practices. So no data was used in comparison to the in game concussion percentages. IMO, if you ran around practice with a pillow duct tapped to your head, youd probably see a reduction also. ;)

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Kelce and the Chiefs have agreed to a two-year contract extension that will make him the league’s highest-paid tight end.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kelce’s extension will keep him tied to the Chiefs through the 2027 season and it has changed his compensation for the next couple of seasons as well. According to multiple reports, Kelce is now set to make $34.25 million in salary over the next two years.

His entire $17 million salary for the 2024 season is guaranteed and the $17.25 million for the 2025 season will be fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2025 league year. The tweak gives Kelce the highest average annual salary for tight ends over the next two seasons.

Good Trivia question and well done you got it right...........Craig MacTavish and it was 1997 the last time he wore a Helmet and he was playing for the NY Rangers.

I don't think Jean was comparing Hockey to Football but he was making a Fact.........Helmets were Mandatory in 1943 in Football and 1997 in the NHL.

This is a great drawing by Frederic Remington in 1893..........I think it is a College game ? Maybe Princeton vs Rutgers and look at the Fans lining the Bowl and the Goal Post .....lol

The difference is NO Helmets No Shoulder Pads..........but the Game is the same as of Today.

The comparison is people said wearing helmets sissified hockey.

If the guardian helps prevent concussions then players who use it ate not sissies nor does it sissify the sport. If it had arrived sooner perhaps we could get 5 more years of Luke Kuechly. Which is a positive thing.

Now if you want to argue how the data is inconclusive because it hasn't been used in regular season games then yes there is a point to be made. However the only way to get data is to use them in regular season games which they will now do.
