I actually just did an article on this (Comps are as prospects) QB Comps (2024 NFL Draft) - NFL Draft Countdown
I have that up now in another window. At first glance its nicely done and more comprehensive than anything else Ive seen.
Just read it- great article! Also makes it a little more interesting that Washington signed Mariota. I wonder if they see the similarities with him and Maye, too?
Thanks! They certainly could, but the back-up QB doesn't always dictate who you want as the starter (see Gardner Minshew signing with the Colts before drafting...Anthony Richardson). I think they go Daniels ultimately.
Agree think all of Washington off season move lead them to draft the guy most ready now which I think is Daniels.
Dunlevy is at his best doing story pieces about players. He’s not particularly good with analysis work and he’s certainly not a “tape guy.” As for a JJ comp I don’t have one really. Maybe that’s part of why I was leery to take the guy in the first draft. He’s got a limited sample size and stylistically nothing stood out enough about his game for me to be like “he reminds me of X.” I suppose that’s why I was asking. I don’t always think comps are worth while but they do help me figure out where a guy belongs or how history tells me he might be best deployed.
Derrick Carr is an interesting one. I don’t remember much about him as a prospect though. Seems like most of these comps are “guys that run an offense well but not true franchise QB caliber players.” Though I seem to have a more strict interpretation then most about what franchise QB means.
I think that sums up most of this class outside Caleb. Now, these are as prospects and Mariota/RGIII certainly had top potential.
I actually hated Mariota as a prospect and love Maye which I guess is weird. (My style comp for Maye is “poor man’s Farve”) I do get the RGIII comp with Daniel’s (I loved RGIII coming out) and it would be a bit funny to see him go to the WFT after how RGIII played out there. I have Williams on his own level then Maye, then the other two. But that is very much with a Giants/Brian Daboll mindset.
Just pinged him on Twitter. I’ll go prep Indy’s picture for the garbage when I get sniped. Indy will listen to offers if any exist. Will have to gain a pick to accept, this year or next. Preferably this year.
Just FYI to anyone interested... Seattle at #16 would take an offensive lineman as part of the trade to move down from #16. Doesn't matter which OL position.
why trade for OL when you can sign Mekhi Becton for a box of doughnuts? Oops... NVM... he just ate them. yours truly, spiteful Jets fan
I spit out my Baja Blast reading this. On one hand I’m bummed because I wasted the nectar of the gods. On the other, I’m still laughing.
