Jets will sign left tackle Tyron Smith

Veteran left tackle Tyron Smith has found his new NFL home.

Smith, who has played his entire 13-year career with the Cowboys, is now signing with the Jets, according to multiple reports.

That means he’ll be responsible for protecting the blind side of Aaron Rodgers — unless Rodgers retires to run for Vice President. The Jets do expect Rodgers to be their quarterback this season, and they want to keep him upright after he lasted just four plays last year. Smith should help.

The 33-year-old Smith is a two-time first-team All-Pro and an eight-time Pro Bowler, and a member of the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade team. He’s one of the best offensive linemen to play in the NFL in recent memory. He was a great selection for the Cowboys with the ninth overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, and the Cowboys’ decision to sign him to an eight-year contract in 2014 proved to be a great move. But he and the Cowboys went their separate ways this offseason, and now he’s continuing his career with the Jets.

Patrick Queen stands ground saying he’ll play ‘villain’ role with Steelers after leaving Ravens

    upload_2024-3-17_14-28-58.png

Baltimore Ravens fans have been going at former linebacker Patrick Queen after his introductory comments as a new member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, their AFC North rival.

Queen stood in front of Pittsburgh media on Friday where he said he can’t wait to embrace a "villain" role when it comes time to face the Ravens again, which the Steelers will do twice every season.

"It’s going to be weird, but I want to be that villain. I want to be that guy. I’m looking to do some stuff to them," Queen said.

Ravens fans have not liked those words from Queen and have been coming at him even more since he left the Ravens via free agency to join their rival. It has been a theme this NFL offseason, where star players are joining teams they have been so used to despising each season.

But Queen is clearly sick of the comments being thrown his way after posting to X on Saturday night.

Queen explained why he chose the Steelers, which included head coach Mike Tomlin’s presence.

"That man standing right there," Queen said of Tomlin. "I think just the organization itself is known for winning, known for great defense. And they got a bunch of stars over here. So I just wanted to come be a part of that and come be that extra piece to try to win again."

Any of you been following this? Its fascinating to me. Cant wait.

Tyson and Paul will square off on July 20 on Netflix at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas – the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

"It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard. Now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons," Paul said in a statement released by Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions (MVP).

"My sights are set on becoming a world champion, and now I have a chance to prove myself against the greatest heavyweight champion ever, the baddest man on the planet and the most dangerous boxer of all time. This will be the fight of a lifetime."

The fight will mark Paul’s second bout of the year and Tyson’s first since his exhibition match with Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.

"He's grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT," Tyson’s statement reads.

"It's a full circle moment that will be beyond thrilling to watch; as I started him on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones and now I plan to finish him."

Mike Williams to visit Jets, Steelers, Panthers this week

Free agent wide receiver Mike Williams will have plenty of visits with suitors this week.

Williams has scheduled meetings with the Jets, Steelers and Panthers, according to multiple reports.

The Jets are up first on Monday night, and it’s possible they could blow him away with an offer to try to get him to sign without making any more visits.

But more likely, Williams will hear what other teams have to say. That will include the Steelers and Panthers, and it may also include the Chargers, who cut Williams last week. The Chargers did that to clear $20 million in salary cap space, but that doesn’t preclude them bringing Williams back at a lower price.

An important question for every team hosting Williams will be how far along he is in rehabbing the torn ACL he suffered in Week Three last season. Teams will want to be sure he’s on pace to be ready to go for this season before signing him.

If he is healthy, the 29-year-old Williams can be a solid addition to any offense. He’s a two-time 1,000-yard receiver who averages 15.6 yards per catch over his career.

The Browns are adding a veteran running back.

D’Onta Foreman has agreed to terms with Cleveland, per Jordan Schultz of BleacherReport.com.

Foreman, who turns 28 next month, spent last season with the Bears. He rushed for 425 yards with four touchdowns in nine games, also recording 11 receptions for 77 yards with a TD.

A third-round pick in the 2017 draft, Foreman’s best season came in 2022 when he rushed for 914 yards and five touchdowns with the Panthers. He became the team’s lead back after Christian McCaffrey was traded to the 49ers.

Foreman notably also rushed for 566 yards with three TDs for the Titans in 2021 and had 327 yards as a rookie for Houston.

Cleveland’s top running back, Nick Chubb, is still recovering from a season-ending knee injury suffered in Week 2 of last year and may not be available to start 2024.

Hip-drop tackles will be a 15-yard penalty if at least 24 NFL owners agree with the Competition Committee that it’s time to take the technique out of the game.

The Competition Committee has formally proposed banning hip-drop tackles with the following new rule:

“ARTICLE 18. HIP-DROP TACKLE. It is a foul if a player uses the following technique to bring a runner to the ground: (a) grabs the runner with both hands or wraps the runner with both arms; and (b) unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner’s leg(s) at or below the knee. Penalty: For a Hip-Drop Tackle: Loss of 15 yards and an automatic first down.”

Several NFL players have been injured on hip-drop tackles, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said the play should be eliminated from the game. The NFL Players Association, however, has expressed skepticism that the NFL will be able to define hip-drop tackles in a way that the officials will enforce consistently.

Now we see the definition. We’ll find out soon whether NFL owners are satisfied that it’s a rule to adopt this year.

At first glance, its still another added unnecessary play for the refs to handle, too much discretion and opinion involved. Refs are in over their heads now and they just wanna add something else.

By the way - There is an injury risk on every single play in the NFL... maybe they should penalize every single play? :p

Speaking of hip-drop tackles, the union chimed in.

On Wednesday, the NFLPA again stated its opposition to any rule prohibiting the tackle.

“The players oppose any attempt by the NFL to implement a rule prohibiting a ‘swivel hip-drop’ tackle,” the NFLPA wrote on social media. “While the NFLPA remains committed to improvements to our game with health and safety in mind, we cannot support a rule change that causes confusion for us as players, for coaches, for officials, and especially, for fans. We call on the NFL, again, to reconsider the implementing this rule.”

Report: Odell Beckham Jr. to visit Dolphins Thursday

A recent report mentioned wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. as a possibility for the Jets, but the free agent wideout’s first visit of free agency will reportedly come with another AFC East team.

Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports that Beckham is scheduled to meet with the Dolphins on Thursday.

The Dolphins recently re-signed Braxton Berrios, but don’t have a clear No. 3 wideout to go with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Beckham would be an interesting choice for that role given some of his past feelings about the size of his role in the offenses he’s played in, but the options for both sides aren’t growing as free agents continue to find homes around the league.

Beckham had 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns with the Ravens last season.

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald says he’s accomplished everything he set out to do as an NFL player, and now it’s time to do something else.

Donald posted a video on social media saying that after a great career, he’s ready to move on.

“Ten years, 10 Pro Bowls, eight All-Pros, three defensive players of the year, rookie of the year, two NFC Championships, three NFC West championships, went to two Super Bowls, won one, lost one,” Donald said. “I’m complete. I’m full. I think the passion to play the game is no longer there for me. I will always love football, but to think about going through another camp and another 17 season, I just don’t got the urge to want to push myself to do that no more. I’m just, I’m burned out. The best way to say that is I’m full, I’m complete, I’m satisfied with what I was able to do in 10 years, and I think it’s time for me, at 32 years old, to retire from football and jump into the next step of my career and life and it’s time to move on.”

Donald will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2029, and he’s a lock to get in on the first ballot.

A very talented player who seems like he thinks football is just a career and not a game. At 32 years old he’s too young to retire, which means he doesn’t really love the game.
