Beats me. Familiarity? Cost? Just genuinely likes working with the guy? Determined to sabotage Mac because he was still salty about Mac going outside the building for help in 22? Patricia had more incriminating photos of that drunken walk of shame Bill made on Nantucket a while back? No idea.
If he forced arguably the greatest coach of all time to take one guy I’d think as a first year guy you’re probably not going to be in a position to refuse input from the guy signing your seven figure paycheck. But if that’s a deal-breaker for you that’s your prerogative. There’d be no shortage of other candidates champing at the bit to take your place.
The Mayo hire is interesting in regard to what Irish stated and your reply. First, it eliminates the part of the conversation of how the staff will be assembled. Kraft is going to likely have a strong hands on approach with a head coach that he was preparing for the position. Second, I like the hire as the bridge out of the Belichick era. You're going to be making changes but they can be done involving a lot of the foundational pieces with the frontman being a part of the very system you will be modifying. It's going to provide a ton of stability throughout the process. Finally, all the Patriots need to do in order to move on from Bill without several seasons of constant changeover and lowered mediocrity is to simply keep the base structure and update it in pieces over the course of a couple seasons. There's only one major change I would look to make immediately - I would move on from both Mac and Zappe in this draft to start clean on offense for 2024. Sign a veteran and draft a rookie, rebuild the room and put that part of the past immediately in the rearview mirror.
My thought exactly. I wonder how much success BB would have had without Brady? We will never know, but its interesting to me to consider. Not taking anything away from BB and he did well with the talent he had. I guess I could even shove this thought in reverse and ask myself, how good would Brady have been on another team without BB? The combo as a team and BB was brilliant for a long time, thats a fact.
Well they need reinforcements on the OL and some pass catchers that can get open and catch consistently, too, but yes I agree 100% resetting the QB room needs to be top priority.
Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby endorsed hiring interim head coach Antonio Pierce on a full-time basis near the end of the regular season and he did the same in a social media post on Friday, but that might not be the end of his push. NFL Media reports that Crosby is expected to explore a trade request if the Raiders opt to hire someone other than Pierce. That report is part of a larger report about Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh’s potential return to the NFL because the Raiders “continue to weigh” a pursuit of their former quarterbacks coach. Exploring a trade request isn’t the same as demanding a trade or vowing to hold out if Pierce is not retained, but it does send another clear message about what one of the team’s best players wants to see happen in the coming weeks. The Raiders have not held any head coaching interviews this week, but they have been interviewing potential General Managers. A hire on that front would likely lead to the team turning its full attention to the head coaching question. Pierce has a fan.
I don't and have never liked BB the GM. He seems to have been lucky to have a guy like Brady who knew how to play a "system" with a lot of the cheaper guys he brought along. When Brady was gone it fell apart because he doesn't know better. t caused him to severly handicap what he could do as a coach. Not the whole picture but it's a decent snapshot.
Mike Tomlin will make a decision about his future after the season There has been plenty of speculation about Mike Tomlin’s future in Pittsburgh. Although the Steelers will not fire him — and hope to extend his contract — Tomlin has not yet decided to return. As explained at halftime of Browns-Texans on NBC, Tomlin will be all in until the season ends. Then, he’ll do what he does every year. He’ll reassess his situation and decide what to do. This year, things are unique for him. He has never before entered the final year of a contract. Past extensions were done with two years left. It’s a factor in the analysis. He loves the team. The Steelers have great young players. He loves coaching. Still, he’ll huddle with his wife and the rest of his family and make a decision. The options (as we see them) are this: (1) sign a new contract with the Steelers; (2) resign and wait to see whether another team contacts the Steelers about acquiring his contractual rights in 2024; (3) resign, sit out a year, and see whether another team contacts the Steelers about acquiring his rights in 2025; or (4) decline to sign an extension, finish his contract in 2024, and become a free agent. Absent an extension, Tomlin would become the hottest commodity entering the 2025. Plenty of teams have been waiting for a chance to hire him. Some teams would fire coaches they currently have if they knew they could get him. PFT/Florio
Not for nothing, but they also developed Cassel, Hoyer, Garoppolo and to a lesser extent Brissett during Bill’s time, too. And went 14-6 with those guys when Brady was out. Bill wasn’t winning 6 chips with those guys obviously, but up through 2018, he usually had a strong enough roster in place to support non-elite QB play to convince me it wasn’t all the luck of having Brady. That said I fully acknowledge the roster management the last 5 years and the coaching the last 2 was fucking terrible.
Ya. That's why I added it's not the whole picture but it needs a deeper dive. Basically a lot of hubris though. Nah, not hubris but getting complacent at least.
Pete Carroll: Those who decided to move on from me are “not football people” The Seahawks tried to create the impression that the departure of coach Pete Carroll and mutual and amicable. It was neither. Carroll made that clear the day it happened, explaining that he fought to stay in the job from the podium at the team’s press room. On Friday, he appeared on Seattle Sports radio to elaborate on the events that led to the ouster. Along the way, he made it clear that his fate was determined by those who don’t know football. As explained by Brady Henderson of ESPN.com, it came up when Carroll was addressing efforts to turn around a team that missed the playoffs in two of the last three seasons. "[W]hat is the essence of the adjustments that are necessary?” Carroll said. “That’s where maybe we don’t see eye to eye on, because I see it one way and I think I’ve got a way to fix it and I’m not going to kind of halfway fix it. I’m trying to fix it so it’s perfect. I’ve got real precise and specific thoughts, and they may not see it that way, they may not agree with it, they may not see that that’s the right answer or that’s not the answer that makes them feel good. “The difficult part is, if you guys could know, it’s really hard because they’re not football people. They’re not coaches, and so to get to the real details of it is really difficult for other people.” That’s one of the fundamental disconnects that arise for most teams. Someone who doesn’t know football is making football decisions. Apply that to any other business. People who don’t know the core subject matter of the industry making key decisions about it. It’s lunacy. In the NFL, it’s commonplace. PFT _________ ________________ Strunk comes to mind. Owner by inheritance.
Complacency is a good word. Coach with your kids and your buddies. Draft the guys your cronies give you intel on instead of who your scouts tell you to. Sloppy undisciplined play on the field. Sniping in the locker room. That’s why for all he accomplished I felt like it was time for a hard reset. We’ll see if this half measure works but I am skeptical, even as much as I like Mayo.
I’d take him for sure, good player, better than anyone they have on the roster currently. Rather have Tee if I can get my hands on a pending Cincy FA receiver tho. Boyd could also conceivably be redundant to Pop Douglas, depending how much of a year 2 leap he can make.
Jim Harbaugh set to meet with Chargers Monday Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines celebrated their national title with a parade and ceremony in Ann Arbor on Saturday and Harbaugh will be moving on to other business on Monday. According to multiple reports, Harbaugh will meet with the Chargers about their head coaching vacancy on Monday. Reports last week indicated that such a meeting was coming as Harbaugh looks to potentially move back to the NFL after leading his alma mater to a championship. The Chargers have interviewed a number of other candidates for the job, including Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald. Macdonald spent one season working as the Michigan defensive coordinator under Harbaugh. Harbaugh went 44-19-1 in the regular season and 5-3 in the playoffs over four seasons as the 49ers head coach. The 49ers advanced to three straight NFC title games to kick off that run and lost to Harbaugh’s brother John’s Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII. There has also been word of interest in Harbaugh from the Raiders, although no meeting has been scheduled between the two sides at this time. PFT
