Its almost sounding like Poles and Eberflus are trying to save their butts instead of building a better football team... thats an odd thought I had, I get them often. Its also odd to me that the majority of the mockers have C Williams going to the Bears at #1 and with the Commanders and Patriots at 2 and 3, both in need of a QB, why havnt the Bears come out and said one way or the other, Fields is staying here or hey, he's on the block? Its odd especially if your Fields that no one in the Bears organization has his back... seems like a complete lack of support and faith. Maybe the Bears are just keeping their cards close to the vest, but if Fields is the man, why not say so or do they just keep him to be a possible pawn in the front offices chess game?
The Bears want to drive the cost up. Assuming Fields is their guy, saying they don't want a QB would mean the cant get as much of a premium for moving off a QB at #1.
Ian Rapoport was saying the Pats could just hire Jared Mayo without a lengthy hiring process because he's established. If he were white it wouldn't be legal lol.
It’s legal because the succession plan was written into his contract and submitted to the league, not because he’s “established” nor because he’s a minority. Same way Ravens moved from Ozzie to DeCosta (very white last time I checked) without any outside interviews.
Mayo is the new HC in New England On Thursday night, a report emerged that the Patriots had already crafted a succession plan that promised the coaching job to Jerod Mayo. The Patriots nevertheless had the option to not elevate Mayo, and to conduct a full-blown search for a replacement for Bill Belichick. The Patriots wisely moved quickly to make Mayo the coach. The longer they had waited, the more speculation would have intensified that Mike Vrabel would get the job. With three days of playoff games — and plenty of hours of pregame shows to fill — the narrative could have become Mayo or Vrabel. With each passing news cycle, more and more Patriots fans might have coalesced behind Vrabel. After all, he’s a proven commodity as a coach. He’s a member of the team’s Hall of Fame. If the powers-that-be had waited too long to activate the clause in Mayo’s contract, it could have become too late to do so, as soon as Monday. If the Patriots had not elevated Mayo, he would have received a predetermined buyout. Per a source with general knowledge of the procedure, the buyout would have been not subject to offset language. It would have been a cash payment to Mayo as the alternative to giving him the job. Instead, he got the job. Quickly. He has the difficult task of replacing a legend. He surely welcomes the challenge. PFT
I'm happy for Mayo and he's learned from the best. My one thought that he's a defensive minded coach and the biggest issues with NE are on the offensive side of the ball. We'll see how he handles it.
The Patriots have their new head coach in Jerod Mayo but that is just one part of the organization’s plan to replace Bill Belichick. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, now that the club has turned to Mayo, New England will hire a new General Manager. Belichick previously served as the team’s top football authority on all matters. In his Thursday press conference, team owner Robert Kraft noted that Belichick gained that power over time. But Kraft also discussed the benefits of having proper “checks and balances” in any organization. “We need what I say — I call it, we need ‘Dr. No’s’ around us, people to protect us from ourselves,” Kraft said. “And as things evolve and you get more power, sometimes people are afraid to speak up. I’m speaking about all companies.” So as the Patriots move from Belichick to Mayo at head coach, the team will have a different approach to player acquisition with a new G.M. As noted recently by TheAthletic.com, none of the players New England drafted in the first three rounds between 2014 and 2020 were signed to a second contract with the team. That is something the Patriots would surely like to change with this next regime. PFT
Thats kind of the same thing Im thinking, but clearly he has seen enough from the offense also and with good peeps around him he might bring in the right coaches and try to nail the darft. Patriots sit at #3 in the draft, maybe they draft one of those top 3 QB's. Im not real privy, but maybe a a top-notch RB would help whoever is the QB by balancing things.
Commanders hire Adam Peters The Commanders have made their first major hire of the Josh Harris era. There’s currently a dispute among insiders as to the title. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media says 49ers assistant G.M. Adam Peters has taken a job with the team that likely will be dubbed “President of Football Operations.” Adam Schefter of ESPN.com characterizes the new job for Peters as “General Manager.” Given that the Commanders still have a G.M. in Martin Mayhew, either Schefter is off or Mayhew is out. Regardless, Peters is in. He’ll run the show. We’ll see what happens with Mayhew and team president Jason Wright. As one source explained it to PFT, the 49ers tried hard to keep Peters. He decided, in the end, to go. His first big decision in D.C. will be head coach. It’s unclear who will make the final call. Peters surely will have some say in which way things go. PFT
Well, Mr. Bill would NEVER have done it, but with the Patriots sitting at #3, I wouldn't be surprised if a new GM comes in and explains the importance of getting it right at QB. Kraft already knows this, as his entire dynasty was based on the goat. However, Bill has been telling Kraft for years, "you don't need a high first round pick, just look at Tommy". Brady was an anomaly, the new GM will most likely have their preference on a QB and will most likely prefer to jump two spots to get them if the Bears are listening to reasonable offers. I wouldn't be shocked to see them swap 1st and 3rd so the Patriots can get their guy. As for Mayo, this is perfect for the Patriots/Kraft, the defense isn't the problem, thanks in part to Mayo. He will find an offensive coordinator (look towards Josh McDaniels) that will take over the offense and he will be mostly hands off. I would think McDaniels would like to get the Belichick past behind him and not follow him to another franchise, but I could be wrong. Not a fan of McDaniels, but my money is on Mayo wanting him.
No disagreement here, but Kraft is a loyal guy and gave him a bag to move his family back here and not be one-and-done if things went well, and I believe will give him another chance to get it right with more say in how the rest of the offensive staff is constructed. And hopefully some better personnel as that was obviously also a big part of the problem. No tears will be shed by me if they part ways, I don’t think he’s particularly good. I just don’t expect it to happen based on the reasons above.
O'Brien was Belichick's guy, not Mayo. I would hope Kraft is going to give Mayo leeway in hiring his own staff. If I were Mayo, I wouldn't risk my job on him as OC
