Ya can you cut guys during the offseason for free? Or at least without counting their main cap for the season and only their penalty?

  2. Campbell Administrator Manager Commissioner

No, there is no cap relief in the offseason for cutting a player that is still under contract.

As for the second part of your question - You will have to elaborate.

Any transactions being made at this point will have their penalties reflected for 2025. The 2024 penalties have already been put to the numbers for this season.

I mean If we cut a guy before the season does their number count to the season total or just the penalty? So a player has $6M Cap hit. Does that $6M get reflected to our 2024 cap total if he is cut before the season? Or just the penalty?

Are you asking if a player that is no longer on your roster is still counting against your cap?

Just trying to make sure I understand your question.

Corrected, and thanks for pointing it out.

No. A guy that still has years remaining. If he was cut at the end of the last season he would have been a cap penalty but not owed base salary for this year, but if hes cut now is he owed base salary? I was under the impression we could make offseason cuts and not owe base salary.

There is no relief for players on the practice squad now that the season is over. The practice squad is only an available option for rostered players during the regular season (when we designate) until season close (follows the general idea of NFL PS).

Correct. You only got the trade relief that was generated by the other owner taking the hit for this season. The contract would go back to the original numbers for all remaining contractual seasons.

Your rollover cash is the remaining money from the previous season that was not being utilized in the $50mil allowable for in season signings.

It gets subtracted from your current cap hit to reflect the current amount of money you have on the books for 2024.

We reset the base cap limit to $250mil to start last season so the 8% increase will land us at $270mil.

You do not retain any of their base salary, which is the impetus for the penalty when they are cut.

We don't hook owners for any of their cut contracts beyond the penalty.

Does this clarify it for you?

Okay. But if they were cut midseason wouldn't their cap hit already be reflected? So If I cut a guy now I don't owe their base salary but on season start their contract gets added to my total and isn't subtracted when cut?

  12. LAOJoe Assistant Coach Manager Patreon Silver Maple Leafs Eagles

    Sorry I am still confused.

  13. Campbell Administrator Manager Commissioner

When you cut a guy midseason his cap hit immediately comes off of your total and the accrued money gets added up in anticipation of next season.

I'm not sure where the confusion is coming from, so could you provide me with an example so I can break it down?

Or were you under the assumption that you were carrying dead cash last season in the form of players that you had cut (specifically, the blue column)?

Okay. So I had $8,500 per the contracts spreadsheet. Did I really use $41,000 last year?? I thought I looked late in the year and was still seeing something like $23,000-$28,000. This year I might try to have a notes page just for this league where I keep clearer track myself. I wasn't that on the ball last season.
EDIT: The confusion for me might stem from when I put a bid on a player, it was still showing me an available like $20,000+ so I was assuming I still had that available.

So if I'm willing to eat a little penalty already in 2024, I'm allowed technically to cut players now??

I need an example. Let's use Eddie Jackson on my roster for example.
    a) He's cut off the taxi after week 8 last season.
    b) He's cut from active roster after week 8 last season.
    c) He's cut before the final day of the season last season.
    d) He's cut today (if possible)
    e) he's cut 1st day of free agency
    f) he's cut 1st day of this season

What is the penalty, is salary added back to your cap and how much? It seems annoying but it would help me understand what the heck is going on. Is it a percentage of the remaining season? Sorry but it would help me understand as it seems like you are saying the cap hit gets refunded but that makes no sense to me unless it and new signings are also a percentage of the remaining season.

When you cut a player his salary comes off of your books immediately and the cap penalty gets put into an accrued total that gets put on your books in the following season.

If his base salary was $1mil and your cap with him on your roster was $101mil, then the moment you cut him your total would drop to $100mil.

The penalty does not affect you in the same season that you make the cut.

No, not until the 2024 open on the 14th. The window right now is meant to clear up extensions, tags and forced renegotiations prior to the open on FF.

I think you might be crashing numbers together that are actually seperate.

Your rollover from last season was locked in prior to free agency opening up on FF. That's the number that you carried into this season from last.

The rest of the numbers you are seeing are your current actuals, with the dead money from last season already factored in.

I kinda get what you are saying but this doesn't answer it and it's still confusing. I'll have to reword it later.

You're putting thought into it that you don't need to.

The process is simple. You cut a player, his salary is removed and the penalty is forwarded.

There's really nothing else to it.

  20. LAOJoe Assistant Coach Manager Patreon Silver Maple Leafs Eagles

But doesn't that mean you can rent a $8M player all season and cut him on the last day and lower your cap?
