I get it, but what you're describing here applies to Fields as well. Actually moreso with Fields cos he's already put it on tape. I don't like to say it but we know he can't elevate the talent around him(DJ is a stud in his own right), we know he won't win you 4th Q games, we know he'll turn the ball over too much and we know he'll miss too many games with injuries cos he takes too many hits. With the top rookie passer in the draft you're projecting pat. You have no idea if he'll play at Fields level or Stroud level. We do know his ceiling as a passer will be much higher but pretty much everything else is at worst a wash. And he'll be under contract for 5years and there will still be a ton of draft and FA resources to put around him.

I wish Fields had played well enough that this wasnt a discussion, but he hasnt.

Yes im sure he will be thrilled at his replacement being in the room for every meeting with him until they finally ship him out. Im sure his team mates many of whom have been very vocal in their support will be just as thrilled. Why would you want multiple premium picks to make the team better when instead you can have someone warming the bench.

But its not just about that, you def dont need me to tell you wot your town is like. Every bad game will bring a ton of questions from local(and national) media about who is starting. Why is this guy starting why isn't that guy starting. Holy shit the media and fanbase were doing that over Tyson fucking Bagent WTF do you think it would be like if it was Caleb Williams???!! We're talking distraction on an astronomical level. No one in their right mind should want Fields and Williams/Maye here together.

Like Trubisky, everything we've ever heard about Fields is that he's a hard worker and a great team mate. With Fields i'd add superior leadership qualities to Mitch as well. 0% of the problem with Fields is effort related. He doesnt need a fire lit under him, he's already trying his best and has been since day 1.

If they wind up paying Fields then it'll probably start at Daniel Jones money, if nothing else because it'll be 2-3years after Jones got paid and the numbers will have gone up. QB salaries are pretty out of control but i dont see them getting any more sensible.

If you pick up his option then trade him a year from now your trade comp will almost certainly be lower. A team probably isn't giving up a 1st rounder for a guy under contract for one year. Maybe they would if Fields totally balled out but if that happens are you really trading him? And if the answer is no then its another year of the #1 pick sitting on the bench? So what was the point of picking him? The time to make the decision is now imo.

This is all correct and I don’t contest any of it, but then there’s the other side of the coin where you don’t strike gold with whatever QB you draft and you don’t have a guy who’s an immediate threat and everything we want week one.

The defense is gonna be a lot better next year, the 53 is more talented and we all expect Poles to further that progress. This is the time to strike, and starting over with a rookie learning on the job is how you torpedo the contention window you just built yourself up for.

Justin, for all of his flaws, you know what he is. I’m presently not convinced any of the guys are better day 1 alternative, but that doesn’t mean don’t draft a guy. I’ve advocated for drafting a guy and still do.

I’ve been consistent in saying pry Justin fields from the roster, don’t just give him away nor rush to trade him. If someone puts a 1st rounder in 24 and a conditional pick that can turn out to be a 2nd/3rd/4th based on stats/wins/health on the table, I’m fine dealing Justin away.

But mentioning Sam Darnold as a baseline point is absurd. Darnold sucked and was hurt. I’m not saying Justin is proven, because we wouldn’t be having this conversation—but he’s had far more success than Darnold.

I never said yes keep and use #1 on a qb only to have him sit. Of course that logic is faulty, and it’s all moot if Poles decides Williams is his guy. If Poles takes a qb #1 overall Justin is gone.

I don’t believe Williams or Maye is better than Justin in terms of day 1 starters, but I believe in the plan of Justin being short term as a starter on his rookie deal at the beginning of this contention window, whether that’sa kid taken rounds 1-3 riding the pine, and you make Justin keep the rookie on the bench until he can’t as you try to contend.

Yes, that means you may not get a nice return a year from now, but in my preferred method, you get another haul for number 1, possibly identifying the next Carolina/future team declining where a future 1st is a top draft pick, whether that’s New Orleans, Tennessee, Vegas, or the NY Giants and getting more assets.

Dont think the locker room will turn over knowing Bagent has been upgraded, in fact, I’d argue they love Justin being back as QB1, even if there’s still no guarantee beyond next year.
