Josh Dobbs will start for Vikings in Week 14 vs. Raiders

Despite an ugly performance against the Bears in Week 12, the Vikings are sticking with Josh Dobbs.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters in his Wednesday press conference that Dobbs will start for Minnesota against Las Vegas on Sunday.

Via Kevin Seifert of ESPN, O’Connell noted that the coaching staff’s goal this week is to use a scheme that will “help Josh thrive.”

Dobbs has now appeared in four games with three starts for the Vikings since arriving via trade in early November. But Dobbs finished his last outing — a 12-10 loss to the Bears — 22-of-32 for 185 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions.

The previous week, Dobbs was 20-of-32 for 221 yards with a touchdown, an interception, and three fumbles with one lost.

But Dobbs will have the benefit of receiver Justin Jefferson this week, as he’s been activated off of injured reserve.

Nick Mullens and Jaran Hall will also be available for the Vikings at QB this week.

In 12 games with 11 starts between the Cardinals and Vikings this year, Dobbs has completed 64 percent of his throws for 2,401 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Justin Jefferson a full participant in Wednesday’s practice

Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson was a full participant in practice Wednesday.

It marks the first time since Week 5 when he injured his hamstring that he has fully participated in practice. He is set to return Sunday against the Raiders.

The Vikings also saw cornerback Akayleb Evans (calf) have a full practice Wednesday.

Safety Theo Jackson (illness) is the only Vikings player who didn’t practice.

Running back Kene Nwangwu (concussion) and cornerback NaJee Thompson (knee) were limited.

Vikings WR Justin Jefferson looking forward to teaming up with QB Josh Dobbs in return from IR

Justin Jefferson is back from his stay on injured reserve. He's arrived to some new surroundings.

Jefferson will run routes for a new quarterback this weekend, veteran journeyman Josh Dobbs, who has captured the attention of the NFL world with his heroics displayed as starting quarterback of two different clubs in 2023. He nearly lost his job this week, but Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell decided to give Dobbs one more shot with a full deck at his disposal.

The ace up the sleeve? Jefferson, a dynamite receiver that Minnesota certainly missed in the last month. Dobbs might never have a better opportunity to prove himself than this weekend, when Jefferson steps foot on the field once again.

"Really both ways, just on the field and in the film room, just going over different plays with him, going over the timing of everything just like we did with Kirk (Cousins), and trying to find that connection that we can use for Sunday," Jefferson said when asked how he's gotten up to speed with Dobbs. "It's been a pleasure working with him, kinda learning things that I can learn from him, that he can learn from me, and it'll be better for us when we go out on that field."

The Vikings have tested both the hearts and the patience of their fans this season, starting the season 1-4 before ripping off five straight wins to move to 6-4. Dobbs was the catalyst of the last two triumphs, writing the best chapter of his surprising 2023 story. But in the last two weeks, the Passtronaut has fallen back to earth, throwing five combined interceptions across two straight Vikings losses.

Both of those losses came without Jefferson, who told reporters he feels just as explosive as before he suffered the hamstring injury that sent him to IR.

"If I didn't I wouldn't be playing," Jefferson said. "That was the main focus to getting back on the field, is having that same explosion, having that same power, having that same speed as I did before the injury."

He'll have to establish a rapport with Dobbs rather quickly to keep Minnesota's playoff hopes alive and off life support, a challenging task for any receiver. Fortunately for the Vikings, Jefferson isn't just any receiver.

"I mean, I've been talking with Josh, and of course before this week I wasn't really in practice as much, so wasn't really working with him as much," Jefferson said. "But I feel like we're going to be good, we're going to be fine, as long as he has confidence in me and I have confidence in him.

"I feel like Josh is a smart enough quarterback to read the defenses and choose when to throw me the ball, and see the double-teams and the single-highs, all of that. So, we go over that every single day, kind of prepare for that to happen throughout the game, so I feel like we're well-prepared in that aspect of things."

Jefferson once owned lofty goals of breaking 2,000 receiving yards, an achievement Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill is in line to accomplish. After missing extended time, Jefferson isn't worried about the numbers anymore -- only wins.

"Shoot, we're trying to get to the playoffs, and get to the Super Bowl," Jefferson said. "I mean, the individual stats are not there for me this year, but it's more about winning for the team, more about doing things for the team to help. Of course, I had to do the sideline adjustment, but now it is more about getting on the field and helping this team out any way I can."

He and Dobbs will begin their journey toward such a goal this weekend in Las Vegas.

Justin Jefferson believes Josh Dobbs can get the job done and the Raiders game will be the first step to see if he can

I wonder why the Vikings won't play him Jaren Hall is this guy getting the Kellen Mond treatment and I do not believe Jaren Hall was a KOC pick,it will be interesting if he can mold Dobbs into a pocket passer? he is who he is

The QB position is interesting and confusing at the moment. I thought Hall would be a better choice or even Mullens. but KOC knows better than I, I guess. Jefferson thinks he and Dobbs are going to 'click', so maybe JJ had some input, Im just guessing.

Will be interesting to see how it unfolds. If Dobbs is the mental genius people say he is, he better have learned from last games performance against the Bears and do a better job... with JJ out there, I dont see how he can be as a bad.

During the week, Dobbs and KOC spent tons of time watching film and reviewing the Bears game... they may have worked a few things out. Dobbs is aware that over the past 2 games he turned the ball over 6 times and they addressed that also. KOC also has stated that Mullens is ready to go if Dobbs has turnover issues again, so we might see (hopefully not) Mullens if Dobbs goes flat. I still dont know why Hall isnt mentioned except for the fact he's a rookie and 3rd on the depth chart... guess he's the emergency guy for now in case of injury.

KOC said; “We’ve been in a process of trying to provide him with clarity on what we’re doing offensively and then we’re learning a lot about each other as we go,” O’Connell said of Dobbs. “That’s why I love having him here — his work ethic, spending a lot of time with him, getting to know him, and continuing to dive deeper into what helps him be the best version of himself. That’s what I know that we pride ourselves on around here, is helping our players do that.

“So whether it’s schematically, fundamentally, what are we asking him to do in what situation or phase of the game? That’s where we can continue to all elevate our ability to help each other but, more importantly, elevate Josh’s ability to sustain success.”

Funny thing about QB's... remember when we talked about Mannion and how he bounced around, especially with Seattle and Minnesota? Well, earlier in the week, the Seahawks claimed him again from the practice squad, lol.
