So this I completely agree with, I feel like you were arguing against picking a QB. I don't really care if it's Maye/Williams or someone much farther down the draft order after we trade down, but we need someone. I don't see any problem with keeping Justin on the cheap while they build up the line, *assuming* they actually build up the line. Let him take the hits while they get settled and let the rookie sit. I also agree he is what he is at this point, but the final games of this season are just going to show more of the same probably. And either way we get to watch it. There's also the possibility though that the new QB is thrown to the wolves and Poles offloads Justin for a pick of some kind. Similar to what you said about a team falling in love, there's got to be a few teams out there that believe they could fix Justin. I know some (bigrob I guess, and SO many people on reddit) are saying this, but I want to be clear that I do not want MHJ. Moore has shown enough flashes that with the right OC/QB he could shoulder the load easily. #1 WR is not a need for this team when there are so many other holes. I was lukewarm on the idea back in the beginning of the season, but it's so clear that the trenches are the weakness of this team. And what do we do if they can't come to an agreement with Johnson? Then we have #1 CB as a hole to fill as well. But if we get a top tier LT, and can find a center? That line is going to look a lot better, if Jenkins stays healthy and Wright continues to improve. We can upgrade at RG too, but it's not the gaping, glaring hole the other two are I think. At least, it would not be so bad to drop a new QB into. Agree to a point. I think Young is definitely put in a much worse position, but Stroud is definitely elevating the play of those around him. I haven't watched a ton of Texans games, but when I did I was impressed, he was passing the eye test. This is the same team that fought us for the #1 overall with Davis Mills in that same "good" situation last year. Who knows if it will continue, but there's just no denying right now he's looking good. It's kind of crazy to me how far Carolina went off the rails. I thought they'd be the same or maybe worse, but not colossally bad. Great for us and the draft pick though. And unlike Carolina, because we traded down last year, we have the ammo to take a QB AND build around him. If Poles would just pull his head out of his ass. We need to find that OC, we can upgrade the line and he's even got a good running game to fall back on with a good WR in Moore. The situation is not the same as Carolina. Decades of Bears fandom has shown me that we can and will get it wrong, but it's definitely more possible than many other teams. I do feel bad for Young, because right now he is getting "Chicago'd" as you say Dline, much like Justin where they aren't investing to help, and they're down what might be the #1 overall in this draft just to get him. If I take this team at face value, without question my number 1 problem are the coaches. Eberlose and Getsy I am 100% out on. I could not believe when there was 3 minutes left in the Vikings game after Fields second fumble, and the Vikings decide to run out the clock with a straight handoff, and I thought to myself, "my god, the Vikings are going to let us win this?" Sure as shit, another run, then an incomplete pass and we have the ball with the 2 minute warning under our belt, and then inexplicably Flores calls off the dogs and goes PREVENT when a FG wins the game? What in the actual fuck are you thinking? I mean, I love it, because fuck the vikings and go bears, but that was shocking. Eberlose got out-sucked to win that game. We don't fire these assholes, or don't hire the right guys to replace them, the QB and any other moves are kind of irrelevant.
I'm not. I want the bears to draft a QB. I'm not head over heels for either Maye or Williams. Its a deep draft at QB, and the combine, when Maye/Williams likely don't go/only do their pro-days, you'll see guys like Penix, Nix, McCarthy, Ewers, Daniels, and even Sanders. If the bears get #1, I hope like hell Williams after all the bad press/rough end to his USC career just balls out at his pro-day and re-establishes himself #1. Maye hopefully can too. I want the bears to then get a king's ransom for it, and come away with a QB in the wings with talent/potential behind Justin as you ride out his last 2 cheap years (or at least 1 if you don't pick up the 5th year option in the instance Justin gets hurt and said draftee comes in and looks any sort of decent) with a LT and a pass rusher with draft capital they get in return. I think DJ Moore is a fantastic #1. Mooney can stay or go. I'd like to keep him but if he gets a bag somewhere else let him, and I draft a WR early rounds because like QB, its top heavy this coming spring. You can also dip into FA, but I'd rather do that for Connor Williams to play C for big money if they have to. Don't think the Phins can keep him without working some cap magic or trading one of their big money playmakers. They have to shed 25 mil just to get to the black and more to fit in any kind of offseason.
Tankathon | 2024 NFL Draft Order - Bears are 1 and 5 as of right now. 2024 NFL Mock Draft: Patriots' Bill Belichick gets franchise QB; AFC contenders add firepower for star QBs - A CBS crack at a mock draft. Bears take Williams and Joe Alt, LT. Which is odd, because I thought the draft had the next two LTs taken in his mock ranked higher. Pat, who were your two guys we should be looking for? Also funny your boy is already going at #11 in that mock. You said it'd be combine time he'd fly up to top 10, heh.
I think I may just avoid the offseason altogether and just hunker down until the draft happens, after a hopefully eventful Black Monday and just take it from there. Too many idiots want a WR. I just don't have the ability to argue with idiots anymore, and I’m losing energy/patience in expecting anything other than this franchise doing something flashy, regardless of how stupid. The only flashiness I want, and I’m asking a lot—is Jim Harbaugh. The dude just understands/knows how to build an offense anywhere he goes, and he’s one of 2 guys I’d talk to when they hopefully fire Der Flus, the other being Slowik from Houston. I’m aware of the ‘backstory’ of him/Kevin Warren not getting along. I’m aware he could fully do what he did to Vikes two years ago, talk to them before Michigan chases him with a party boat full of cash and he becomes the highest paid college coach. Mock draft season began weeks ago, now its the time of year it picks up a head of steam on egregiously stupid levels and instead of watching a guy for what he is we debate what he isn't. It’s about a 6/10 now, by the end of the Super Bowl it’s 10/10. Right now pundits think he could play RT, instead of just grading him as what he is, a highly efficient run and pass blocker comp’d to Taylor Decker. He's not as good as Fashanu. I think Alt is much higher than 11th, and I hate Notre Dame--but there are also some pretty good OL at the top of the draft, so I'd try and find reasons to dislike but I can't say he's worse than Latham from Bama, Fuaga from Oregon State, or Fautanu from Washington, all mid-late 1sts projected. He's early round 1 potential with a ceiling of franchise left tackle, but talking heads today may not like the college jersey he wore, or his height, or what he ate for breakfast on the 2nd Tuesday of last month. I'm afraid to even ask how long his arms are. I’m aware that’s an immediate make/break decision for lots of people, the rest of his skill set/abilities/technique/the fact he could be a hall of famer at the end of his career be damned.
How Bears would that be? It's not about finding the best person for the job, it's about finding the best person to sing Kumbaya with.
Don't we all, but he butts heads and speaks his mind, and the Bears don't shell out big money for coaches. I listened to a whole Podcast from Hoge and Jahns on their thoughts, it was a good listen and pretty level headed, saying that Vegas would be the most likely destination. But that's not stopping the rumor mill running full tilt on him coming to the Bears. If the Bears make that move, it would impress the hell out of me, especially from Warren. That kind of move is getting away from their historical bullshit and really breaking new ground, and he even has ties as a former player! My early gut prediction is we hire Bienemy. That's the most Bears move I can think of.
The dude who called 46 passes and 14 runs less than 2 weeks ago in a humiliating loss? Haven’t we seen this song and dance before? Like within the last 2 years?
Of course, rumors already link him to the Bears, so why not. The redditors were all over crowning him too, so bonus points for early fan love. My favorite rumor right now is that not only is Harbaugh coming to the Bears, but he's bringing JJ with him. It could be just like Pete Carroll, escaping CFB right before the sanctions hit and making his team a perennial contender. I hate Pete, but you can't deny he's been a good coach. Why can't we get ours? (Answer: The Bears aren't going to roll out the red carpet and wallet).
The most Bears thing to do (and the likely outcome) is Flus is not fired but is a lameduck in 2024. Poles drafts a QB. The Bears suck in 2024 and miss the playoffs. Flus is then fired and a new regime comes in for 2025, forcing the young QB to learn/adapt to an entire new system again. This happened with Trubs and Fields already.
If that happens again I'll be soooo done with this team. I will be the anti-fan and root for them to lose every game until this fucked up family sells the team. I wouldn't think Kevin Warren would allow that to happen again, but if he does that will be on this fucked up deranged family that is still counting fucking nickles. Edit: Just to be clear 2 games a year I will root for them regardless, those against the Packers. I may be an idiot, but I'm not an imbecile.
The beat the Lions and Vikings, this team is trending up. 100% we keep Eberlose for a lame duck season.
In 2023 the Bears Saga continues to write itself. I'm struggling to find a silver lining in this happening, but the defense has shown it has life, and overall the team as a whole hasn't mailed it in and continues to battle. So the Bears will only replace the OC with another OC that is brain-dead only because the top candidates will likely get head coaching positions, and not lateral moves, and the Bears offense will again wallow on the field yet another year. ...and the beat goes on.
I have now been hearing playoffs? I feel like fucking Mora here. PLAYOFFS? I get the schedule is easy, but was that win against the Lions really that convincing? I mean, I didn't see it, would I be drinking this kool aid too?
It has more to do with how lame the NFL is this year than the Bears being that good. Teams just can’t get out of there own way and there are a ton of injuries to teams original QB1. That said the Bears just won 2 games in a row for the first time in the Flus era. They are not winning 6 straight to finish the season. If by some miracle the Bears pull off the fantasy finish. Win the next three then beat the Packers in a win and in game in Lambo then yea your not firing Flus. If Fields puts this team on his back and wins a playoff game? Then we will not be drafting a QB. I predict a sloppy loss in Cleveland and we are all back here Monday posting our mock drafts.
I’ll be slightly more optimistic. I see a fantastic opportunity for a win, or a conversation reopened about shitcanning Der Flus. Cleveland will be down their starting C, starting OTs and their 3rd string OT, multiple starters on their front 7, their all pro OG Bitonio didn’t practice Thursday or Friday, and statue Joe Flacco is starting at QB. I don’t like Braxton Jones or anybody vs Myles Garrett (didn’t he have 5 sacks or something ridiculous last time the bears played Cleveland?), but this game lines up for a W for the bears. But it is the bears, they can absolutely screw this up.
And look what they did, heh. From CBS: "This was a good week for quarterbacks who are trying to revive their career. In Cleveland, the Browns beat the Bears 20-17 after Joe Flacco mustered some fourth-quarter magic out of nowhere. With the Browns trailing 17-7 in the fourth, Flacco responded by throwing for 212 yards in the FOURTH QUARTER alone. If you're wondering how impressive that is: It's the most by any Browns QB in any quarter since at least 1991. AND it's the most by any player in the fourth quarter in any game this season. " So as good as the Bears D was against the very banged up O-line of CLE, they still shit the bed. I forgive them for the most part because the offense was just that anemic, but goddamn. Other thoughts: - Eberlose needs to go. Throwing a hail mary at the end of the half rather than attempt a FG is ridiculous. Whether he doesn't know that ties his career long, or he was afraid of a return, it's nonsense. They also turtled up at the end and begged Cleveland to come back. He sucks. - There was one play early on where they had Moore in motion, they snap the ball as he reaches Jones and Jones gets blown back so hard he actually knocked Moore on the ground. I think it was Garrett but still, pretty comical. - Watching the game I didn't blame Justin too much. Yeah, he needs to make quicker decisions and be more decisive, but good lord was the offensive line bad. They were absolutely outmuscled. That and Getsy's cute bullshit. We still need to move on, but the focus on him alone is a bit much. Reddit is an absolute hive of either he is an MVP waiting to happen, or the worst player since .... I don't know, pick your worst Bears QB, there are enough to choose from. I'm sick of it honestly. - Cards, Falcons and Packers. All teams playing shitty? I'd put the odds at 50% or less on the Bears winning any one of these games. Fuck this team, and fuck me for watching them again.
Maybe this is presumptuous of me (The kitchen door is locked, looks like the damn sammiches will have to make themselves), but what is your personal best case scenario for the team at this point? And you can't use the word, 'if'. Also, is Fields the scapegoat or does he have it in him to become a more reliable and confident QB? You know, like if the offense suddenly started playing like the defense?
The McCaskeys sell the team. Fields isn't the scapegoat his inability to be a consistent QB is on display every week. Fields is like a Harbor Freight tool he might get you by on a small job, but depending on him to be the guy week in and week out consistently is another story. I'm confident at this point he's not that guy. They already are playing like the defense, the opposing teams defense.
