He really has explosive burst power and he can catch a pass out of the backfield, he just needs to put that game together and be more consistent. Maybe with increased PT, he will achieve more of a balanced approach.

Vikings to open Justin Jefferson’s 21-day practice window

Justin Jefferson is on the way back.

The Vikings are set to designate Jefferson to return from injured reserve, opening his 21-day practice window, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

While Jefferson will start practicing, NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero separately reported on Tuesday that the receiver is unlikely to play this week against the Saints.

Jefferson has 36 catches for 571 yards with three touchdowns. Despite missing the last four weeks, Jefferson still leads the team in receiving yards, though both T.J. Hockenson (547) and Jordan Addison (534) are creeping up that chart.

The Vikings play the New Orleans, Denver, and Chicago before their Week 13 bye at the start of December.

Joshua Dobbs: It’s been awesome to have Kirk Cousins as a resource

Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs found some instant success in his debut with his new team last week, becoming NFC offensive player of the week for his performance in the victory over the Falcons.

Now Dobbs will get his first start with Minnesota when the team takes on New Orleans in Week 10.

While Dobbs has proven himself to be a capable quarterback this season, he’s still just getting to know the Vikings’ personnel and playbook. Fortunately for Dobbs, he has Kirk Cousins in his corner, even as the veteran QB is recovering from a torn Achilles.

“He’s been in the complex starting his rehab,” Dobbs said in his Wednesday press conference. “We actually share the same agent, so I was able to get connected with him pretty quickly once I got up here, and it’s been great to have him as a resource. He’s been awesome. The first thing he said was, ‘If you need anything, want to know more about the offense, whatever you need – don’t hesitate to call, text.’ And he’s been in our meetings.”

While Cousins’ focus last week was trying to get Jaren Hall ready to play, Dobbs noted he was there trying to take in as much information as possible “like a sponge.” Clearly, that worked out.

“So, just being able to bounce ideas off of him, ask him how he sees different plays that we’re installing, it’s been awesome,” Dobbs said, “and I’ll continue to use him as a resource.”

Dobbs completed 20-of-30 passes for 158 yards with two touchdowns last week, also rushing seven times for 66 yards with a TD. In nine games between Arizona and Minnesota this season, Dobbs has a 63.2 percent completion rate for 1,727 yards with 10 touchdowns and five picks.

Ezra Cleveland: Trade from Vikings to Jaguars was a surprise, I had no idea

Ezra Cleveland had played his entire career for the Vikings, who drafted him in 2020, until last week’s trade deadline, when he was sent to the Jaguars. He never saw it coming.

“It was definitely a surprise,” Cleveland said, via USA Today. “My agent called me a little bit before it happened and let me know. I had no idea.”

Cleveland said it hurt a little bit to know the team he had always played for no longer wanted him, but he thinks he’s a good fit on the Jaguars’ offensive line.

“A little bit. I feel like anyone who was in that situation, they’d feel that way. But that’s just the NFL. It’s a new team, I’ve got to learn everybody’s names, get to know them. The o-line’s been great so far, I’m excited to play with them,” Cleveland said.

Cleveland expects to be a backup at left guard this week against the 49ers but says he’s ready for whatever the Jaguars ask him to do.

“If they want me to play, then I’ll play. If I’m a backup, I’ll be a backup,” Cleveland said. “I’m here to support the guys, get to know them, learn the offense the best I can, and I’ll be ready when my number is called. I think I got the playbook down, pretty much.”

With the shock of the trade worn off, Cleveland is now ready to get to work.

Justin Jefferson: Getting better every day, want to make sure hamstring is 100 percent

Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since going on injured reserve with a hamstring injury and he gave an update on how he’s feeling during a session with reporters on Thursday.

Jefferson said that his hamstring is feeling “better and better every single day,” but that he “can’t really put a date” on when he will be back in the lineup. Jefferson said hamstrings are “a difficult injury” because of their propensity to linger and that he wants to be sure he’s fully recovered so that he can avoid a relapse.

“They want me 100 percent as I do as well,” Jefferson said. “I don’t want to go out there 80, 90 percent and have the chance of hurting it again. It’s just day-to-day and when that time comes I’ll definitely be ready to step out on that field.”

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said Wednesday that it would “probably be a little aggressive” to think Jefferson could play against the Saints this weekend and nothing Jefferson said on Thursday suggests he is targeting Sunday for his return to the offense. It does seem to be getting closer, though, and that’s good news for a Vikings team that remains in the playoff hunt.

Report: Vikings plan to sign Anthony Barr

Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks is set to miss time after having a surgical procedure on his shin Sunday and the Vikings reportedly plan to bring back a familiar face to round out the position group.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Vikings plan to sign Anthony Barr as a free agent. Barr was a Vikings first-round pick in 2014 and he was a four-time Pro Bowler during his eight years with the club.

Barr moved on to play for the Cowboys last season. He had 58 tackles, a sack, and two fumble recoveries in 14 regular season games and nine more tackles in the postseason.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said rookie Ivan Pace will likely wear the green dot on his helmet while Hicks is out of action. Troy Dye, Nick Vigil, and Brian Asamoah are also on the roster at linebacker.

I think he takes good care of himself. NFL.com said he would spend some time on the practice squad to get things ready. He's really a depth move, as the LB position is wearing thin like a few other positions.

Vikings place Jordan Hicks on injured reserve... and Gaskin is back.

The Vikings placed linebacker Jordan Hicks on injured reserve Tuesday, the team announced.

The team signed four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Anthony Barr to the practice squad to help replace Hicks. Barr spent eight seasons in Minnesota after the Vikings drafted him in the first round in 2014.

Hicks spent two nights in a local hospital after developing compartment syndrome in his right leg Sunday. He underwent an immediate procedure to relieve pressure and swelling in his shin.

He posted a statement on social media after being released from the hospital Tuesday.

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me the past few days and for all of your continued prayers,” Hicks wrote. “The surgery was a huge success and I’m grateful for all of the doctors, nurses and medical staff who treated me. Looking forward to getting back out there with the guys soon!”

Defensive coordinator Brian Flores said Hicks is “in good spirits.”

“It’s a big loss to put it bluntly,” Flores said, via Andrew Krammer of the Star-Tribune.

The Vikings also announced they signed running back Myles Gaskin to the practice squad Tuesday. They released defensive lineman Michael Dogbe from the practice squad in a corresponding move.

Gaskin has played one game with the Vikings and one with the Rams this season, seeing eight total special teams snaps.

In his five-year career, Gaskin has 462 touches for 2,056 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The Vikings may have another option at quarterback when they take on the Broncos this weekend.

Minnesota has opened Nick Mullens’ practice window, designating the quarterback to return from injured reserve.

Mullens has been out with a back injury.

With Kirk Cousins out due to a torn Achilles, Joshua Dobbs is likely the team’s starting quarterback through the rest of the season. But Mullens projects to be Dobbs’ backup whenever he’s healthy enough to be activated to the 53-man roster.

Rookie Jaren Hall missed last week’s game with a concussion, but could return for Week 11. Practice squad QB Sean Mannion was elevated to be Dobbs’ backup in Week 10.

lol... he's a practice squad groupie. Played with the Rams, then the Vikings then Seattle then back to the Vikings then back to Seattle and now on the practice squad with the Vikings again till being promoted to backup today because Hall still being treated with kid-gloves do to a concussion. All of this since 2018.
