Big Ten coaches urge action against Michigan Jim Harbaugh’s peers want something to be done about him. Pete Thamel of ESPN.com reports that the “vast majority” of Big Ten coaches urged the conference to take action against Michigan for its sign-stealing operation, during a call on Wednesday with Big Ten commissioner Tony Pettiti. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh exited the call after roughly 30 minutes. It continued for roughly an hour after that, with the coaches from the conference sounding off on the NCAA’s investigation into the situation. According to Thamel, the call was “intense and emotional.” “Collectively, the coaches want the Big Ten to act -- right now,” a source familiar with the call told Thamel. “What are we waiting on? We know what happened.” The call included an explanation to Pettiti regarding the manner in which the sign-stealing operation worked. Language used during the call included words, per Thamel, like “tainted” and “fraudulent” and “unprecedented.” It also created a huge edge for Michigan, knowing (for example) what the opposing offense was going to do before it happened. “People don’t understand the seriousness of it,” an unnamed source told Thamel. “How it truly impacted the game plan. To truly know if it’s a run or a pass, people don’t understand how much of an advantage that was for Michigan.” The Big Ten, per Thamel, has the power to punish the school and/or its staff under the conference’s sportsmanship policy. “An unprecedented violation of the rules would require unprecedented action from the Big Ten,” another unnamed source told Thamel. The whole thing stinks. Harbaugh has said he didn’t know it was happening. Given the evidence that has surfaced in published reports, Harbaugh would have to be Mr. Magoo to not realize what was going on. That arguably is nearly as bad as knowing about it, given the importance of the job Harbaugh holds. PFT
Harbaugh is also locked in a separate NCAA inquiry regarding misleading investigators and illegal recruiting during the COVID-19 dead period.
Latest rumors have a trade for BB to Washington and Harbaugh to Vegas... so Ive read, but its all just pure speculation. The BB thing is kinda weird... I read that his contract extension was 'leaked' so who even knows if he had signed anything and why is it secretive? As an Ohio State fan, this Harbaugh stuff is really cool... he's in some potentially serious stuff. And of course nobody knows or has seen anything. I guess if your a cheater, you may as well be a liar too.
To be an Ohio State fan, I also feel a little vindication. One year Michigan had become one of the gimme teams on the schedule, the next (which is within the timeline of when the investigation shows this sign stealing scheme to be hatched) year they were college playoff contenders and beat tOSU for the first time since 2011. 2020 Harbaugh just said "fuck it" and cancelled the game. The ticket scandel goes back to 2020, 2021 and 2022... So, the elaborate sign stealing program began right about the time the Wolverines miraculously turned the program around. So, Buckeyes fan or not, are we to believe that is just coincidence and they really did turn the program around without the aid of stealing the signs? There is no way to know for sure as they have all the data needed to finish this year out knowing the oppositions plays. If I were playing Michigan, I would scrap the realy signs and go old school running plays in from the sidelines. At the other end of the investigation.. The NCAA needs to embrace the proven technology and put microphones in the QB and a designated defensive players helmet, which will eliminate the possibility of this happening in the future. Hell, I would implement it into the 2023/2024 NCAA playoffs for testing. As a league, the Big10 commissioner, Tony Petitti, should allow beginning immediately any school to allow the new technology into any of their home game schedules. NCAA should be working with Big10 ADs to give any exemptions needed to allow the technology, for ANY NCAA team, not just the Big10. This technically could give any Big10 team an advantage if they were to use it in the playoffs. In this day and age, if they passed a rule today, they should have the technology in place to begin using it in week 11. There are so many stadiums in the US using it today, the tech companies could implement it in a matter of a couple of days for all D1 schools that want it for their home games week 11. Then add the rest in week 12. It really doesn't need a huge rollout. This is the only way to take the taint off of the 2023 season, short of forfeiting the Michigan football season.
Try as I might to be neutral regarding the sign stealing scandal at TSUN, I actually feel bad for the Michigan players from the past two to three years. What is confounding to me , if true, is that Michigan had enough player talent to win games without cheating.
First off they probably would never even consider a forfeiture of the Michigan season and p[ersonally I dont want that my self. The technology on this planet today with satellites, cell phones, cameras everywhere and all that jazz makes cheating easy, plain and simple its easy to cheat if you so decide. Penalties for breaking the laws and regs already in place need to be enforced with stiff penalties. Personally, Im tired of the cat and mouse going on about sign stealing. Maybe the teams need to be more stealth in their sign propagation system. Encryption is the key, but how do you do that? Ive seen teams in the ncaa have a guys on the side-lines showing delibrately false signs as to confuse the 'sign stealers' , thats been a part of the games forever. On the other hand, If Michigan is in blatant violation of already founded rules, then let the chips fall where they may... everybody and their brother went after the Buckeyes with scrutiny, especially under Urban.
Just saw a graphic on ESPN regarding the sign stealing affair. Since hiring Stalions, Michigan is 21-1. Can’t remember the difference in offensive points but they were scoring quite a bit more and the defense was giving up almost 11 points a game less. Just a tad too fishy for my liking. Not too happy with the Big 10 commish sitting idly on this so far. He has said he doesn’t want to do anything rash and hasty yet he suspended a few players in the “Michigan tunnel” incident before any investigation had been done at all. There’s proof Stalion purchased tickets at other opponents. They have video proof of him at games. With the offensive, defensive and team record improving drastically, there is no way in hell Harbaugh is clean.
Michigan fires staffer at heart of sign-stealing investigation The first shoe has fallen in the Michigan sign-stealing operation. Connor Stalions, the Naval Academy graduate and Marine Corps captain turned shadowy football analyst who allegedly/reportedly spearheaded the effort to crack the code of hand signals used by future Michigan opponents, has been fired. The news was first reported by Dan Wetzel of Yahoo.com. It’s the first tangible action taken by anyone in connection with the investigation. The question now becomes whether and to what extent Stalions will cooperate with Michigan, the Big Ten, and/or the NCAA in assisting the investigation — assuming he didn’t already spill the proverbial beans in connection with the behind-the-scenes efforts to get to the bottom of the situation. Stalions allegedly/reportedly arranged for a network of minions to attend games and record the signals used by upcoming Michigan opponents. Past reporting from a variety of publications suggested that Stalions bought tickets to multiple games. One unnamed source came forward to admit that he was paid to attend games and film the sideline of future Michigan foes. There are still many unresolved questions that hopefully will be answered in the coming days and weeks. Video has emerged of Stalions possibly communicating directly with head coach Jim Harbaugh during a game, potentially telling him that signals from the opposing sideline indicated “pressure” from the opposing defense. Some also have raised questions about Stalions’s potential presence on the Central Michigan sideline for the September 2 game against Michigan State. CMU coach Jim McElwain has said there’s “no place in football” for Stalions to be where he was (if he was) and doing what he was doing (if he was doing it), others are having a hard time believing that no one from Central Michigan was aware that someone from another program had both the credential and the clothing to blend in with others on the sidelines. “There is no way he snuck down on the sideline,” one source with an NFL team told PFT. “Wearing gear, with sunglasses and a play script and a credential. Someone would have called him out. There is a high number of security [personnel], and coaches know who belongs down there and who doesn’t.” It has been a crazy story, with many developments. Few have been good for Michigan. We’ll see where it all goes from here, now that Stalions is officially no longer an employee of the school’s football program.
I just read another article that said he resigned. Also states that nobody else was aware of his sign stealing or was told to do it. Only he was guilty. All I have to say is that is a really shitty lie. If no one else is aware then why did he need to scout and steal signs. And if he was stealing signs…why?……..especially if he wasn’t telling anyone about it. Did he take over all play calling so no coach knew how to utilize those stolen signs? The whole coaching staff and Harbaugh are complicit. Please don’t judge me as high and mighty. I’ll be the first to admit that almost every major program is doing something shady or at least in the gray areas. When they get caught and it gets dragged out into the press, I’ll be angry at them too.
