I just got home from a conference in NOLA and was joking with the parking attendant at the hotel about the rivalry when I left. We originally weren't even in the same division, and the league only threw us together so that we would be doormats for the 49ers and Rams.

 

Ill take the Saints for tonight, please.

It wasn't that bad. I was a Rams fan at the time. And you're right, it was either the Rams or 9ers. But when we played the Saints? I always had to hold my breath. Those damn Saints would always steal a win when the Rams needed it most. I still miss George Allen and the fearsome foursome.

 

And even before that. The Falcons came into the league the year before the NFL went to divisions. There were simply the two conferences.

When the Saints came in, the league stuck New Orleans in with Dallas, Washington and Philadelphia. Atlanta was thrown in with the Rams, 49ers and... the Baltimore Colts. It also wasn't the NFC West. The league went with division names seven letters long that began with C. Falcons and Saints were in the Coastal and Capitol divisions, respectively. (The other two were Century and Central.)

A year later, the league kicked New Orleans over to the Century division in order to put the Giants with the Dallas, Washington and Philadelphia group. That meant the Saints were now division rivals with the Steelers, Browns, and Cardinals. The next year they flipped the Giants and Saints back like they were the prior year. WTF???

Finally in 1970 the merger moved the Colts, Steelers and Browns to the AFC, and the Saints got dumped in with the Falcons in the new "West".

On the bright side, Sesame Street was on the air by then and the league realized how stupid it was to have all division names begin with C. Either that or they simply couldn't think up two more 7-letter C words. Otherwise we might have had the AFC Cyclone division and the NFC Cabaret division.
