How do you not just put the ball up in that situation? What's the worst that can happen?

Sunday Night Football: 49ers overpower Cowboys 42-10

The Cowboys’ moves this offseason were made with the 49ers in mind. San Francisco eliminated Dallas in each of the past two postseasons.

The Cowboys, though, discovered Sunday night that they are even farther away from the 49ers than they were.

San Francisco dominated Dallas, winning 42-10 in a game that wasn’t that close.

As it was, it ranks as the second-worst loss in Mike McCarthy’s career. In McCarthy’s first season in Green Bay in 2006, his Packers lost to New England 35-0. The previous worst loss he had with the Cowboys was a 38-10 defeat to Arizona in 2020.

The 49ers remained undefeated at 5-0, while the Cowboys fell to 3-2 and two games behind the Eagles in the NFC East.

The 49ers had more plays (66-48) and more yards (422-197) and fewer turnovers (1-4).

Dak Prescott, who threw two interceptions in the divisional round playoff loss to the 49ers in January, was picked three times Sunday. San Francisco also had four sacks and a recovery of a Tony Pollard fumble.

It was a frustrating night for the visitors.

49ers tight end George Kittle caught touchdown passes of 19, 38 and 10, his only three catches of the night, and Christian McCaffrey scored in a 14th consecutive game.

Brock Purdy went 17-of-24 for 252 yards and four touchdowns. All he does is win, moving his career regular-season record to 10-0 as a starter.

It was a beat down and a beating for the Cowboys. They lost returner KaVontae Turpin, who scored the team’s only touchdown on a 26-yard reception, to an ankle injury; special teams player C.J. Goodwin (shoulder), linebacker Leighton Vander Esch (neck) and safety Donovan Wilson (leg) also left with injuries. Prescott had his middle finger taped during the game.

Shanahan was the first this season to expose a part of the Dallas defense that is soft, and now you are going to see more teams on the Cowboys' schedule expose it.

Work from the middle of the field, in front and behind the linebackers and have the play develop from inside leverage.

I'm convinced that Kyle's understanding of levels for throwing lanes, rather than horizontal windows (passers' view), is something that is rarely recognized, and the more I watch the Dolphins the more I think he directly got this understanding, or a better appreciation for it, from McDaniels.

McCaffrey extended his streak of consecutive games with a touchdown to 14 with a 1-yard run late in the second quarter. He joined Dallas’ Emmitt Smith as the only other NFL player of the past 40 years with a touchdown streak that long.

Vikings WR Justin Jefferson to seek multiple opinions on injured hamstring

Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson will seek multiple medical opinions on his injured hamstring, head coach Kevin O'Connell said on Monday.

The coach didn't provide a timeline on Jefferson and is unsure if the wideout will be available Sunday against Chicago.

"Justin's still going through the evaluation process on that hamstring strain," O'Connell told reporters on Monday. "I'll keep you guys posted on what that timeline may look like and how his availability may be for this week or moving forward."

Jefferson left Sunday's home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth quarter with the hamstring injury. He did not return, ending his day with three catches on six targets for 28 yards.

O'Connell added that given Jefferson's competitive nature, the team would have to protect the wideout "from himself."

"I think there will probably be a couple different opinions on it, but we've got to get the MRI of it and take look and find out exactly what it is, where it is, if there's any other factors that go into it and determine what the best decision for him to get him back to 100 percent as fast as possible," O'Connell said. "He's down today. He obviously is one of the most ultra-competitors I've ever met, and shoot, he was trying to go back in the game as it was yesterday. So we're gonna have to medically make a good decision and help kind of almost protect him from himself a little bit in a way where we've got to take care of him and get him back to 100 percent."

If Jefferson is out any amount of time, Kirk Cousins will lean on rookie wideout Jordan Addison, who led the Vikes with six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown on Sunday, and K.J. Osborn at receiver. Tight end T.J. Hockenson could also see an uptick in targets if Jefferson is out.

Raiders hold off Packers last-minute drive to come away with win

In as much of a must-win one could have in October, the Las Vegas Raiders showed up when the lights were on them.

Late in the third quarter, the Raiders were close to a practically insurmountable 1-4 record, but they shut out the Green Bay Packers in the final quarter to slide away with a 17-13 victory.

The Raiders led 10-3 at half after they scored on back-to-back drives, one of which was a nine-yard touchdown by Jakobi Meyers.

Vegas did miss a field goal at the end of the half that would have secured a double-digit lead, so when Green Bay scored 10 points in the third quarter (including an AJ Dillon touchdown), the Raiders were kicking themselves.

However, after the Packers took a 13-10 lead, the Raiders responded with a 10-play drive that was capped off by a Josh Jacobs touchdown up the gut to begin the fourth quarter with a Raiders 17-13 lead.

Jordan Love threw a costly interception with 9 minutes and 11 seconds to go after Green Bay got across midfield, but even after the Raiders punted, the Packers went three-and-out, giving Las Vegas the ball back with less than six minutes on the clock.

On 4th and 1, at the two-minute warning, the Raiders opted to try a 52-yard field goal, but it doinked off the right upright, giving Green Bay a chance for the win with just under two minutes to go on their 42-yard line. The Packers got as far as the 35-yard line, but looking for Christian Watson in the end zone, Love underthrew the ball and it was intercepted by Amik Robertson for a touchback, sealing the victory.

Jimmy Garoppolo completed 22 of his 31 passes for 208 yards in his first game against his old team while Davante Adams was held to just four catches and 45 yards, but Meyers had seven receptions for 75 yards and a score.

On the defensive side of the ball, four of Maxx Crosby's five tackles were for loss.

Love's struggles continued, as the 2020 first-rounder went 16-for-30 with three interceptions.

Both teams moved to 2-3 on the season.

Report: De’Von Achane to miss multiple weeks, could go on IR

NFL defenses have had a hard time slowing Dolphins rookie running back De’Von Achane down in recent weeks, but it looks like Miami’s upcoming opponents won’t have to come up with a plan for dealing with him.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Achane is set to miss multiple weeks because of a knee injury. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said at his Monday press conference that Achane was being evaluated by doctors, but there was no sign of an injury while he was running for 151 yards and a touchdown against the Giants on Sunday.

Schefter adds that Achane will get another opinion on the injury Tuesday and that will determine whether or not he goes on injured reserve.

Raheem Mostert will be in line for more work with Achane out of action. The Dolphins could also activate Jeff Wilson from injured reserve this week in order to add more depth to the backfield.

Vikings plan to place Justin Jefferson on injured reserve

Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson will miss at least four games with a hamstring injury.

The Vikings plan to put Jefferson on injured reserve, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Under NFL rules, that would mean Jefferson will miss at least the Vikings’ next four games, against the Bears, 49ers, Packers and Falcons. The earliest he could return would be November 12 against the Saints.

Jefferson is the NFL’s reigning Offensive Player of the Year, and his injury is a huge blow to the Vikings, who at 1-4 are in desperate need of a quick turnaround that now looks unlikely to happen.

The 24-year-old Jefferson is currently in the fourth year of his rookie contract. He’s scheduled to make $19.7 million next year on his fifth-year option season, but he’ll want to get a lucrative long-term deal instead of playing out his fifth year. He has played well enough to earn a deal that makes him the NFL’s highest-paid wide receiver, and he’ll have to hope this injury isn’t serious enough to change that.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell has indicated the amount of time Jefferson misses will be determined by how well he responds to treatment.

Read something interesting that suggested Vikings should go ahead and trade Cousins and that the Jets would be a great landing spot and I thought that was a great suggestion.

Running back James Conner is set to miss the next stretch of games for the Cardinals.

Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said on Monday that Conner could miss some time after injuring his knee in Sunday’s loss to the Bengals. Multiple reports on Tuesday say that Conner will miss multiple weeks and that he could go on injured reserve, which would mean he misses at least four games.

Conner was injured early in Sunday’s loss and has 68 carries for 364 yards and two touchdowns so far this season. He’s also caught eight passes for 30 yards.

Emari Demercado and Corey Clement were the other running backs active in Week Five. Keaontay Ingram was inactive and the Cardinals claimed Tony Jones Jr. off of waivers on Monday.

Deebo Samuel says a 49ers-Cowboys playoff rematch “might be a little bit worse” than 42-10

The Cowboys might want to be careful what they wish for.

In the aftermath of Sunday night’s 42-10 loss to the 49ers, Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons took issue with 49ers tight end George Kittle wearing (and displaying) a T-shirt that said “Fuck Dallas” under his jersey.

“I just feel like he’s making it way more personal than it had to be,” Parsons said on his podcast, via ESPN.com. “Kittle’s my guy, but I’m going to say this: Laugh now, cry later. . . . We got something for that, just trust. If we see them again, just trust. . . . You gonna make it personal? We can make it personal.”

49ers receiver Deebo Samuel wonders whether a rematch is something the Cowboys personally should want.

“42 to 10, I don’t think you wanna see us again,” Samuel said Tuesday on FanDuel TV’s Up & Adams. “It might be a little bit worse.”

Deebo is great, but there’s no reason to stir things up. The Cowboys were surely feeling leery about a potential postseason rematch, possibly to the point where they didn’t want one. Suggesting the next time around might be “a little bit worse” could be the thing that causes the Cowboys to pivot from dreading Round 2 to embracing it.

Then again, it might not matter. The 49ers are the better team. And, yes, it could have been worse on Sunday night. Which means that, yes, it could be worse if/when they do it again.

Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt hurt his finger in Sunday’s win over the Ravens
, but he’s not expected to miss any time as a result of the injury.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that Watt dislocated his finger and tore ligaments in the 17-10 Steelers victory. Watt remained in the game and he is expected to be ready to go when the Steelers return from their bye for a road game against the Rams.

Watt may need to have the finger surgically repaired after the season, but a determination on that will be made based on how it heals while he continues to play.

Watt had two sacks — including one of Baltimore’s final offensive play of the game — and a fumble recovery to help the Steelers get to 3-2 on the season.

Doubtful but the pressure with the vikings would be much less than new york which may allow him to grow into what new york thought he could be.
