Bears head coach Matt Eberflus took over the defensive play calling heading into Week Two and he’s not thinking about giving the job to anyone else.

Eberflus said on Wednesday that he plans to call the team’s plays for the rest of the season. Alan Williams was in that role as the team’s defensive coordinator to open the season, but he missed Week Two for personal reasons before resigning ahead of last Sunday’s loss to the Chiefs.

The Bears gave up 456 yards in that 41-10 loss and they’ve given up 106 points so far this season. That’s good for 31st in the league and they’re also 27th in the league in points scored, so there hasn’t been much working well for the Bears on any front.

The longer that continues, the greater the likelihood that Eberflus will be giving up some or all of his roles in Chicago before the start of next season.

TONIGHTS INJURY REPORT...

After conflicting reports about whether Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) and left tackle Taylor Decker (ankle) would play, the official word is out. Both players are active.

Of course, players can dress and not play, but Montgomery and Decker are expected to take the field.

The Lions’ inactives are fullback Jason Cabinda (knee), safety Kerby Joseph (hip), running back Zonovan Knight, defensive lineman Brodric Martin, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (knee/hamstring) and offensive guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai (knee).

The Packers will have running back Aaron Jones (hamstring) and receiver Christian Watson (hamstring). Both players were questionable.

Cornerback Jaire Alexander (back) will miss his second consecutive game.

The team’s other inactives are receiver Malik Heath, safety Anthony Johnson Jr., safety Zayne Anderson (hamstring), linebacker Brenton Cox Jr., linebacker De’Vondre Campbell (ankle) and left guard Elgton Jenkins (knee).

 

Atlanta's 20-6 loss to the Lions last week suddenly doesn't seem quite so bad, with the Lions stomping Green Bay 24-3 in the second quarter.

 

And I picked the Packers at home, duh.

Next Gen stat of the game: Aidan Hutchinson posted career highs in QB pressures (8) and pressure rate (21.1%), along with his 1.5 sacks tonight against the Packers. Hutchinson has generated at least five QB pressures in his past six games (since Week 14, 2022).

NFL Research: Sam LaPorta has more receptions (22) in his first four career games than any tight end in NFL history. The only tight end with more receiving yards than LaPorta (242) is Hall of Famer Mike Ditka (315).

Lions won that game early by setting the tone in the trenches. Dominated. They are a damn good football team. So far, the preseason hype is turning out to be real. Road games in KC and Green Bay this early and doing well in both places is quite a good showing on their part.

 

After going 0-7 against the Green Bay Packers as a member of the Chicago Bears, Montgomery rushed for a career-best three touchdowns to drive the Detroit Lions to a 34-20 win on Thursday Night Football.

"It definitely felt great," Montgomery told reporters about getting his first win over the Packers. "You know I haven't been able to do that, but to come here with the group of guys that I'm able to play with, it's a blessing."

Montgomery was the definition of a workhorse on Thursday, piling up 32 carries, which matched a career high and stand as the most for any player this season in the NFL.

He scored on runs of 3, 2 and 1 yard in the first, second and fourth quarters, respectively. All told, he had 121 yards on the aforementioned 32 carries for an average of 3.8 yards per carry. The latter is hardly a celebratory statistic, but he was able to ground and pound the Packers, helping to propel Detroit to a 27-0 run in the first half before quelling any comeback hopes with a score with six minutes to go. According to Next Gen Stats, Montgomery battered and bruised the Packers with 113 yards after contact -- the most in a single game in his career.

"He does get better throughout the game," Lions quarterback Jared Goff said. "He gets better the more he gets hit. The more that he's able to see the holes and see what's going on -- and yeah, he did get better. I think there was two types of runs like where the lane was wide open, and he was running right through them doing his thing. Then, there was runs where there wasn't much there and he kind of made something out of nothing. That's when you know your guy is in the zone a little bit. You try to keep feeding him and he did his thing tonight."

The impact made by Montgomery, along with his workload, was all the more impressive considering he'd missed Week 3 with a thigh injury and was questionable to play Thursday.

Matt Lafleur, Ladies n Gentlemen...

Packers coach Matt LaFleur was not in a cheery mood after Thursday night’s 34-20 loss to the Lions.

Asked what caused the Packers’ struggles in the first half, LaFleur suggested that just about everything went wrong, and he didn’t appreciate the question.

“We sucked,” LaFleur said. “We got our ass kicked. If I knew, it wouldn’t have happened. That’s a BS question.”

As LaFleur got more questions about what went wrong, his answer didn’t change.

“They whooped us. They manhandled us. Again, if I knew the answer to that, it wouldn’t have happened,” LaFleur said.

The Lions led 27-3 at halftime, and LaFleur called that “humiliating.”

“Give Detroit a lot of credit. They came in and whooped us pretty good,” LaFleur said. “They manhandled us, really, in every phase.”

The 2-2 Packers are now a game behind the Lions in the NFC North, and they’ll have some time to regroup with an extra-long work week before their next game on Monday, October 9, against the Raiders.

That’s two prime time wins for the Lions, one against the defending NFL champions. Have to say I thought they were getting a little over hyped, but 4 games in they look great. Been a long time since the Lions were an actual contender for anything except a #1 pick. Little hard not to cheer for them a little if you’re not a fan of a rival NFC North team.

 

The last time the Lions won a postseason game - even a wild card game, Bush (#41, Reagan's former VP) was president. Kinda nice to see the suffering possibly come to an end, even though one of their wins came against my team.
