It seems to just be a virus of some sort. They are doing tests again. They took more blood today. Hopefully it's just something that should get better on it's own easily enough.
Bengals OC Brian Callahan: We have a good plan to get Joe Burrow ready for Week 1 Bengals coach Zac Taylor declined to commit to quarterback Joe Burrow playing in Week 1. Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan was not so circumspect. “I think he’s in a good place and we got a good plan in place for him to get ready for Week 1,” Callahan said of Burrow, via Ben Baby of ESPN.com. For Burrow to play, the broader plan should include Burrow getting his second contract. Without it, he shouldn’t be playing. Without it, he shouldn’t even be practicing. Both sides have kept things quiet regarding any progress, or lack thereof, for a new deal for Burrow. With total compensation of $4.54 million in 2023, Burrow should refuse to play until the Bengals give him the contract he deserves. The Bengals play the Browns in Cleveland on September 10, to start the regular season. PFT
This is an absolute garbage perspective by PFT. Burrow will get paid and there is no doubt about that. For some media outlet to dictate what a player should or shouldn't do is ignorant and uninformed.
As the Seahawks gear up for their season opener against the Rams, it’s looking like they won’t have two key members of their secondary. Via Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune, head coach Pete Carroll said in a Friday interview on 93.3 KJR that safety Jamal Adams is ruled out for Week 1 and cornerback Devon Witherspoon is unlikely to play in the contest. Adams came off of the physically unable to perform list last week. He has been recovering from a quad injury suffered in the first game of the 2022 season. Carroll noted that the Seahawks will take their time in getting him back to play. But the fact that Seattle has him on its 53-man roster is an indication that Adams could be ready within the first four weeks of the season. Witherspoon — the No. 5 overall pick in this year’s draft — is dealing with a hamstring injury. “It’s going to be a race to get him for the opener,” Carroll said, via Bell. “Might not get that.” The Seahawks open against the Rams then play the Lions on the road in Week 2, the Panthers at home in Week 3, and the Giants on Monday night in Week 4 before a Week 5 bye. Agreed, these guys behind the mic slip in their opinions quite frequently and its a 9 out 10 times chance they insert foot in mouth, which even may be deliberate to stir the pot. Joe Burrow seems in a good spot and from what Ive read has a dialog with agent and ownership that keeps him (Joe) in good faith, so let it work out... thats what Joe has many times made perfectly clear in what he has said to the media.
One more little tid-bit I would like to add, speaking of QB's. Is this the season where Russell Wilson bounces back and make the Broncos a competitive team again?
Im also wondering if anybody is buying into Sam Howell? He's going to be interesting to watch, apparently he impressed beyond Jacoby Brissett. I havnt seen him play yet, so Ill be looking.
Finally got a 1st for him. But a devy 1st. Far below what I should have sold for. I'm only two over the roster limit now.
The Bears have settled on a backup quarterback for the start of the regular season. Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said last week that the team had not decided whether veteran Nathan Peterman or undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent would back up Justin Fields against the Packers. Bagent played well in the preseason and the Bears cut both Peterman and P.J. Walker on their way to setting their first 53-man roster, but re-signed Peterman after making other roster moves. The Bears opted for experience in the No. 2 role. The team released its depth chart for this week on Tuesday and it shows Peterman behind Fields with Bagent in the No. 3 role. If all goes according to the Bears’ plans, the choice won’t wind up mattering because both men will be strictly observers against Green Bay and for the rest of the season. PFT
I took a late flyer on Sam in a few leagues mainly because of Bieniemy being there now but when reports came out about the players boo hooing about his style ive kind of cooled on him (Howell)
Just another thought on the #3 QB rule... when the original rule was created in 1991, the active roster limit was 45 players. Now it's 48. If you wanted a third QB on the roster, you'd probably already have him with or without the emergency QB rule, because fitting him on the active list isn't as hard as it used to be. It's a small difference, but the lack of a benefit gained compared to the original rule is enough that most teams are skipping the third QB now where most teams used the third QB during the 1990s and 2000s. The old rule also had an advantage for developing those prospect QBs. Even if the first two guys weren't hurt, you could bring in the #3 QB to get some playing experience in the fourth quarter. That's not part of the new rule. And that's a shame, because it would then be a bigger advantage for having guys like Zappe, P.J. Walker, etc, etc on the regular roster. Here's a completely different alternative to consider for the next CBA: go back to 45 active players, but allow all of the inactives to become available as injury substitutions like in soccer - if someone gets hurt and is declared out for the rest of the game, the team reports him as ineligible and someone from the inactive list is declared eligible and allowed to play. You could then add that a QB on the inactive list would be allowed to play in the fourth quarter, the same as under the original emergency QB rule.
I’m all for getting rid of the practice squad and expanding the roster to 62 100% active roster players. 4 weeks IR for as many as necessary. Football is a rough sport and doesn’t need the constraint on the roster. Just keep the salary cap to keep the playing field level.
Joe Burrow: I’m ready to go Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was a full participant in practice on Wednesday and it looks like he’ll be a full participant in Cleveland on Sunday as well. Burrow was sidelined for more than a month by a calf injury, but he’s been steadily working his way back toward the lineup and he left no doubt about his plans for the team’s Week One game against the Browns. “I’m ready to go,” Burrow said at his press conference. Burrow has been coming off of a torn ACL and appendicitis heading into previous openers and said on Wednesday that he thinks he’s in the best Week One shape he’s ever been in. That should make for a lot of smiles around the Bengals as they began their push for a third straight AFC North title. PFT
Report: Joshua Dobbs to start at QB for Cardinals Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon has not publicly announced the team’s plan at quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Commanders, but he said on Wednesday that the team’s players know who will be starting and it appears that word has filtered out of the locker room. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Cardinals are expected to start Joshua Dobbs in Week One. Fifth-round pick Clayton Tune was the other option under consideration in Arizona. Dobbs has been with the Cardinals for less than two weeks, but has more professional experience than Tune and is familiar with the team’s offensive approach after spending time with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing in Cleveland last season. Rapoport notes that the Cardinals will re-evaluate their quarterback plans on a weekly basis as they wait for Kyler Murray to get the green light to return from a torn ACL. PFT
Welcome to the NFL, Haener. Saints rookie quarterback Jake Haener will not be available for the first six games of the regular season. The NFL announced on Wednesday that Haener has been suspended for those contests. Haener’s suspension came as a result of a violation of the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. Haener was a fourth-round pick this spring and appeared in all three of the team’s preseason games this spring. He went 38-of-72 for 395 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions in those contests. The Saints switched Taysom Hill’s position from tight end to quarterback earlier this week, which puts him and Jameis Winston on the depth chart as backups to Derek Carr to open the season. NBC
Now it makes sense they new suspension was coming question is do they leave on active roster or is he the emergency QB which would allow them.to activate another player but would mean he couldn't play unless the 2 qb get hurt. Under Payton he stays on the active cause he likes the way he could use him but don't know under Allen.
Haener issued this a short while ago... “I recently learned that I tested positive for a substance banned by the NFL earlier this summer,” Haener said. “I still do not know how the substance got into my body, as none of my supplements or prescribed medications contain the banned ingredient. I would never knowingly cheat the game that I love. However, I must take full responsibility for the failed test. I apologize to the Saints organization, my friends and my family for any distraction this suspension may cause. I am disappointed to be away from the team for the coming weeks, but I will learn and grow from this experience. I look forward to returning to the team as soon as possible.”
Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said Wednesday “players know the plan” of who will quarterback the team in the season opener. NFL Media reports Joshua Dobbs will start, which is expected since the other option is fifth-round pick Clayton Tune. Dobbs, though, is toeing the company line. “If I am the guy,” Dobbs said purposefully, via Darren Urban of the team website, “then I’ll be excited to go out and perform the way I can perform, represent the Cardinals and lead the team.” Dobbs arrived 13 days ago in a trade from Cleveland, where he played for Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing last season when Petzing was the Browns’ quarterbacks coach. He said that helped him “get [the offense] down pretty quick.” “We had last week; we have a full week of preparation this week,” Dobbs said. “There is plenty of time to get in the film room, get extra reps with my teammates. This is our life, football, so there is plenty of time to lock into the game plan, hold down details, work out any kinks and nuances, and get ready to play.” Dobbs, a fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2017, has two career starts. Both came last season with the Titans. Tune received the majority of reps at quarterback for the team in the preseason. PFT
Jared Goff, Patrick Mahomes face off for first time since 54-51 Monday night classic Lions quarterback Jared Goff and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will face off tonight in the NFL opener, and fans can only hope it’s as exciting as their previous matchup. The only other time that Goff and Mahomes have faced each other as starting quarterbacks was in 2018, when Goff’s Rams beat Mahomes’ Chiefs 54-51. It was the only game in NFL history when both teams topped 50 points. Mahomes passed for 478 yards and six touchdowns, but he also threw three interceptions. Goff threw for 413 yards and four touchdowns, and he had no interceptions. Both Mahomes and Goff lost two fumbles, and one fumble from each was returned for a touchdown. Mahomes also threw a pick-six. It was one of the most anticipated regular-season games in recent memory, with the Rams and Chiefs coming into the game with 9-1 records and generally being viewed as the two best teams in the NFL at the time. And it was an anticipated game that more than lived up to the hype. NBC
