So in 2022 the Browns spent a 4th round pick on a kicker. Now they cut him and trade a 7th rounder for a kicker that was gonna be cut anyway. I'm definitely not a GM....but that's some bad pick management there.
Good to see you back on the L4. You surprised me with the Kicker comment on the QB thread, but i dont care and no one else will either. Hope your well. York = bust, period. Browns had no choice but to cut the guy... I still dont get the high round draft picks for kickers. Didn't BB do that in NE? Cant recall, but taking kickers in the top 6 is always been taboo in my book. Sure they lead the League in scoring, sure they win games in the closing seconds, but it doesnt matter come draft time, in my opinion. The one good thing about Hopkins is consistency and he's already proven as a long time vet. 84.8% on FG's is good and he's lights out between 30 and 40 yards out, so if that continues, its a good move. At least they seen a huge hole in the program and addressed it.
It happens every year with every team, it just sticks out like a sore thumb because it's a Kicker. How many 1st rounders from 2021 are no longer on the picking team AND didn't receive like compensation for their elevated draft status? How many from 2019 were no longer on their original team in 2021 and are no longer in the league in 2023? At the end of the day, he has one of the strongest legs to ever enter the NFL, but when you are a team with deep playoff aspirations and you can't be counted on to win two pre-season games... well, you have to move on. As for spending a 7th round pick in 2025 on a kicker to replace the guy who can't hit in preseason, it's a 7th round pick. If the guy gets cut, you don't have control over whether or not he signs with you. It's a 7th round draft pick, for a kicker that didn't miss a single kick in preseason, despite not winning the job in LA. I still don't feel comfortable with him kicking in Cleveland... no one has their best kicking game in Cleveland.
Again, I understand the infatuation.. The guy is capable of making a 70 yard FG, that isn't an exaggeration. But as for the skill it takes to adjust for wind, etc.. he doesn't have a clue. Nearly every time he makes a mistake, he follows up with a major over adjustment. He's young, he could learn and if a dome team gets him, he could very well go on to have a great career. I just wouldn't want to be that team that has him and in the playoffs out doors have to count on him to win the game from 45 yards out.
I think the moral of the story is you probably shouldn't use a draft pick on a kicker. At least not before the 7th round. Swinging and missing on a DE in the 1st round is a lot different than taking a kicker in the 4th round when they are tons of skill position players that can probably help your team. Justin Tucker is the best in the game and he was undrafted. Robbie Gould was undrafted. If your GM uses a draft pick on a kicker...you should probably call for his head.
Would Kwesi-Adofo-Mensah trade TJ Hockenson? this guy is really scary who knows what he will do time is running out here it would be a big blow to Capt Kirk and would he think about trading Justin Jefferson? he scares the hell out of me
No, I think the moral of the story is, the NFL draft is a crap shoot, your odds just descend with each passing round. To be honest, I'm surprised more special teams players don't go in the mid rounds, because they are a higher percentage of succeeding. At the end of the day, there are so many of them and each team only needs one at each of the positions, so many talented players go straight home to look for real jobs after their college career. I can't imagine how many talented players get lost on college teams that spend about .5% on special teams. You either elevate yourself, or you ride off into the sunset. When you start singling out undrafted kickers, it's easy to do because 90% of all kickers in the NFL history were undrafted. You are talking semantics.. When you are trying to decide who the top 32 players in all of college football, I would hope you could at the very least find someone better than your 4th string talent. THAT to me is much worse, than ANY 4th round player. In most cases by the 4th round, you are talking about much less resource invested, you are filling for the needs of the team, not because of perceived talent above the other 2% of all college football. It was a comparison based solely on the fact that "other positions" are what you are proposing to be the importance here. It is solely that he is a kicker. At the end of the day, no GM will ever be able to guess correct on 99% of prospects as to who can acclimate to a professional level. Every kid in the draft has talent, the ones that can handle the lifestyle and pressure of being a professional are the ones that last longer than 2 years. You say, ok, go ahead and take one in the 7th if you don't want to risk the undrafted chaos. Only 28% of 4th round draft picks, regardless of position are retained past their rookie contract. 3 in every 4 fourth round picks are not worthy of the National Football League... 15% of 7th rounders make it past their rookie contract.. So you are arguing over a 13% difference of success rate between a 4th and 7th round pick. Facts: In 2022 the Browns had 9 draft picks between rounds 3-7. They had zero picks in the first 2 rounds thanks to the Deshaun Watson trade. Cade York was picked in the second round of the Browns draft, he was also the 5th of 9 picks taken. So, in this instance, they had already littered their rookie roster with 3rd and 4th round "talent" before taking the kicker. Circumstance changes everything. Perception is only as good as the eyes that see it. I didn't see you on here making bold statements about he GM when Perrion Winfrey was cut.. In case you were wondering why I bring him up? He is a 2022 rookie classmate of York who was drafted 16 picks before York, also in the 4th round. He was released a month ago after being accused of assault in April. The case was dropped, but he was cut anyway. Do you think it was because he was accused of something, or because he showed a 4th round talent and was one of the 75% that aren't cut out for the NFL?
I would put both on the untouchable list... He has already made the statement that they have committed to the passing game by cutting Dalvin Cook. If he blows up the passing game as well, then you have a prime example of why to fire a GM.
What is it with Browns fans getting pissy anytime a negative comment is made about their team? Tell your GM not to draft a kicker in the 4th round so you don't have to be so defensive.
I don't think I was being pissy at all... It's called a discussion. These are discussion boards. What's with Bears fans getting pussy hurt when someone responds to their post? edit: For the record, I don't really think it's ALL Bears fans...
Patriots cut Zappe and Cunningham today, so just 1 QB on the team, Mac Jones... that seems odd to me.
Bears need a QB also. Tyson Bagent (Undrafted DIV II) behind Fields is all they have, but they are #1 on the waiver wire so I expect that to change soon.
Currently, 13 teams are carrying 3 QB's... The teams with three quarterbacks are the Dolphins, Steelers, Colts, Texans, Titans, Raiders, Cowboys, Eagles, Vikings, Falcons, Panthers, Saints, and 49ers.
In regards to the 'new rule' on 3 QB's... The situation prompted Payton to raise a legitimate concern about the construction of the rule aimed at ensuring a team won’t be stuck with no quarterbacks — especially in a high-profile, standalone game. “I think there were a lot of people that felt like if the new rule said, ‘Hey, you could bring a third [quarterback] off your practice squad on game day, that would have possibly been a good solution,’” Payton told reporters on Tuesday. “The new rule basically says if you keep a third on your active [roster], you can bring him up free. What you had in Philadelphia versus San Francisco was a once in every four-year occurrence. “We like the two guys who are on the roster, and we think we are going to have a good practice squad quarterback. That’s the approach we are going to take. Now, there are some teams that will keep a third on their active [roster]. It’s really just your decision on how you want to handle your 53. The new rule still requires you to keep a third on your 53. I will be anxious to see—let’s call it a week from now—how many teams have three on their 53. I’m sure there will be a few, but we will have a third in the building.”
Ha ha Willie, love it. There'll always be people in the world who rub us the wrong way and I think the trick is to not let things get under our skin too quickly. Responding rationally and calmly to suspected insults takes the bite right out of the posts. A lot of times, this can result in a very interesting and enlightening discussion
