Anthony Richardson says he was “shocked” and “thankful” when told he’s Colts’ QB1

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson was not expecting to be greeted this morning with the news that he is the team’s starting quarterback.

Richardson told reporters today that he was surprised to get the starting quarterback job so soon, and that it’s only going to motivate him to justify the trust the team has put in him.

“Honestly, I was shocked,” Richardson said. “I’ve been grinding, putting in the work to get the title, but it’s not really all about the title. I’m just trying to make sure I’m ready for the team. Despite being labeled as QB1, I’ve still got other guys in the room helping me to get to that standard. I’m forever thankful for them. I appreciate them and I’m glad I did get the nod and have the trust of everybody in the building.”

It may be a shock that it happened today, but it’s not a shock that Richardson is the Colts’ starting quarterback, and that the Colts expect him to be their starter for years to come. They drafted him with the No. 4 overall pick for a reason, and the reason wasn’t to stand on the sideline.

Jaguars HC Doug Pederson compares Trevor Lawrence to past great QBs: 'He's one of those guys'

The Jacksonville Jaguars surprised many in 2022, surging to the AFC South title and winning a Wild Card game in Doug Pederson's first season as head coach. With the offseason hype surrounding the club, they won't sneak up on any opponents in 2023.

The key to the Jags taking the next step is quarterback Trevor Lawrence ascending to elite status in Year 2 of Pederson's system. So far, so good.

"The biggest thing that I've seen with Trevor, now going on two years, from where we had him a year ago in the offseason to today, just his confidence is incredible," Pederson said Monday, via the team's official transcript. "It's off the charts. He's put the past behind him, he's focused on the future, and really embraced this opportunity with this football team. The confidence level with him is extremely high, as it should be.

"I think about some of the young quarterbacks I've had and going into Year 2 with us, that's what you've seen. You've seen that confidence level increase, the understanding of the offense, and the dialogue that we have between Trevor and myself or Trevor and [offensive coordinator Press Taylor], Trevor and (quarterbacks coach) Mike McCoy, just the openness. That comes with maturity, and that comes with the confidence he has. Not only his ability, but also with understanding where he is within the system. It's fun to be around guys like that and young quarterbacks like that, again, as we've said, he's a sponge. He wants to learn. He wants to get better. Obviously, he's not where he wants to be or where we want him to be because we can always get better and improve. I think his overall leadership ability has really been the bright spot for him heading into training camp this year."

After a rookie season in which he led the NFL in interceptions with 17 while throwing only 12 touchdowns, Lawrence cut his INTs in half (8) and doubled his TD passes (25) in 2022. Lawrence became the second QB since 1950 to double his wins and pass TDs and cut his INTs in half from one season to the next (min. 10 starts each season), per NFL Research -- the other: Drew Brees (2003-04 with the San Diego Chargers).

Lawrence improved his passer rating by 23.3 points from 2021 (71.9) to 2022 (95.2), the largest increase in NFL history from a player's rookie season to his second season (min. 400 pass attempts each season). The previous holder of that distinction was Carson Wentz (+22.6) with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016 to '17 under then-head coach Doug Pederson.

Pederson has a knack for coaxing positive play from his quarterback. The difference is that unlike Wentz, who washed out after that one great season, Lawrence will continue to rise.

Pederson noted Monday that Lawrence's leadership in Year 2 of the system sets him apart and will allow the Jags' offense to reach new heights.

"Great quarterbacks that I've either played with, or we've watched in the NFL have all had that ability to make others better and really rise and bring the talent around him up," Pederson said. "He's one of those guys. He's not demanding or pounding his fists on the table, nothing like that. Just conversations you see with guys and how he's willing to learn, he doesn't have all the answers, but at the same time, they're working through things. Him and Calvin (Ridley), you see it all the time, they're working through things. Him and Evan (Engram), they're working through things. You can go right down the list. That's the leadership part that I'm encouraged with and the dialogue that he has. It just keeps getting stronger each week."

Ridley's addition provides excitement that the Jags' offense can take the next step in Pederson's second season. Questions remain about the blocking -- particularly early in the season -- and defense, but if Lawrence raises his game to that elite level, Jacksonville can overcome those problems.

The Colts must be eager for another top pick this year. Richardson is way too green / inconsistent to start right away. Going to be some real high moments and some real low ones this year.

 

As much as I like Minshew, he( or any QB) isn't getting this team to the promised land.

Might as well get him the experience right now.

 

And when you stop and think about, Richardson only started 13 games in Florida, so he is truly inexperienced and just 21 years old. I like the guy a lot, just hope he's not being thrown to the wolves too quickly or more damage than good may come from this.

Colts HC, Steichen said he's seen progression, but im confused with that statement based on him hardly playing yet. His showing in Buffalo was better, but in my opinion, not jaw dropping better. At least with the QB1 title, he will get more time with the 1's before it all gets real.

 

Probably because he didn’t earn the job but was just handed it.

 

Maybe sometimes you just know, a gut feeling and maybe they seen enough even tho it was a short sample.

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has earned the starting job, and head coach Shane Steichen says the decision to give Richardson the ball in Week One comes for the same reasons as the decision to pick him with the fourth overall draft.

Steichen says watching the unique blend of running ability and arm strength that Richardson possesses makes it obvious how special the rookie quarterback is.

“You see the upside on film, it just jumps off the tape,” Steichen said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “Holy smokes, there aren’t many guys that can do the things that he’s doing, so let’s roll,” Steichen said.

Steichen said everything the Colts have learned about Richardson since drafting him has matched what they were hoping to find.

“Starting in OTAS, getting him in here after the draft, his work habits, what he’s doing, the playmaking ability he brings,” Steichen said. “Great, high-character guy. The way he treats people, he’s a charismatic guy, he cares about people, great teammate, he wants to do everything right.”

Richardson doesn’t have much experience after starting only one season in college, but he’s done enough that Steichen has no doubts he’s found his franchise quarterback.

Mike Evans wants to know who the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback will be

The Buccaneers continue to have a competition for the starting quarterback job. Receiver Mike Evans wants that competition to end.

Via JoeBucsFan.com, Evans said Wednesday that, basically, it’s time for the Bucs to pick a horse and ride it.

“We want to know who the starter’s going to be, you know, soon,” Evans said after a joint practice with the Jets. “So we can just keep working and [the starting quarterback] can take control of the offense.”

Ira Kaufman of JoeBucsFan.com has reported that Baker Mayfield will win the job over Kyle Trask. Whoever it is, it’s time to start getting that player ready for Week One, at Minnesota, by giving him all of the practice reps with the first-team offense.

Will Levis left practice early, status for Saturday to be determined

Will Levis’ bid for the No. 2 quarterback job with the Titans would be helped by a strong performance in preseason games, but his chance of turning one in against the Vikings this weekend hit a snag on Thursday.

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters at a press conference that Levis had to leave practice early because of an undisclosed issue that required him to see members of the training staff. Vrabel said that it is to be determined if Levis is going to be able to play in the team’s second preseason contest.

Malik Willis entered camp as the No. 2 quarterback behind Ryan Tannehill and has remained in that spot on depth charts released by the team.

Willis started against the Bears last week and went 16-of-25 for 189 yards and an interception. Levis was 9-of-14 for 85 yards and an interception.

Texans HC DeMeco Ryans said C.J. Stroud will start Saturday’s preseason game against the Dolphins.

This marks the second-consecutive preseason start for Stroud, who has all but won the Texans’ starting quarterback job at this point. While it hasn’t been formally announced, it’s hard to deny what we’ve seen thus far. Stroud has handled the majority of the starting reps in camp, and most reports out of camp have been positive regarding the rookie. If all goes well, this could be the last time we see Stroud in-game until Week 1 against the Ravens.

 

Id never would have made it in the NFL if thats the stuff you hear in the huddle. If it were, Will, run the F'n ball, i could get that.

Commanders name Sam Howell starting quarterback

The football world has been operating under the assumption that Sam Howell will be the Commanders starting quarterback for quite a while and the team has finally made it official.

Head coach Ron Rivera was not willing to call Howell the team’s starter earlier this week, but he changed his tune on Friday morning. Rivera confirmed that Howell will be under center when the Commanders host the Cardinals in Week One of the regular season.

Rivera said that Howell met the challenge that the Commanders laid out for him to earn the job.

“We’ve talked about seeing the growth and improvement from OTAs and minicamp,” Rivera said, via JP Finlay of NBCSportsWashington.com. “Talked about going into training camp and continuing to grow and show us what he’s capable of. We’ve been very pleased with it.”

The Commanders have started a lot of quarterbacks in recent years without finding a lasting leader. They’re hoping Howell’s ascension puts an end to the revolving door at the team’s most important position.

Brock Purdy picks up where he left off in return to game action

Brock Purdy had not played since the NFC Championship Game in January when he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow.

He didn’t play long Saturday but long enough for the 49ers to know he’s still the same quarterback post-surgery.

The second-year player saw only nine snaps against the Broncos but led the team 68 yards to a game-opening field goal drive.

Purdy went 4-of-5 for 65 yards and a passer rating of 118.8. He took one sack and scrambled for an 8-yard gain.

He underwent surgery on his right elbow March 10 and has worked his way back since beginning a throwing program May 29.

Sam Darnold replaced Purdy on the 49ers’ second possession, and Trey Lance is expected to play the second half.

C.J. Stroud plays entire first half in second preseason game

After a shaky first outing against the Patriots, quarterback C.J. Stroud fared much better against the Dolphins in his second preseason game.

The Texans started their first drive on the Dolphins’ 7-yard line after Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa threw an interception. But Houston didn’t end up scoring.

Stroud looked like a rookie on Houston’s first possession, as he didn’t get the snap off in time on third-and-goal from the 1-yard line, resulting in a delay of game penalty. On third-and-goal from the 6, Stroud had pressure in his face as he threw incomplete to the flat. Then on fourth-and-goal, Stroud and tight end Dalton Schultz weren’t on the same page and the pass was well incomplete.

But Stroud recovered well to help lead the Texans to points on their second possession. He started the drive with a short swing pass to Nico Collins that gained 7 yards. Stroud followed that with a 14-yard pass to Collins, a 14-yard pass to Noah Brown, and an 11-yard pass to Robert Woods on third-and-7 to move the chains.

Stroud’s third possession ended in a quick three-and-out. On the fourth, while Stroud spun out of a potential sack with a free rusher, Brown couldn’t catch the quarterback’s on-target pass that was thrown moving to his left.

Playing the entire first half, Stroud finished 7-of-12 passing for 60 yards.

Tua Tagovailoa has “awesome” return to game action despite INT

Tua Tagovailoa played his first football game in 237 days. Preseason or not, it was meaningful for the Dolphins quarterback.

Tagovailoa missed the end of last season with the last of multiple concussions in 2022.

After considering retirement, Tagovailoa instead incorporated jiu-jitsu into his training regimen and strengthened his body.

“It was awesome,” Tagovailoa said of playing again, via Mark Inabinett of al.com. “You get all the feelings that you normally feel of getting back out there again – butterflies, anxious to get out there, all these thoughts going through your head. I thought it felt really good being able to go out there, call plays with the guys, the camaraderie in the huddle.

“Things didn’t go our way, adversity hit, and it was cool to see the guys respond.”

Tagovailoa’s 2022 season ended with an interception on Christmas night when Packers defensive back Rasul Douglas picked him with 1:29 remaining. He was diagnosed with a concussion the next day.

His preseason debut opened the same way: Tagovailoa’s first pass Saturday, intended for tight end Tyler Kroft, was intercepted by Texans linebacker Denzel Perryman.

“It was just a bad play,” Tagovailoa said. “That’s really all it was – just bad quarterback play. That’s not how you want to start out a drive any way you look at it.”

Perryman returned the pick 19 yards before Tagovailoa, of all people, made the tackle. It was a good sign that Tagovailoa was no worse for wear, but the Dolphins probably would have preferred their starter get out of harm’s way, especially in the preseason.

“As a quarterback, I understand the whole ‘OK, you threw an interception, try not to get hurt while you’re trying to make a tackle,’” Tagovailoa said. “But on top of throwing the interception, what’s even worse than that is the guy scoring when he intercepts the ball, so I think for me, I’m going to do the best that I can to make a play.”

Tagovailoa got the Dolphins in the end zone on their second possession, going 5-of-6 for 61 yards on a 93-yard drive. He then handed the keys to backup Skylar Thompson.

More importantly, Tagovailoa came out of the game just fine after taking some hits.

“It’s a physical sport. It’s tough,” Tagovailoa said. “I went out there and was expecting to get hit. I was expecting to go to the ground, all of that.”
