Report: Isiah Pacheco is expected to be cleared for contact in mid-August Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco said last month that he will “absolutely” be 100 percent in time to play in the season opener against the Lions and a report on Wednesday indicates that he’ll be given the green light for a full practice schedule weeks ahead of that game. Pacheco has been practicing in a non-contact jersey at training camp because of a torn labrum in his shoulder and a broken bone in his hand. James Palmer of NFL Media reports that Pacheco is expected to be cleared for contact by August 20. The Chiefs play their final preseason game is on August 26. Under the reported timeline, Pacheco could be available but the Chiefs might opt for making the regular season opener his first game action. Pacheco ran 170 times for 830 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season last year. The 2022 seventh-rounder added 37 carries for 197 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs. NBC
JJ not adding JJ to the Cowboys ring of honor is a F'n joke. JJ is an A'Hole 99.999% of the time. I do like some JJ's, but the Cowboys JJ's, not so much. I have spoken!
That was a hell of a pick, but he's gonna hurt himself with celebrations like that. The young are invincible until they find out they're not.
The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo believes there is no doubt the Steelers “will lean heavily on the ground game.” Kenny Pickett mentioned the need for balance on offense during camp and head coach Mike Tomlin talked about his desire to control the flow of the game via his rushing attack. Both men also noted a need for explosive plays, but it’s hard not to take their comments as a clear indication that the team has no desire to air the ball out and will instead rely on their tandem of Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. Harris has yet to top four yards per carry in an NFL season and Warren will top out as a high-usage backup at best, so things aren’t looking great for the Steelers’ odds of putting up points in droves. _____ _______________ Whatever works.
Ford Field has a waiting list for Lions season tickets for first time ever The Lions have played at Ford Field since 2002, and they’ve rarely given Detroit fans much to cheer for: In their time at their new stadium they’ve never won their division or won a playoff game. But this year, there’s a different vibe around the Lions. That’s why for the first time since moving into Ford Field, the Lions have had to create a waiting list for season tickets, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The Lions are the favorites to win the NFC North, which means they’re favored to host a playoff game, something they haven’t done since 1993, when they played at the Pontiac Silverdome. Season ticket holders get the first opportunity to buy playoff tickets, and the Lions’ first home playoff game in three decades looks like a realistic possibility this season. With a good season this year, the Lions may see that season ticket waiting list grow, and a fan base that’s been through a lot will see its optimism rewarded. NBC
Ravens HC John Harbaugh said he’s unsure of when J.K. Dobbins will return to the team. Harbaugh reportedly met with Dobbins earlier in the week to discuss his current situation with the team. The veteran running back was a surprise candidate for the PUP list to start training camp, but his absence appears to be more about his contract than an injury. Dobbins is reportedly at the team facilities but not practicing. Ravens beat reporter Sarah Ellison is one of several who believe Dobbins is “holding in” as he looks to get a new/better deal than the one he is currently on. As long as this continues, Dobbins’ situation will be one to monitor. It’s hard to imagine him not playing, but an extensive absence from practice could lead to a light workload early in the season.
Dobbins is nuts. He hasn’t done enough for this bs. If teams aren’t paying better RBs than him they are not going to pay him.
I get what you’re saying and I agree, however he has the 51st high contract on his last year of his rookie deal. 2 of the 3 seasons he’s had injury issues. He is yet another candidate for an incentive contract… just saying
Dan Campbell: Hit that ended Shane Zylstra’s season “shouldn’t happen” in training camp Lions tight end Shane Zylstra’s season ended before it began when he took a hit to the knee in training camp. Lions coach Dan Campbell isn’t happy about that. “First of all, feel awful for Zylstra,” Campbell said, via the Detroit News. “My gosh. He had the injury two years ago that man. That was a tough one. That was a tough injury he fought his way back from. And then you saw what he was able to do for us. He was a pivotal part of our success last year, once we started to turning the corner, and he just does everything right, man. He works, he’s a grinder, and then this one happens.” Zylstra’s injury happened when he took a low hit from cornerback Khalil Dorsey, and Campbell said that’s the kind of hit that needs to be avoided on the practice field. “Honestly, it shouldn’t happen,” Campbell said. “No, we’re not OK with that, and it’s been addressed. These things happen — the physicality of the game in pads — but that was preventable. It’s not what we do. And believe me, Khalil feels awful, too. We get that, but we got to take care of each other. You still have to be physical, we got to work each other, we got to compete, but we still got to take care of each other. We talked about it and we move on.” There’s no moving on for Zylstra, who was waived with an injury designation and will hope to make it back next year. PFT
BROWNS 21 - JETS 16 Zach Wilson's outing ends up being a cameo. In what could be a crucial season for Wilson's long-term development, the third-year quarterback didn't get a ton of playing time, ending his night after one quarter of action. Before he exited, Wilson launched a beautiful, 36-yard strike to Malik Taylor over the head of cornerback Thomas Graham, but that was essentially it for the former No. 2 overall pick before veteran Tim Boyle replaced him. It would've been nice to see Wilson get another drive or two, primarily because he only threw five passes. His first drive ended because he slipped on a scramble attempt that would have produced a first down, and his final possession lasted just three plays (and picked up a whole five yards) after the Jets recovered a Browns fumble in Cleveland territory. It was clear the Jets only wanted one quarter of action for Wilson in what is essentially an extra preseason game, but it left us wanting more from a quarterback who could benefit from a year spent behind Aaron Rodgers. Perhaps we'll see more of him in the weeks ahead. Cleveland might have a kicker problem. Cade York hasn't exactly given folks a reason to feel highly confident about his standing as the Browns' kicker of the future this year, and his first kick of the preseason didn't help. York trotted onto the field after Cleveland's initial drive stalled, and instead of converting the 49-yard attempt, he pushed it wide right. York was fine from there, converting all three extra-point attempts, but they weren't without a bit of worry. Cleveland lost a game last year (coincidentally against these same Jets) because York missed a late PAT, and he wasn't all that consistent in his rookie season. He'll need to be better when given additional opportunities this preseason in order to assuage concerns about his reliability -- and to avoid prompting the Browns to explore other options. Browns' backup quarterback situation is getting interesting. Cleveland chose to split the Hall of Fame Game in half, with Kellen Mond getting the first half, and fifth-round pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson replacing him for the final two quarters. Mond's first half had a few nice surprises, including a couple of connections with third-round pick Cedric Tillman (who showed plenty of promise in a game played largely against backups), but overall, it was underwhelming and justified why Mond has drifted into irrelevance. Thompson-Robinson, however, was anything but boring. The UCLA product entered the game and transformed the Browns from an offense that couldn't overcome its own mistakes, to one that relied on the quarterback to extend drives. He completed 3 of his 5 passes for 31 yards, gained another 30 with his legs, picked up seven first downs and even threw a key block on Demetric Felton's 16-yard touchdown run (in what was a beautiful example of former Bruins teamwork). Thompson-Robinson's impressive night didn't end there, either, as he ripped a rocket of a touchdown pass to Austin Watkins down the seam for a 22-yard score, giving the Browns a lead they wouldn't relinquish. If we're basing the final call between Mond and Thompson-Robinson solely on the Hall of Fame Game, the latter wins it by a wide margin. DTR brings juice and improvisational skills that Mond simply doesn't have, and he took the Browns from a sleepy, listless unit to one that marched down the field for two touchdowns with relative ease. We'll see if he can keep it up and earn a roster spot. It's preseason for everyone. As is typical of an early preseason contest, the first game of 2023 was, well, sloppy. Penalties were abundant (19 combined accepted penalties for 155 yards), pass catchers failed to live up to their title when catchable throws arrived, and even the stadium had an issue with its lighting, leading to a 15-minute delay at the start of the fourth quarter. Overall, though, it was great to welcome football back into our lives -- even if we had to wait a little longer than usual to complete the first game of the year. Let’s hope it only gets better from here. NFL.com
NEWS YOU CANT USE... During the game, the lights went out. After the game, the showers didn’t go on. Both the Browns and the Jets had no operating showers in their locker rooms after Thursday night’s Hall of Fame game. The teams have confirmed that, indeed, the showers were not working. During the game, the lights went out. As one source explained it to PFT, Browns players were told the shower issue was related to the electrical issue that took out the lighting. Some Browns washed up in the cold tubs.
