That goes against your 2024 cap.

The way I'm understanding this then is, we need to draft good, pick up players at a minimum(injury, breakout etc...)or it could cost us quite a lot in salary cap space. Or to keep a good amount of money if we want to go after a free agent from another team in a contract year. Quality over quantity to avoid salary cap issues.

That's an approach that I think more than one owner is going to take and it makes fiscal sense, but it definitely isn't the only method that I expect to watch play out.

Putting together the best possible roster while being mindful of the contact implications can have a lot of different approaches and I wouldn't be surprised to see a varied set of strategies in this league.

I can come up with at least a half a dozen ways to fail. ;)

Its going to be fun just to watch the different approaches and strategies. I know I could still stand to learn quite a bit and Im going to make mistakes, but the various ways to approach things is very cool/interesting. This process leaves us the ability to cover up mistakes and to build on the fly, but Im thinking it gets tougher to do that as we move into the future.

Im already running into injuries and potential holdouts, so one never knows at any given moment what to expect.

    Hey all,

Have some questions about trades and contracts. Sorry if I missed any details on this.

    1. If we trade a player with a 3yr contract does he stay at that contract length for the other team? Or if we trade a 3yr contract for a 1 yr contract, what happens to the 6 that we are suppose to have?

    2. Let's say I suck, and I trade my players with contracts for draft picks? Do I have to adjust my contracts? Or do I only have the contracts that I have left?

    3. If I trade for a player with a 1yr contract but I want him longer I can use a tag on him or extend that contract, which I can do to 2 players(I think)

    Any help is always appreciated.

I know if we trade players we still take a cap hit.

    Confused by the '6'?

Contracts travel with the players, so a 3 year deal would remain post-trade.

If you are asking whether or not you get to recoup the ability to set contracts (3 year and 2 year offseason mark ups), the answer would be, no.

You are free to what you like with tags and extensions, so if you trade for a player with a two year deal and decide to add years in the offseason, you are free to do so.

    Sorry, try to explain better.

If we trade a player with a 3yr contract and let's say get a player with a 2yr contract in return.

We then would only have 5 3yr contracts and 13 2yr contracts.

    Hope that was better

    lol

I have a couple beers in me, so bear with me if I ain't grasping the concept of what you're throwing out...

All contract lengths are already set, so whatever you trade for is exactly what you would get.

There is no ability to change the length of a contract or recoup the ability to add years to another player.

Does that track with what we are discussing?

Yes, still the same length for the acquiring team. Part of the strategy.
And the 6 you were allowed to start with would now only have 5 remaining. So you’d probably bake that into the trade price.

No adjustment allowed. Your remaining contracts would be what they are now. No free years for you.
You’d have to turn your draft picks and free agency splashes into longer contracts.

Yes. Your allowed off-season extensions and tag are to be used however you see fit. If you haven’t already used them up and want to trade for a guy in the last year of his deal, then extend. That’s fine.

@Campbell that very last line of mine; let’s say hypothetically the season is over. Could I trade for a guy who’s about to turn into a free agent (sort of qualifies at this point), and then extend? Or would that be cheating the system? (Maybe I’m forgetting a deadline)

Sounds like y’all are having some questions?

  14. Campbell Administrator Manager Commissioner

    Excellent question.

No. Once we hit the offseason, a player with an expired contract can only be extended or tagged by the team they are on, and to make this simple for owners - In the offseason, a player with an expired contract cannot be dealt.

Once the season is over, contracts immediately go into their next season.

Vikings are my favorite team, would love to see it, but that defense is not going to be very good. They may have to score 40 points a game.

Like the jags call, it could happen that offense is loaded also.

I didnt pay Tim to say that either... I wouldnt have enough money, lol.

@Silver&black - "Vikings are my favorite team" Nice to hear this. There is a Vikings thread on here, basically me and Badmann yak all year round about the Vikings, would love to have you hang out. (if you have any site navigational issues or questions, contact Tim or myself and we will help out). Any member of the site is very welcome on the Vikings threads, by the way... even Bears fans. :) Dont be a stranger.

Under Flores, in my opinion, the same group of guys from last year would have fared better with his new/aggressive scheme. I understand this year has different personnel, but being more aggressive and showing different maybe more complicated looking coverages, these Vikings should be better. My point is this - Cousins on his second season with KOC will be even better, the offense will/should be a top 10 outfit and if they get any defensive play or turn around on the points differential, these Vikings have great potential. They arnt Chiefs, Bills, Bengals kinda talented, but they will be better and could be contenders... its always based on luck, injuries and the sorts, but a few times we have seen Wild Card teams get into the Playoffs and beat down the regular season 'big dogs' (I always have high hopes going in).

Would love to! Jefferson might be my favorite player of all time and that's saying a lot, if you become my favorite player over earl campbell and Marshall Faulk.

The problem I see with vikings defense is going to be the coverage in secondary, Murphy is a decent CB, but not great and I'm not sure who 2nd CB will be? The slot guy is that kid who did pretty good at end of last year, his name escapes me. Love Smith but he is 34 and Bynum can help with coverage, he's not bad.

Run defense should be ok along with the pass rush, nothing great but decent. Hoping asamoah becomes a star.

    Hope your right with Flores

But that offense will be sick
