Think they want to take a longer look at Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris with the pads on before they decide whether they want to spend on a more expensive #2.

Gene Upshaw's death was a disaster for the players. DeMo was terrible and set the union back. Now that he's finally gone, Lloyd Howell has a lot of work to do just to get the union's priorities back in order.

Colts agree to sign Al-Quadin Muhammad

    upload_2023-7-21_13-33-24.png

Defensive lineman Al-Quadin Muhammad was set to visit with the Jets on Friday, but there won’t be any reason to look for Muhammad on the AFC East team’s defense this season.

Muhammad’s agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey said their client has agreed to a one-year deal with the Colts. No other terms were disclosed.

It’s a return to Indianapolis for Muhammad as he played 64 games for the team between 2018 and 2021. That run came under the team’s previous coaching staff, so the familiar faces will be limited to the roster in Muhammad’s second tour with the Colts.

Muhammad spent last season with the Bears and had 29 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble in 16 appearances.

Report: Cole Beasley agrees to terms with Giants

    upload_2023-7-21_15-18-40.png

The Giants are signing receiver Cole Beasley, Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports.

That reunites Beasley with Brian Daboll, his former offensive coordinator with the Bills, and gives Daniel Jones another veteran receiver.

Beasley, 34, said in May he would retire if he wasn’t on a team in time for training camp.

He made it just in the nick of time.

He joined the Buccaneers last September but lasted less than a month and announced he was retiring. In December, though, he re-signed with the Bills.

Beasley played four regular-season games between the two teams and two more for the Bills in the postseason. He caught five passes for 68 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs.

In 11 seasons, including seven with the Cowboys, Beasley has totaled 556 receptions for 5,744 yards and 44 touchdowns.

The Browns placed veteran receiver Marquise Goodwin on the non-football illness list Friday, and now we know why.

Blood clots in his lungs and legs will force Goodwin to miss the start of training camp, the team announced. Goodwin, who is entering his 10th season, began experiencing discomfort in his legs and complained of shortness of breath during organized team activities this spring.

    A check-up revealed the clots.

“It was really alarming at first because I’ve experienced injury throughout my career, but it’s never been anything like this that could turn into something detrimental if it’s not taken care of,” Goodwin said, via Anthony Poisal of the team website. “It was frightening at first, but now I’m at ease with it. I’ve prayed and just given it over to God. It’s out of my control, and the only thing I can control is my effort and attitude and how I approach each day moving forward.”

Goodwin, who signed with the Browns as a free agent this offseason, is uncertain when he can return to football activities. He plans to participate in meetings during training camp.

“It’s one of those things that is totally out of my control, out of the doctor’s control and out of the trainer’s control,” Goodwin said. “It’s really an unfortunate deal we have to deal with, but we need to deal with it in the proper fashion. The Browns are doing everything in their power to support me through it by allowing me to be around the team, on the field and in meetings. I’m grateful for that, and hopefully this thing gets back under control, and I can feel my body and what I need to feel so I can help this team make this run.”

Goodwin has appeared in 102 career games and has totaled 187 receptions for 3,023 yards and 18 touchdowns. He entered the NFL as a third-round pick of the Bills in 2013 and also has played for the 49ers, Bears and Seahawks.

I watched some Patriots games Last year. I see an average back that gets 1 or 2 good runs a game to help his average look exceptional. He can’t carry that offense. He needs to be a part of a committee.

1,000 yard backs are going to be the norm with 17 games. It used to be a handful were over 1,000, another handfuls was just shy, another handful was about 100 yards away… now most in those categories are going to be over 1,000… regardless, he’s a bull, without the skill set of an earl campbell. He’s going to wear down quickly I’m his career, maybe one more good season unless they get a better back to committee with him.

This will be interesting to look back on in 5 years.

I'm not as confident this will be the case. The combination of more than one primary runner and the ability to get more vertical, horizontal and under with the passing game may make combined 1200 to 1400 seasons more the norm.

You could have the lead dog with 8 to 9 and the spell back at 4 to 6.

I'm not saying I disagree entirely, just that I haven't gotten deep enough in the weeds on it to have conviction in the extra game translating to more rushers cracking the grand.

That’s fair, too early to say more will break the barrier.. let me then say, Steven’s 1,040 yard season wasn’t particularly special. In my opinion, he has a limited skill set and won’t leave his mark on the NFL history books. We will see, people are wrong all the time, I just don’t see something g that makes me go “oooh did you see that?”

I liked him coming out because of reliability in an all-around game, but he does lack game breaking athleticism.

He reminds me a bit of the running back that the Ravens had that was originally a full back before he became a primary runner (the name is eluding me at the moment).
