Giants offered Saquon Barkley $13 million per year; Barkley wanted $16 million

The Giants and running back Saquon Barkley have fewer than five days left to do a long-term deal. While it’s unclear whether they’ll get one finalized by Monday at 4:00 p.m. ET, an effort was made to make it happen before application of the franchise tag.

Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the Giants extended an offer to Barkley worth $13 million per year, including $26 million over the first two years. The offer was made before the deadline for applying the franchise tag, with the express message from the team that, if the tag were applied to Barkley, the offer would be pulled. Barkley was looking for Christian McCaffrey money, we’re told; that’s roughly $16 million per year.

The Giants had wanted to sign Barkley to a multi-year deal and to apply the franchise tag to quarterback Daniel Jones. They instead signed Jones and tagged Barkley — and they have not to date been willing to put the $13 million per year offer back on the table for Barkley.

Barkley deserves more than the $10.1 million he’s due to make this year under the franchise tender, but deserve doesn’t matter. The rules allowed the Giants to squat on Barkley’s rights for $10.1 million in 2023, and to keep him in 2024 for a 20-percent raise over his 2023 salary.

That’s only $22.22 million over two years.

Barkley is making noise currently about holding out into the regular season because he needs to muster any/some leverage before Monday. After Monday, nothing he says or does can get him a long-term deal in 2023. At that point, the question becomes whether the Giants will offer more than the tag on a one-year deal, and/or whether the Giants will agree not to tag him again in 2024.

Kyler Murray’s goal is to be back for the season opener

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray underwent surgery Jan. 3 to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. So, realistically, Murray faces long odds to be ready for the start of the season.

That isn’t stopping him from trying.

The season premiere of Cardinals Flight Plan is scheduled to air Thursday night on the Cardinals’ YouTube channel, and in pre-released audio of the episode, Murray spoke about his goal to hurry up and get back.

“When you look further down the line, it seems like we’ve got a long way to go. Ideally, I want to be back by Week 1 ,” Murray said in the episode, via Tyler Drake of arizonasports.com. “That’s the goal. At the end of the day, that’s the goal, but I can’t really look that far ahead. Got to take it one day at a time.”

It is Murray’s first interview since his injury Dec. 12 in a game against the Patriots.

“It’s got to be a positive. There’s really no option for it to be a negative,” Murray said of his rehab. “I feel like you get your little grace period as soon as it happens. Let the feelings take over but after that, [expletive], we’ve got to go. Life doesn’t stop; the job doesn’t stop. My ultimate goal is to get better and obviously win Super Bowls. That’s my goal.”

Murray completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 2,368 yards and 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season. He also ran for 418 yards and three scores in his 11 starts.

Colt McCoy is expected to start as long as Murray is out with David Blough, Jeff Driskel and 2023 fifth-round draft pick Clayton Tune behind him.

Report: Brock Purdy remains on target for season opener

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy traveled to Jacksonville following the team’s offseason program. He has spent time there rehabbing with private quarterbacks coach Will Hewlett and sports performance expert Tom Gormely.

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area provided an update Thursday during an appearance on KNBR.

Maiocco said Purdy ‘s rehab is on schedule, and he is on track to start the season opener, having experienced no setbacks. The team hopes that Purdy can return at some point late in training camp.

Purdy underwent surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow on March 10. He was given a six-month recovery timeline, with a slow buildup.

The 49ers have Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in 2021, and free agent signee Sam Darnold, a former first-round pick, standing by in case.

Purdy earned the starting job last season after injuries to Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. He completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in seven games during the regular season.

Purdy completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 569 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in three playoff games, injuring his elbow early in the NFC Championship Game loss to the Eagles.

He will still get his opportunity, I would think. Be kind of silly not to look at him closely. IF Purdy gets healthy before game 1, I would suspect he may not be the starter based on not having training camp or pre-season under his belt, so there are still a few variables in play with Darnold and Lance there to kick things off. Just speculation on my part tho, as obviously there is a lot of things that need to be seen.

 

And if i read more carefully it looks like they are already considering him being back in time for all the pre-game 1 hoopla, so if all goes as it looks now, Purdy is settin' purdy.

 

Giants guard Mark Glowinski sees 'better season' ahead for Daniel Jones now that QB can 'have fun and kick (expletive)'



Mark Glowinski has just one season of experience protecting Daniel Jones.

Nonetheless, the offensive lineman knows well enough that Jones has had his struggles finding consistency on the field and around him.

After Jones' finest season so far in 2022, Glowinski foresees the brightest days are still yet to come for the New York Giants quarterback.

"I think it's going to be even a better season now that he has … that little bit of sense of relief in the sense that he doesn't have to prove (anything) to anybody and now he can just go out there and have fun and kick a--," Glowinski said on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast. "And I think that's what was showing last year."

Glowinski started 16 games for New York a season ago -- his first for the Giants after three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks and four as part of a then-stellar Indianapolis Colts front. He knows full well Jones' history, though. It's one in which the 2019 NFL Draft's No. 6 overall pick has played for three head coaches and four offensive coordinators in four seasons.

The hiring of Brian Daboll ahead of the 2022 campaign has been a boon thus far for Danny Dimes, who posted career bests across the board last season in myriad categories: 317 completions, 472 attempts, 67.2 completion percentage, 3,205 yards, five interceptions, NFL-leading 1.1 interception percentage, 708 rushing yards, seven rushing touchdowns.

For as solid a season as it was for Jones, it wasn't all puppies and rainbows from the jump. In his first four games, he never topped 200 yards passing and threw just three total TDs.

From Glowinski's perspective, Jones was pressing before he eventually settled in and got comfortable.

"He did a great job, especially coming off of the, you know, past couple of years where he's had a different coach," Glowinski said. "And even with last year, he had a new coach. So he is, you can tell early on in the season, that he had a little bit of tightness in him, where he wanted to make sure he was being right all the time. And I think, you know, for something simple for me, I would just tell him to try to stay loose and have as much fun out there. And I felt like every game that we were winning, he was opening up a little bit more and you would see a little bit more fire in him and more and more and that swagger was coming out. And there was a lot of fun that was being played last season."

Last season saw the Giants sneak up on people. Big Blue quenched a playoff drought that extended back to 2016 and then won its first postseason game since 2011.

They're not going to be able to surprise any many opponents in 2023, and Jones' four-year, $160 million extension is going to have fans in Gotham expecting him to be better in Year 2 under Daboll. Glowinski believes his quarterback will be.

Trevor Lawrence showed unprecedented improvement from Year 1 to Year 2

Has any quarterback ever benefited from a coaching change more than Trevor Lawrence, who went from Urban Meyer in his first season to Doug Pederson in his second?

Statistically, there’s a case to be made that Lawrence’s improvement was unlike any other player’s in NFL history.

Via NFL Research, Lawrence’s improvement from a passer rating of 71.9 in 2021 to 95.2 in 2022 is the largest increase in NFL history for any quarterback who threw at least 400 passes in each of his first two seasons.

The switch from Meyer to Pederson as the Jaguars’ head coach certainly isn’t the only reason for Lawrence’s improvement, but it’s probably the biggest reason. Meyer clearly wasn’t ready to be an NFL head coach after a long and successful college coaching career. Pederson had already proven he had a knack for getting the most out of quarterbacks, coaching Carson Wentz to a regular season in which he was an MVP candidate, and then coaching Nick Foles to a Super Bowl MVP after Wentz went down.

The unprecedented improvement Lawrence showed is a great sign for the Jaguars’ future, and a great indication of what kind of coach Pederson is.

In my Money League I have 1st overall pick and will take McCaffery (49 ers) and in my 2nd pick I will try and get a QB/WR Tandem (24th-25th) depending on who is available.........if Lawrence is there I will take him because he is ready to Rock and Roll.

I'm really a Pederson fan and have been for a while. He was a good back up when he was in GB and I feel like his football acumen is through the roof. I would've loved him as an OC in Pittsburgh.

Ive read that Tomlin likes him (Canada), says he's confident in him... Tomlin gets what he wants for the moment. This season is probably going to be the season that makes or breaks the Steelers coaching staff, in my opinion, as the Steelers have the weapons and Canada has had time with Picket and company.

Scapegoat thats why Canada is still there when they miss the playoffs or lose in the first round again matt is the sacraficial lamb that will let Tomlin continue on as the head coach of the Steelers.
