Its weird and frustrating, I dont know why exactly there is a delay in key player/positions... maybe Kwesi is playing hardball? Lots of unanswered question on the Cook front too. I dont like this stuff, but it is June 4th, maybe this is normal?

Someone passing by this thread might shed some light. Me and Baddman would appreciate it.

Welp, I'm gonna have to start getting well versed on Vikings news. We're officially a Minnesota family, now. It's beautiful up here. Looking forward to talking Vikings football as the year goes on, if you'll have me.

If I had to guess, the GM isn't in a rush to get this stuff done. Still early in the off-season. Let's check in closer to camps. No way they don't get key guys like Jefferson locked down long term.

    Hello, d!

Your always welcome... thats a fact. Glad to hear your moved in, I bet it is a beautiful state, its one place i havnt been, but ive seen plenty of pics, vids and virtual tours, really nice country, so congrats!

I think your right on the money, its early, Kwesi isnt in a rush, just me and the impatient. One thing tho that is weird is the delay on Cook, thats a mystery to me. On the other hand Im sure JJ and Hunter will get paid. The thing about Jefferson is how much he gets paid, because he is arguably the best WR on the Earth at the moment, so he could set a bar way high... deservingly, I might add.

Good luck with the Bears also, Im hearing nothing about the North but how the Lions are going to take it... I guess playing the Bears, Vikings and those cheezies twice a year doesnt mean squat. Im sure the Bears and Vikings just might have something to say about all that when all is said and done. It is a good Division and getting stronger.

Anyway, welcome and enjoy the 'heartland'.

PS - I guess since the June 1st date has passed, the Vikings can take their sweet time on the Cook situation in leu of finding the best trade partners. I need to chill... I do have all Summer, I suppose.

Running backs just don't have the market you'd wish they did. The longer he waits, the more likely he is to find a team desperate because their guy went down with injury, etc. At least, that's what I'd guess at this point.

I appreciate the welcome, y'all. We're just getting settled in here, but so far so good. Baddman, I'll let you know when we finally explore somewhere past our neighborhood - lots of places we're excited to see!

I liked this take by, Mike Florio of PFT...

Are Vikings torn on whether to move on from Dalvin Cook?

Throughout the 2023 offseason, the writing has been on the wall regarding the eventual trade or release of running back Dalvin Cook. Last week, there were indications that, once June 1 came and went, Cook could (would) be traded.

But then he wasn’t traded. Or released.

So what happened? It’s possible that some in the organization are asking questions about whether the analytics-driven desire to move on from Dalvin Cook makes good football sense. It’s also possible that the anti-Dalvin crowd senses that they might lose this one, and that they have taken their position to one of the leading newspapers that cover the Vikings.

That was my first thought when reading the Sunday column from Jim Souhan of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The popular take among fans is to keep Cook around. Souhan opted for the opposite narrative, making the case for cutting (or trading) Cook.

Souhan compared the team to the Rams in the early years of Sean McVay’s tenure, when running back Todd Gurley was the centerpiece of the offense. The Rams pivoted from Gurley to the passing game, ultimately building a passing attack built around a high-end receiver.

“He won the Super Bowl . . . with an inexpensive running back rotation, and a three-receiver set that highlighted a superstar, Cooper Kupp,” Souhan writes.

Without Cook, that’s what the Vikings will be doing, redirecting cap dollars to other positions.

Souhan argues that Cook has begun to show signs of wear. Really? He has been playing with one shoulder, and he finally has gotten the injured one fixed. He should be even better this year, barring any new injuries.

The Rams/McVay comparison doesn’t really hold water. First, the Rams overpaid Gurley, before his knee was shot. Second, the Rams eventually upgraded from a middle-of-the-road quarterback to a franchise-caliber passer who pushed the team over the top. Third, the Vikings don’t have Aaron Donald, the true MVP of L.A.’s Super Bowl win.

In many respects, the Cook conundrum becomes a water’s edge issue for analytics. The numbers and the formulas can easily support moving on from Cook. But it’s one thing to study charts. It’s another thing to watch games.

Cook is a difference maker. A home-run hitter. A leader in the locker room. A guy whose absence will be missed, and not simply because of yards per carry or whatever metrics would support moving on.

To the extent that the Vikings view Cook as a luxury they don’t need to afford because they aren’t true contenders this year, baloney. Things can change dramatically once the season gets going. The Eagles could regress. The 49ers could be injury-riddled. The Lions might not be able to carry the mantle of contender.

A door could open for the Vikings to be better than they were last year, given that the Kevin O’Connell offense is entering year two and the defense can’t be worse than it was last season.

Why surrender the ability to contend at a high level over the economic realities of the running back position? With the contractual right to convert most of Cook’s salary to a guaranteed payment, millions in cap dollars could be pushed to future years — and the Vikings could keep Cook around for one more season.

With no ability to upgrade in the short term to a short-list franchise quarterback, why wouldn’t the Vikings want to keep a guy who played a major role in multiple Minnesota wins last year?

One of the most important things about using analytics is knowing when to ignore them. For the 2023 Vikings, who are more likely to thread the needle to an unexpected Super Bowl appearance with Cook than without him, this is one situation where qualitative needs to trump quantitative.

Unless the team truly is committed to the one-and-done, just-good-enough purple purgatory in which it has resided for most of the last 40 years.

They just might be waiting for a team desperate enough to trade for Ðalvin Cook and be careful of White Castle it's not cheap anymore it's good just not cheap like it once was,the Vikings Defense will be better just be descent I want to see in.the pre-season Ty Chandler and this DeWayne McBride what kind of game does he have

In my opinion, the Vikings better not be in a rebuild kinda attitude or mode, period. The North is theirs to lose. The offense is loaded and will be even better and the defense will be improved... even if slightly, its going to be a better season than last for the defense. Mekhi Blackmon is going to vastly improve the secondary and the new attitude/accountability/scheme should bring better coverage under BFlo's tutelage.

Offensively, Cousins is way better than most will admit, JJ just might smash 2000, Addison and Hockenson are grade A weapons and never count out KJ. Whoever runs the ball will have a decent line in front of them. Vikings offense has the potential to be top10.

If your in it this season to win the North and go all in on a SB appearance, why in hell would you try to can a Cook? He's a workhorse that is needed.

I say, forget the 'analytics' in this case and look at what they did last year and the potential they have this year... I seriously believe they are even better now than last year by a mile. Go all in now and quit worrying about the future, their future is now or they will blow another shot at being SB potentials.

Chandler, Mcbride and dont forget, Nwangwu, he's a burner to that can possibly contribute, not just a ST's kinda guy. Vikings have backs, but not maybe the smashmouth 3 yard automatic guy they need, but they aint short on legs.

Analytics is just stats and data driven strategies, bases on accumulative information stored in brainiacs heads and computers... making decisions based on past data in certain circumstances instead of just flat out winging it or going with what works or has worked in the past.

Its not all bad, in my opinion, its just too much depended on in some cases and especially in Cooks case, his future, stats, contractual demands and all that crap is being mulled over and sifted through by these so called PC carrying brainiacs, instead of just looking at what you already know from the last few seasons and seen with your own two eyes... too me its simply over-thinking everything.

That's what I thought also to much leaning on the analytics you should be able if your the GM and the HC to tell what kind of team you have....it can be it seems it can be very helpful or it just destroy your team IMO
