I’m just going to point out how amused I am the Packers took a wide receiver and the Bengals took a tight end in the first round. According to the Internet, neither will ever happen
JSN is the only one I’d want the Packers to take at 15, and I think he’s a perfect fit for that offense.
According to the internet? Geoff Hobson had it as one of his mocks, and Bengals ESPN contributor just wrote a story about it
In fact, Charles McDonald from Yahoo Sports and Rhett Lewis of NFL.com both have Bengals taking a TE in their mocks. Bengals have Irv Jr. and that is it at TE, at least that wasn't a practice squad wash, So TE is a need for the Bengals. They are familiar with the ND football success of TEs, because when Eifert was healthy, he was one of the best in the league. Mayers is no different in potential and will fit in a pass heavy offense with Burrow
Well once upon a time there was a rumor the Cowboys were going to take an OL in the 1st, and many pundits were happy to point out they had never done it in the last 16 years or whatever. So of course they won’t. This was right before they drafted Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, and Travis Frederick in the next few years. All 1st round. With the Packers it’s much the same story. Recently they’ve grabbed Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams, Christian Watson all 2nd round. So they are using recent trends. Bengals it’s more that the current offense doesn’t put a high priority on TE. Combined with the assumption they might continue to prioritize the OL. Or needs elsewhere. But considering the depth chart, obviously TE will be looked at at some point this draft.
Darnell Washington is better. He played for Georgia where the passing game isn’t very relevant. He can block like an online man and has speed like a WR with pretty good hands. But Georgia didn’t throw the ball much so his stats will make teams look over him. His score at the combine was the highest for a TE since 1987
OL is a priority but I can get value at round 2 or 3, they have had better success in mid to late rounds with OL than first round. Irv Jr. only went to the Bengals for one reason Joey B. Joe wants more weapons and thinks the talent they have on the line is good enough, because he wasn't screaming this offseason about revamping the entire line. Just as DB will be addressed in the middle rounds as well.
Bresee would have been a good fit for Tennessee, but the Titans were/are short of picks and long on team needs. Trading up really isn't feasible for them.
Tennessee has #41. If you haven't been able to make your trade before then and your guy is still on the board, I'm your huckleberry.
He is a better blocking guy 100% but he is still a massive wild card due to his inexperience outside the line because he didn't have to. I think teams will and as I said, outside of one starter and a couple practice squad guys, Bengals depth at TE is non-existent
Colts willing to trade back. You’ve got about 20 minutes to get at me. Waiting to hear back from @Underdog too
Board is up to date. I'm on a conference call so I'm online but not entirely here. (As if I'm ever entirely here.)
I think if the option of Bengals trading out of the first into early second, he could be the guy they pull the trigger on as well.
This hits it very well. He CAN be an all around weapon, but he doesn't have much experience as the big threat because UGA has an even better TE weapon taking that role. But if nothing else, he's a freaking steamroller with good hands, so there's a lot of upside potential and a high floor.
As for Jonah Williams, he is the worst of the Bengals line, and no one will eat his salary, and the Bengals are too cheap to supplement any of it to get a deal done. He needs to perform to get the right to request a trade and he hasn't, so I don't think the Bengals will have the overwhelming need everyone thinks. Jonah knows he can sit out or play, he sits out, he gets a lot less money next year, he plays and tanks, he gets a lot less money, he has no option but to play hard for hopefully a mid-season exit.
