They have about a 3 year window until they have to pay the piper. That is the window they bought to win a Super Bowl… then the suck for 3 years and start over. This isn’t a dynasty plan, it’s a small window to win, then start over completely.
Mike Effin’ White will be moving to F-L-A under his new deal with the Dolphins. And he can double his money with an incentive package covering both seasons of his two-year deal. Per a source with knowledge of the contract, White get a signing bonus of $3.42 million in 2023 and a fully-guaranteed base salary of $1.08 million. Next year, the non-guaranteed base salary is $3.5 million, for a two-year package of $8 million. The contract also includes up to $4 million per year in incentives, based on factors such as playing time and team achievements, and playing time and playoff incentives. The specifics haven’t been disclosed, yet. So if the Dolphins need White to play over the next two years, White could boost his compensation, perhaps significantly. PFT ____________ ______________________ Just thought Id add Mike Whites deal also. Some backups are going to get game action because of injuries, obviously, but they will do the work of the 'overpaid' starters for peanuts in comparison.
Commanders were reported to be attempting to resign, Heinicke, but this happened... Taylor Heinicke is heading to Atlanta. Heinicke has agreed to sign with the Falcons, according to NFL Media. He’ll likely compete with Desmond Ridder for the starting quarterback job. Heinicke, who turns 30 tomorrow, has started 25 games in his NFL career, including nine for the Commanders last season, when he replaced Carson Wentz and played better than Wentz, getting the Commanders into playoff contention before they ultimately fell short. Heinicke also started a playoff game for Washington after the 2020 season. The Commanders have moved on from Heinicke and Wentz and are currently featuring Sam Howell atop their depth chart, although they still may sign a veteran to compete with Howell. @Torgo What do you think?
The Giants sort of didn't have any other real option and Jones knew it. I think I mentioned this before but allegedly the Giants and Jones old representation had a loose deal in place that was $35 APY. Jones changed his agent and when Athletes Firsts came in they made it clear Jones wouldn't sign a contract that wasn't $40 APY or more. Apparently the Giants front office had no idea this was coming and were surprised when they thought they had a framework in place and Jones came back asking for 5 million more per season. Now if you have ever heard me talk about Daniel Jones you know I don't think he's all that good. I don't think he's *bad* but I think a TON of his success this year (And the sad fact is we are calling this season a success for him) is simply because the system around him changed and stopped asking him to do the things a franchise QB is expected to do. Daboll made "run away" an early read in his progression on most plays. He only asked him to play half the field most of the time. He really hasn't gotten much more sophisticated in the post snap reads of the defense. Jones actually played better as well... but the offense is making things as easy as possible for Jones to boot. I know a lot of Giants fans think if you get him a WR1 he will suddenly be a franchise QB. But QB's can elevate weapons - weapons improve results but they don't actually elevate QB play. But QB contracts are crazy. When Jones was coming out I felt like he had a ceiling in the Kirk Cousins / Ryan Tannehill range. (I really don't like Cousins. Not because he's bad because I don't think he is but because he has always costs the Vikings way more salary cap then his talent can overcome) I didn't really want to use number 6 overall on a QB prospect that I didn't think had a chance of being a top QB. So when I saw the numbers on the contract I hated the idea of Jones getting 40 APY but I also knew the structure was going to be WAY more important than the initial numbers. I still wonder who exactly the Giants were negotiating against that was going to give Jones 40 million APY... But the deal is actually a 2 year deal. So if he underperforms next season they can still easily move on - which is important to me. I think Schoen and Daboll sat down and said "we are not going to do better than DJ next season" and figured out how to make it work and still give themselves some cap flexibility. But to be clear they are dating... this isn't a marriage and a long term contract for Jones. He basically has another prove it deal here...
Details of Ravens’ contract offer to Lamar Jackson revealed The Baltimore Ravens may not be willing to give Lamar Jackson a fully guaranteed contract, but it sounds like one offer they made to the star quarterback was well above market value. It has been widely reported that Jackson wants something similar to the five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract Deshaun Watson signed with the Cleveland Browns last year. That deal is very much an outlier. Several star quarterbacks have signed new contracts since, and none of them were fully guaranteed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on his podcast this week that the Ravens offered Jackson a contract that included more guaranteed money than what Kyler Murray got from the Arizona Cardinals and Russell Wilson got from the Denver Broncos. “Lamar Jackson was offered a deal — that he turned down — that included, at the time it was offered, $133 million due at signing — $133 million guaranteed. The contract also had injury guarantees that brought the total guarantees up to $175 million,” Schefter said. “And it then had a springing guarantee that could have brought the value of the contract, the guaranteed money in the contract, to $200 million guaranteed. Those guarantees were way more than Kyler Murray got from Arizona and way more than Russell Wilson got from the Denver Broncos. Yes, those were the actual numbers and that was the situation.” The additional $25 million of what Schefter called a “springing guarantee” would have kicked in if Jackson remained on Baltimore’s roster on the fifth day of the 2026 league year, so the Ravens were not necessarily on the hook for that. For comparison, the extension Wilson signed after he was traded to the Broncos includes $124 million fully guaranteed at signing, which is the true guarantee. Murray got $104 million fully guaranteed at signing. If Schefter’s figures are accurate, it sounds like the Ravens made a good-faith offer to Jackson. The issue has been that the former MVP, who does not have an agent, won’t accept that Watson’s contract with the Browns is an outlier. YARDBARKER
I'm waiting to hear the terms of the contract. Tom Pelissero mentioned in one report that the Falcons had named Desmond Ridder as the starter. I haven't seen that as far as 2023 goes - they went out of their way to avoid naming any starters at any position. So I'm inclined to agree that Heinicke will have a chance to compete for the starting role. With that in mind, I'm not so crazy about it if it's a larger contract. He's not likely to be a long term answer at QB, so if it's significant cap space the money likely would have been better spent elsewhere. But if the contract is reasonable, he'll do just fine. He went 5-3-1 for Washington last year. In both of the last two seasons, one out of eight of his completions have been 20+ yards. He only threw 6 picks in 9 games last year (vs 12 touchdowns). He can spread the ball in the right system, and Atlanta is going to be big on getting the ball to TEs and RBs as well as WRs. He's not a running quarterback, but he does have some mobility. The team seems to think he's the right guy as far as system fit. He's getting a great 30th birthday present. His birthday is tomorrow, the start of the league year. The biggest contract of his career becomes official, and he's also coming home. He went to high school less than 30 minutes away from the Falcons team complex.
Panthers plan to sign Andy Dalton The Panthers have identified the veteran mentor they want for the quarterback they will draft next month. Andy Dalton and the Panthers are close to an agreement on a two-year contract, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Dalton obviously is not a long-term answer in Carolina, where a rookie quarterback is certain to arrive after the Panthers traded up to the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. But if that rookie isn’t ready to start in Week One, Dalton could open the season as the starter. If the rookie is ready, Dalton will be the backup who functions like another quarterbacks coach. The 35-year-old Dalton played for the Saints, Bears and Cowboys the last three seasons after playing his first nine NFL seasons with the Bengals. Last year in New Orleans he started 14 games, and had a career-high 66.7 percent completion rate, with 18 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. PFT
I would have been more inclined to let him test the open market and have it set the price over letting him attempt to control negotiations. I believe the Giants have put themselves into an untenable position that will ultimately end with another rebuild, unless Daboll survives by changing out passers within the next 2 seasons.
I honestly wish the Jets would tell Rodgers where to go. This is the most ridiculous thing he's doing that I know of. I dont understand why he is calling all the shots as if the Jets were puppets on a string and I dont understand the Jets allowing this to happen.
Ballard and Irsay are both nuts. Colts freed up $17,205,882 of cap space and take a $18 million dead cap hit, but still fork over $12M. Ballard was quoted as saying he thought Ryan was the QB for 2 seasons and Irsay thought/said 3 0r 4 seasons.
The terms aren't too bad. It's kind of like the way Mariota's contract was set up. He actually gets paid $7 million this year, with $2 million of the cap hit pushed to next year ($4 million signing bonus prorated over 2 years). He would make another $7 million next year if he's still around. Bargain if he ends up starting. But even if they don't keep him for 2024, it's a $5 million cap hit this year and $2 million dead money next year. Not terrible for a backup with 1.5 seasons' worth of starting experience. Best guess is the team also drafts a mid/late round QB to groom as a backup.
And suddenly the Falcons are actually looking like the smart ones in the room (a rare happening) for getting a third rounder for him and then drafting his replacement in the third round.
Tomorrow, Rodgers will appear on Pat McAfee’s show at 1:00 p.m. ET. 3 hours before the League start of the season. I hope Pat has the nadz to get down and ask serious questions and I hope (probably in vane) Rodgers spills the beans.
Surely the whole reason he is going on is to spill the beans. It's Rodgers m.o. basically this is his lebron moment instead of announcing he is headed to south Beach he will say he is taking his talent to Broadway. I can't stand Rodgers because he isn't a team guy I hope that Mahomes humbles him multiple times.
Too me its a self-centered, conceded, arrogant move by Rodgers. He's a bigger diva than all the WR's combined, including Stefon Diggs and thats not easy!
I don’t think he is going to be able to talk about it today either. He isn’t a free agent.. the Packers still have to trade him and they have publicly stated they can wait until the draft if they don’t get the e compensation they are looking for. now, that being said, the Jets have made moves that would indicate they have already met their compensation demands and are simply waiting for the go ahead from Rodgers… we don’t know that for sure though.
Not necessarily. I mean, that's what everyone keeps hoping, but he's on the show every week. So far, it's just been typical Rodgers, loving the spotlight, but not really saying shit.
