Who'da thunk he's getting a bigger pay-day than Rodgers... thats just nuts. He played better, but i was really surprised when i seen the contract. Maybe, Daniel Jones signs for $55M, lol.
Looking at Carr's contract in more detail... mad props to Tim Younger, his agent. Carr will actually be making less this year and next year than he would have made under his Raiders extension. But Younger got Carr some great guarantees plus the no-trade clause. He's already in for $30 million fully guaranteed this year and $30 million fully guaranteed next year. In 2024, $10 million of his 2025 money (a roster bonus) becomes fully guaranteed. He also has a $30 million base in 2025 that is already guaranteed for injury (along with the roster bonus) and will become fully guaranteed in 2025, if the Saints keep him. 2026 is not guaranteed and is basically there just to push out $12.125 million of cap space. It's really a 3-year, $100 million deal. 2025 is the year that hangs in the balance. If they keep him, his 2025 cap figure would be $42.125 million. If they drop him, the dead money would be $24.25 million. Keeping him for that season would only cost $18 million in 2025 and an extra $12.125 million in 2026. (If they kept him for 2026, his cap cost jumps to $62.125 million. Probably not happening, but kudos to Loomis for doing a legit 2026 contract year and not one or two of those auto-void years.)
Surprisingly to me, Its been quiet on the Jimmy G front. Seems Carr and Rodgers are hogging all the attention, but quietly lurking in the background is Jimmy G. I wonder why no one is throwing his name around as a possible and viable QB in the NY Jets camp. Some headlines have said this morning, its Rodgers or bust for the Jets... why not Jimmy? Jimmy Garoppolo, QB Age: 31 2022 stats (49ers): 2,437 passing yards, 16 TD, 4 INT; 2 rushing TD Garoppolo's injury history is a serious concern and he doesn't exactly blow anyone away with his talents. Still, his career record of 40-17 speaks for itself. The ex-New England Patriots quarterback just finds ways to win. That's enough to warrant an opportunity to start fresh as a starting QB somewhere new.
Sounds to me like they are going to try to draft a QB. They paid him to mentor a young guy. 3 year deal with a bump the first year to deal with a younger guy coming in. They continue to build a playoff caliber roster without degrading the most important position from last year, but try to upgrade it anyway through the draft.
Just wait about a week until the tampering period opens. His injury history is also pretty long. He’ll still get more looks than last season though.
I give you FULL credit Tim!! It should have read "as reported by me AND Tim Campbell" Fucking Rapoport always credits the reporter that beats him to the punch, but states that it is being reported by him and that other person.
Update on the Geno Smith contract... $30 million of it is incentive clauses, and only $40 million (total) is fully guaranteed. So the deals by Carr and Smith both point to Daniel Jones being stoned out of his mind if he expects $45 million per year guaranteed. They're also both reminders to ignore that "AAV" crap reported by Spotrac and various reporters. Carr's deal has $50 million base salary in the highly unlikely fourth year. It's really a 3 year, $100 million contract with that fourth year to push out the cap. For that matter, that last year might even be an auto-void and we simply haven't heard about the void clause yet. Still looking for the full details on Geno, but it's now looking even more team-friendly than when it was first announced.
Like SteelersKing said, we just need to wait for the legal tampering period to begin. We got all the news on Carr because he was already on the market, first as a potential trade and then as an early free agent. We were getting news on Rodgers simply because the media is obsessed with whatever weird vacations he decides to take, not because of free agency. But unless there's another news item regarding the player (eg Daniel Jones suddenly changing agents), there isn't a reason for significant press around pending free agents. Jimmy G, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, etc will all get more attention once they're allowed to get down to business.
From what I had seen, it looked like the CEO of Athletes First was personally representing Daniel Jones in the contract negotiations. With Jones jumping ship from CAA, this was a high profile case for Athletes First, one that could have damaged their reputation if they didn't come through or cemented their place as THE top agency if they delivered. I'd say they did as well as could possibly be expected. It's not the bonkers money Jones allegedly wanted, but it's fantastic money given the one year of halfway decent performance that he has put up so far in his career to earn it. Jones was 15th in passing yards, tied for 21st in TDs thrown, 24th in yards per attempt, and 15th in QB passer rating. Pretty much the exact definition of "middle of the pack". It will be interesting to see the year-by-year details when they're available. So... for the Giants fans here, how do you feel about the signing?
All I can say is you are amazing at your projections. You seldom miss. On the other hand - If i ever got anything right, its the broken watch theory.
Daniel Jones, Giants agree to long-term deal The Giants and quarterback Daniel Jones beat the clock. According to multiple reports, Jones and the Giants came to an agreement on a long-term deal shortly before the 4 p.m. ET deadline for teams to use franchise tags. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that it is a four-year deal worth $160 million with another $35 million available through incentives. The full structure of the deal will bring more information into how long the Giants are truly committed to Jones as their starting quarterback, but Jones gave them reason to think he can lead them to success during the 2022 season and the Giants did not want to start searching for another quarterback this offseason. Instead, they will use their tag on running back Saquon Barkley and work on building around those two players as they try to get back to the playoffs again in 2023. PFT
Ravens put non-exclusive franchise tag on Lamar Jackson Lamar Jackson is available to any team that can sign him to a contract and is willing to give the Ravens two first-round draft picks. The Ravens put the non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson today. That means Jackson will be free to negotiate with other NFL teams, and can sign an offer sheet with any team that makes him a contract offer to his liking. Once he signs, the Ravens will have the option of either matching the offer and keeping Jackson, or declining to match the offer and taking the other team’s 2023 and 2024 first-round draft picks. Jackson could also sign the one-year franchise tender and stay with the Ravens for a guaranteed salary of $32.4 million for the 2023 season, then hit free agency again (or get franchise tagged again) in 2024. If the Ravens had put the exclusive tag on Jackson, it would have guaranteed him a salary of $45 million for the 2023 season, and would have prevented other teams from signing him. For all the Ravens’ talk that they are 200 percent committed to bringing Jackson back, the reality of giving him the non-exclusive tag is that there’s a real chance he won’t remain in Baltimore. Jackson is about to hit the open market, and he may be playing elsewhere this year. PFT
Everyone is calling the Ravens stupid.. the way I see it, if someone gives Lamar the highest contract ever, they are hurting their chances at a championship. Not only will he take up a lot of cap space, but they also lose the ability to make up some of that ground without first round picks the next couple of years. You get one big chance of Lamar not getting injured in his style of play, then he either decides he wants to learn how to play and you lose your advantage, or he starts playing for the next contract and just trying to stay healthy. He’s already shown you what type of player he is this season. Lamar has had one great season. The Ravens were smart in my opinion. Either they get him for $32.4M, the contract is more reasonable around $40M per year and they match, or someone else OVERPAYS and they get two more first rounders. They can get a good interim QB in free agency, then draft Herndon Hooker for their future. I hate to admit this because I hate the Ravens almost as much as I hate the Steelers, but it was a good move.
Since Lamar Jackson has a non-exclusive tag... Panthers and Dolphins have already said they will not pursue him.
Geno Smith vows “I’ll be much better” after signing new contract Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith had the best year of his career in 2022, resulting in signing the biggest contract of his career this week. But Smith says the best is yet to come. Responding to a tweet about his contract, Smith wrote on Twitter that he’s going to be better in 2023 than he was before. “I’ll be much better! Can’t wait,” Smith wrote. Last year Smith led the NFL with a 69.8 percent completion rate, had 4,282 passing yards (more than 1,000 more than he had previously had in any season of his career), threw 30 touchdown passes (17 more than his previous career high) and threw 11 interceptions (10 less than his previous career high). Usually, players who have career years like that at age 32 don’t come back even better the following year. Smith is promising to be the exception, and the Seahawks signing him to a contract extension suggests that they think he’s going to continue playing at a high level. PFT __________ ____________________ Sure. He'll be better at the grocery store, the used car lot and shit like that.
