Paging Ryan Poles, paging Ryan Poles... We'll take those first round picks, please and thank you. Here's your #1 pick and the QB of your choice.
I haven't researched it myself to confirm, and right now I don't have time. But in a recent interview Arthur Blank mentioned that in the last 20 years no team had made the Superbowl having a QB that took up more than 17% of the team's cap space. (Personally, I would probably draw the line at 15%.) Teams do have adjustments and carry-overs from last year, so the cap space available varies by team. But the allocated cap for 2023 is $224.8 million. $45 million would be 20% of this year's cap. If the guy had Elway's arm, Brady's poise, Peyton's brain, Brees' accuracy and Vick's speed, sure, consider it. But Daniel Jones??? Tag and trade.
Fun fact... Jones had 3205 passing yards. As a team, the Giants had 1698 yards after catch on their receptions. The other QBs had only 135.5 total yards passing, so even if absolutely all of their yardage was YAC, Jones only threw the ball an average of 5.25 yards downfield on his 317 completions. Suddenly his 67% completion percentage with just 5 interceptions doesn't seem like any kind of big deal.
Veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer is on the way out in New England. The Patriots are expected to cut Hoyer by the start of the new league year on March 15, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio. Hoyer is heading into the second year of a two-year, $4 million contract and $1.4 million of his salary for this season is guaranteed, but the Patriots have apparently decided it’s time to move on even though he’ll still cost $1.64 million against their salary cap this year. The 37-year-old Hoyer has spent a total of eight seasons with the Patriots over three separate stints and has also spent time with the Steelers, Cardinals, Browns, Texans, Bears, 49ers and Colts. PFT
It's a lot for any QB...Hard to believe that Jones could command anywhere close to that. All he's gotta do now is get the Giants to offer that annually over 5 years, fully guaranteed, and he'll pretty much match the Watson deal.
Per; PFT The Giants and agents for Daniel Jones reportedly had made progress toward an agreement Friday. A day later comes word from Tom Pelissero of NFL Media that the sides are expected to leave Indianapolis on Sunday “with no contract resolution in sight.” This as the franchise tag deadline grows closer. If the Giants and Jones’ representation from Athletes First don’t have an agreement by Tuesday afternoon, the team is expected to use the franchise tag on the quarterback. If they come to terms, then the Giants can use the tag on running back Saquon Barkley. A report this week indicated Jones’s agents are asking for more than $45 million per year on a long-term deal. This makes it more likely the Giants will apply the non-exclusive franchise tag, giving them the right to keep Jones at a one-year offer of $32.416 million. The Giants did not pick up Jones’ fifth-year option, so he is scheduled to become a free agent later this month. He is coming off his best season, throwing for 3,205 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions and running for 708 yards and seven touchdowns. The Giants made the postseason and beat the Vikings in the wild card round before losing to the Eagles in the divisional round. __________ ____________________ This made me laugh.
Yesterday the reports were he was 'leaning towards Jets'... shoulda known he'd be a Saint, lol. Good for him and the Saints.
Report: Daniel Jones’ agents headed to New Jersey for meetings with Giants According to a report on Sunday, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones‘ agents left Indianapolis “with no contract resolution in sight” ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to use the franchise tag. It appears talks will resume ahead of that deadline, however. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that Jones’ representatives are traveling to New Jersey for meetings with the Giants about a long-term deal. Reports have indicated that Jones is looking for a deal in the range of $45 million per season while the franchise tag for the 2023 season would carry a $32.416 million salary. The Giants and Jones could continue talking about a long-term deal after a tag is applied, but using it on Jones would preclude using it on running back Saquon Barkley and Barkley is also set to become an unrestricted free agent on March 15. So, the Cousins contract doesnt seem to look so bad anymore. Carr is going to rake in, $37.5M/y, Cousins sits at $35M/y. Cousins’ $35M/y ranks 10th leaguewide per average annual salary after the Carr extension. This Carr contract will effect the Vikings dilemma as to extend him (Cousins) or not. Then there is Rodgers. He's in the $50M neighborhood. Its crazy to me... Here's a look at the top 11 2023 QB contracts from OTC... Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson gotta be licking their chops? Daniel Jones wanting 45? Can and will it all get to a point where its unsustainable?
"Carr structures his deal to accomodate Saints cap issues" = I have to give due credit to Mickey Loomis. I'm not a fan of the way he kicks the can down the road on the cap, but somehow he pulled the rabbit out of the hat and got a first round pick. Now throw in this signing. Even after last year's trades, he has a full complement of draft picks this year AND a legit franchise QB for that offense. New Orleans just leap-frogged Tampa as the team to beat in the NFC NASCAR division this year. I don't think the Raiders have grounds to cry foul, but I wouldn't be surprised if this deal was 90% worked out back when Carr visited to discuss a potential trade.
Ravens say talks with Lamar Jackson to go up to tag deadline OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens will apparently wait until Tuesday's deadline before placing the franchise tag on quarterback Lamar Jackson. "Today and up until 3:30 tomorrow, a lot of energy will be utilized in trying to get a deal done," Ravens executive vice president Ozzie Newsome told "The Bernie Kosar Show" on Monday. "If not, we will put the franchise tag on him." There have been two players to receive the franchise tag on Monday: Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard and Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram. Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne received the franchise tag last week. But the Ravens will look to use all the available time to try to get a long-term deal done with Jackson before Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline. The sides have been unable to reach an agreement after 25 months of negotiations. This would mark the first time in three years that Baltimore has used the franchise tag (linebacker Matthew Judon in 2020). One of the biggest questions in the NFL this week is whether the Ravens will apply the exclusive or nonexclusive tag on Jackson. The exclusive tag, which is projected to cost $45 million, would allow Baltimore to control Jackson's contract rights in 2023 as well as any trade talks. The nonexclusive tag, which is less expensive at $32.416 million, would allow Jackson to speak to other teams and give the Ravens the right to match any offer sheet or take two first-round picks as compensation for losing Jackson. At the NFL combine on Wednesday, Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said the team has long prepared for the contingency plans involving Jackson. "It's not like we didn't know we might be in this position," DeCosta said. "Last year at this time, we talked about it, so we've had a full year to really discuss all the different plans. We'll make the right decision." ESPN
Seahawks, Geno Smith finalizing multi-year contract Geno Smith will remain the Seahawks’ starting quarterback in 2023, and perhaps beyond. The Seahawks and Smith are finalizing a multi-year contract, NFL Network is reporting. Smith was slated to become a free agent on March 15, but the Seahawks didn’t want him to leave, and now he won’t. The 32-year-old Smith had his best NFL season in 2022 and was named the league’s Comeback Player of the Year, and now he’s ready to come back to Seattle. Whether Smith remains the Seahawks’ starter beyond 2023 will depend in large part on whether he can have another strong season, as well as whether Seattle decides to draft a quarterback who could spend a year developing while Smith starts. But at least for this year, Smith is the Seahawks’ starter, as they’ll attempt to return to the playoffs with a roster that looks a lot like last year’s. PFT
What a long, strange trip it's been for Geno. I'm happy for him in that he finally gets to cash in. The difference between Geno and Daniel Jones is that last year Geno actually earned it. Geno, Mahomes and Burrow were the only three QBs in the league with 4000+ passing yards, 30+ TDs and a 100+ passer rating. Geno also led the league in completion percentage.
