NFL Draft General Discussion

A few teams, yes, and he may drop down some team boards rather than dropping off the radar entirely. As @EvertonBears noted, the main character concern is likely to be the part about lying to the police.

What made the entire incident shocking here (I'm about an hour away - it was a big deal on the local news) was the driver of the vehicle that crashed. She was 24 and a recruiting staffer. That made it surprising enough already. But then to find out her blood alcohol level was .197 - and that three other people were actually willing to get into the vehicle with her as the driver - was and still is mind-boggling.

Its odd to me also that reckless driving and racing are both misdemeanors in Georgia. At that rate of speed they were traveling, the lane changing (illegal), crossing into on-coming traffic lanes and the sorts, you'd think there ought to be a stiffer potential penalties involved, especially since 2 people are now dead, but i suppose that can change as things are sorted out.

Carter not giving correct or giving misleading info to the police is really a red flag and leaving a crash-site involving people you were hanging out with is way wacked. How in hell do you not know what you were doing or where you were?

Im confident tho, that all will be revealed once the investigation is completed, there is a lot of evidence known already. Im also confident that in todays NFL (and all professional sports), this incident may not mean shit to most teams in need... that sounds harsh, maybe a bit sinical, but i think thats the trend these days as my eyes view it.

Carter turned himself in last night in Atlanta around 1130pm, paid $4000 bond and walked out about 15 minutes later. Carter said in a statement on Wednesday that he would leave the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis in order to “answer the misdemeanor charges against me and to make certain that the complete and accurate truth is presented.”

Defensive tackle Jalen Carter returned to Athens, Georgia to be booked on misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing on Wednesday night, but it was reportedly a brief stay.

According to multiple reports that PFT has confirmed, Carter has returned to the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Thursday. Carter was booked and released after posting a $4,000 bond on Wednesday night.

Carter’s agents announced that he would not be working out ahead of the warrant for his arrest on charges related to the January car crash that killed Carter’s Georgia teammate Devin Willock and football team staff member Chandler LeCroy. He is expected to meet with teams and do other activities before the Combine is over.

Per a league source, those meetings with teams will include discussion of the charges that Carter faces and he will not decline to answer questions on advice of counsel. Those conversations will join the ongoing legal process in helping to determine how much they impact the standing of a player who has been pegged as a likely top-five pick this year.

There's a few things in here..

    1. The most important one in the case of the draft, I agree with @EvertonBears That is probably the most important piece of information to any front office that is looking at drafting him. Did he lie, where was he immediately following the accident? The details of where all of them were prior to the race/drive will open up a lot of relevant information as well.

    2. Finding out her blood alcohol level was at .197... This is a more delicate conversation. We don't know the young woman at all. If she was a functioning alcoholic, AND IN NO WAY AM I ASSUMING SHE WAS, a .197 really isn't something most of us would even recognize due to functional tolerance. Now, even if that was a given, .197 is a LOT of alcohol, so I don't think that is the case. But, given the circumstances leading up to the accident, where they were will give a better picture of what kind of trouble the whole situation means to Carter. It wouldn't surprise me, if several teams asked, if the NFL didn't have it's own investigation, given it is an NFL prospect. I'm not sure if this falls under the CBA or not? @beachbum , or anyone know if that's the case? Or is he basically exempt from this as a prospect, as far as the league is concerned?

My theory... He spent that hour after the accident talking another person involved into saying they were the one driving the other vehicle, which will in essence absolve Carter from any legal and/or NFL related ramifications. The story line will then go to the other person for comments, and will disappear before the draft ever occurs. Unless the police investigation leads to footage of some kind that he was behind the wheel, this is probably going to go away.

Reporting out of the combine also had teams preparing to question Carter about other character issues that are/were not linked to the arrest warrant.

So diving a little deeper in... She looks like a smaller girl, I am being generous to call her around 140 for the sake of alcohol evaluation, it's probably much closer to 120-125.

Given that expectation... She could have had 8 drinks in 4 hours to get to that BAC at 140, or 5-6 drinks in 4 hours at 120. It also means, that she would almost certainly be slurring a lot and unable to walk properly. Personally, I don't drink at all during the week, but if we get together with friends on the weekend, I could throw down 12 drinks in a 4 hour period which is the equivalent for a 200 pound man. If I have 12 drinks in a 4 hour period... I would NOT be able to drive. I'm surprised she was able to miss the cars they were swerving around.

The next big question is, was Carter also in the same environment leading up to the incident, and how much had he consumed, if any. I would think if he hadn't been drinking at all, why leave the scene?

    Call me skeptical...

Calijah Kancey runs fastest 40 ever for a defensive tackle at the Scouting Combine

Pittsburgh defensive tackle Calijah Kancey has made NFL Scouting Combine history.

Kancey ran an official 4.67-second 40-yard dash, the fastest time by a defensive tackle at the Combine since 2003, according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats. (Timing at the Combine was less standardized before 2003.)

The 6-foot-0, 280-pound Kancey broke the Combine record of 4.68 seconds set by a previous Pitt defensive tackle, Aaron Donald.

Kancey was an All-American and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2022. He’s expected to be a first-round draft pick.

Some more things that are known... Carter also had a major speeding ticket in late September. This might actually be the biggest concern for some teams - he's demonstrating that he's a habitual reckless driver. With a high draft pick on the line, you don't want the next Henry Ruggs.

In the audio of a 911 call, you hear someone in the background shouting at "JC" and "Jalen" to get out of there. Pretty strong evidence that he was indeed at the scene. (Also evidence that someone trying to "help" him did far more harm than good.)

The SUV that she was driving was a rental for her staff duties - and that she was supposed to have already returned. She should not even have been in possession of the vehicle that night.

Mildly in his favor: video from a traffic light a few minutes before the accident shows both vehicles. Only one of them took off at high speed when the light turned green. (This supports the contention that whatever high speed activity took place was not a premeditated street race.)

Also noteworthy... he left the Combine when he first heard of the warrants - about an hour before he was scheduled to be at the podium - and immediately went back to Athens to turn himself in. No hesitation whatsoever. So he may have listened to someone pushing bad advice on him that night, but he's stepping up now and getting it right.

I don't know how many interviews he has scheduled now that he's back at the Combine, but the teams that have him on their list will each have 20 minutes alone with him in an interview room.

Falcons GM Terry Fontenot had a pretty good quote from yesterday that fits perfectly... "If we get here and all of a sudden a player runs a lot faster than we expected, he jumps out of the gym. All these things happen. It's not like you're going to take him from this category and raise him to another one, but you're going to spend more time on him."

I don't think teams are surprised that Kancey is quick, but I suspect he now has a lot more teams spending time following up on him...

In my opinion he was already a top 15 pick. All this does is solidified his position. He already had 32 teams looking at him, imho. The film doesn’t lie, his quickness is what got him to that point… in his position a 3 cone drill time is more important than a 40. I expect him to excel in that as well… but I haven’t seen his time in that. Did he even do that drill?

He was disappointing in the 10 yard split.

Do you want a guy who can get to the QB, or get to the sidelines when you sub him out?

None of this matters, his film is great, he’ll be a top 20 pick.

He had the fastest 10 yard split amongst DT yesterday. Definitely not disappointing, but I do want to see if he can repeat at Pitt’s Pro Day.

That's my bad. When I was looking at the results, I thought I had the DT selected, but it was all participants. Thanks @StlCrtn !!

If I were him, I wouldn't even do those drills at the pro day.

That’s my thought, but a repeat performance could lock him into the top half of the 1st round. Right now, he’s just locked into the 1st.

Adetomiwa Adebawore, is an DT IMO, now he didn't play much of that at Northwestern, he did play it at the Senior Bowl. He is taller and longer and same weight as Kancey. He ran a 1.61 10 yd split.

He was impressive all around. Dude is muscled up....and he ran a sub 4.6 40 at 280+Lb's.

On the NFL website its listed as a 4.49 in the 40. If that is official that is faster than Travon Walker. Also a 37.5 inch Vertical Jump and 10'5'' Broad 27 Bench reps.

Damn. I might be confusing his time with someone else. I thought it was like 4.56. Blazing either way for a man that size. Sub 4.5 is incredible.

Adetomiwa Adebawore needs to get a real name! WTF?

He definitely goes top 5 in names.

He was born in the United States, but his name sounds Nigerian. There are more kids his age in Nigeria than there are in the United States. Eventually Nigeria will be the 3rd, maybe 2nd (behind India) in population.
