Vikings complete interview with Sean Desai

The Vikings have completed an interview with Seahawks assistant Sean Desai for their open defensive coordinator position, the team announced.

The Vikings are seeking a replacement for Ed Donatell, who they fired Thursday.

The Minnesota defense was one of the worst in franchise history finishing the season ranked 28th in points allowed (25.1) and 31st in yards allowed (388.7).

The Vikings interviewed Saints co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen on Monday. They have requested an interview with Steelers senior defensive assistant Brian Flores.

Desai, the associate head coach/defense for the Seahawks, also has drawn interest from the Dolphins. He was on the Browns’ list, too, before they hired Jim Schwartz.

Desai began his NFL coaching career with the Bears in 2013 as a defensive quality control coach. He earned a promotion to safeties coach (2019-20) and then served as defensive coordinator in 2021.

Vikings complete interview with Mike Pettine

The Vikings have completed an interview with their assistant head coach, Mike Pettine, for the defensive coordinator opening, the team announced.

The Vikings are seeking a replacement for Ed Donatell, who they fired Thursday.

The Vikings interviewed Saints co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen on Monday and Seahawks associate head coach/defense Sean Desai on Tuesday. They are scheduled to interview Steelers senior defensive assistant Brian Flores on Thursday.

Pettine joined Kevin O’Connell’s staff in Minnesota last February. He spent the 2021 season working in Chicago and was the Packers defensive coordinator from 2018-20.

In 2014-15, Pettine was head coach of the Browns and went 10-22.

Your offense was pretty good to have a 13-4 record with a poorly ranked defense. Wow those are some rough stats.

The Defense was just awful ìt still blows my mind how Ed Donatell made no adjustments you had 4-3 personal but you wanted to play a 3-4...it was like trying to force a square peg into a round hole it just did not work

Flores has interviewed for a lot of jobs. I wonder if everyone is just bringing him in so he can’t sue them? Because that’s a lot of interviews for someone as good as he is not to announce he’s taken one.

Can I ask you question cause I don't know anything about him? is he good at his job, cause Ed Donatell was a wasted ÿear like to hear your opinion gidion72

I think he’s a good coach. He’s not a yes man. He won’t do things that are against trying to win. A coordinator job doesn’t have to deal with the owner if they want to lose for a better draft pick. He did good in NE as a DC. The Steelers LBs were better under his tutelage. The Steelers changed DCs in the offseason. So next season might tell more about his effectiveness than this season. If the defense of the Steelers fails off, then maybe he helped it last season. From his time in NE you know he’s a good DC.

Thanks I hope he has an aggressive mindset cause the Vikings have to get younger and faster I've had enough of the bend don't break defense,as long he can make adjustments ĥe a good DC nice to know

From all the stuff Ive read, im personally not sold on Flores. He is carrying a lot of baggage (to be polite) and at times in Miami, he seemed like a control freak of sorts, demanding more and more control of team operations. His relationship with GM Grier was shaky to say the least... Flores wanted control over Draft decisions and Free Agency and it appears he seemed to be a thorn in upper-managements side by his actions and demands (according to Ross). Flores even had a rocky relationship with Tua during his stint with the Dolphins. I posted the records of Flores while at Miami... they never made the playoffs under Flores and the Dolphins had really bad starts to the seasons under his rule.

Flores had the Dolphins playing really good defensively, if not great, maybe if he sticks to the task at hand and doesnt get or want to get in everybody else's business he will be all right. I just feel a little apprehensive at the moment.

A thorn in upper management huh i really hope not cause the Vikings just went through that with Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer at the end of things,it was pure chaos just have to wait and see who becomes the Vikings next DC

Maybe Ross and Grier had roles in the tussles between them, it does take 2 to tangle. Just threw some food for thought out there.
