A bit of irony with Donatell replacing Zimmer's defense... After Mora was fired, Falcons owner Arthur Blank went with that hog sooey nitwit Petrino as head coach. Zimmer was the DC we got to replace Donatell for that season. (The next year we had Mike Smith as head coach, and he brought in his own guys to implement his system rather than keeping Zimmer.) There were very few positives from that 2007 season. Petrino basically destroyed everything he touched. No one had done that much damage in Atlanta in that short of a time span since General Sherman. But most of the positives we did have were on defense. Third year linebacker Michael Boley thrived in Zimmer's scheme, second round rookie corner Chris Houston showed a lot of promise, and we had a small school late round rookie DT who did so well under Zimmer that he became a starter in midseason. None of it lasted though. A game later that rookie DT (Trey Lewis) blew out his knee, and the other starting DT also suffered a knee injury in the same game. Lewis fell on the stairs while on crutches and wrecked the knee all over again, missing the full 2008 season and never starting again. Boley wasn't as strong in Mike Smith's defense in 2008 and wasn't resigned for 2009. Chris Houston didn't fit as well in Smith's scheme either and was traded after the 2009 season. That's a general problem that I'm guessing is hurting Minnesota as well. Atlanta poured MASSIVE draft and free agency resources into the defense in 2006 through 2010 - including four first round picks, four second round picks, and four third round picks in that five year span. Much of that effort was just spinning our wheels because each new defensive scheme, head coach and DC wiped out some of what their predecessors had done.
Too Zimmers credit, when he wore just the DC hat, he wasnt bad, but in Minnesota, he wore many hats and that may have contributed to his gradual downfall... just a thought. His days in Cincinnati wernt too shabby either. I have to admit, when they hired him, I was kinda fired up about it, but the preverbal wheels fell off... probably GM at the time, Rick Speilman oughta take some flack too.
Mahomes and Kelce trail only Montana and Rice, Brady and Gronk for playoff TD passes Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are only in their fifth postseason together, but they’re already in elite company in their playoff accomplishments. Mahomes has thrown 11 touchdown passes to Kelce in the postseason, which is the third-most in NFL history for any quarterback-receiver pair. The only pairs who have more are Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, who connected for 12 touchdown passes in the postseason, and Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, who had 15. Mahomes has 28 postseason touchdown passes in his career. Kelce has 12 postseason touchdown catches in his career, having also caught one from Alex Smith in the 2017 playoffs. PFT
Bengals LT Jonah Williams (knee), RG Alex Cappa (ankle) ruled out vs. Bills in Divisional Round Joe Burrow will be without three of his five starting linemen when he takes the field Sunday in Orchard Park, New York. Left tackle Jonah Williams (knee) and right guard Alex Cappa (ankle) have been officially ruled out of Cincinnati's Divisional Round game versus Buffalo. Williams suffered his knee injury in the Bengals' wild-card win over Baltimore, and joins Cappa and right tackle La'el Collins (who was lost for the year late in the regular season) among the starters who will not be able to go in Cincinnati's biggest game of the 2022 season to date. NFL.com ______________ _________________________ Terrible news for the Bengals... going to need some players to step up.
