As for why many steelers fans want him gone how about the fact that of his 10 seasons with a playoff appearance has been 1 and done in 6 of them.
IMO, Steelers fans calling for Tomlins head is a bit far fetched. Canada on the other hand is definitely in hot water or should be. I think the offense is better than what they are producing, even with a shotty o-line. If they address the o-line under Canada or not, things will get real interesting in Pittsburgh, quickly. Its been a tough season in Steelerville, especially early on, but they sure have turned it around down the stretch and put them selves in the mix/hunt at week 18.
I think the NFL should do away with the by week. Not for this season but next season the only thing a team should gain by having the best record is home field advantage. It would generate more revenue.
Similar accomplishments, but much different paths. When Payton took over the Saints they had not been to the playoffs in 6 years. He built that team into respectability. He had won 3 playoff games in his final 5 years as HC of the Saints. One in each of 3 different seasons. Tomlin took over a perennial playoff team and Super Bowl contender, winning one with a team that had previously won the Super Bowl two years prior to him taking over with the same roster. He learned the Steelers system and simply kept doing it. In the mean time, he hasn’t won a playoff game in 6 years. Missing the playoffs completely 3 times in that span. But I agree with those that said, if Tomlin were available, he would be just as wanted by teams as Payton is. The Steelers fans, who are used to winning playoff games and now are not, have nothing to do with the rest of the NFL that would want a successful coach. I’m not convinced Tomlin has the same ability to build a successful program like Payton has already shown he can. Like any other successful coach though, both of these guys had extraordinary QBs during their best years as coaches. Take that element away and it is more difficult no matter who the coach is.
How, he is still in the same Steelers organization... The one's at the top have been through all the success. He doesn't have to teach them anything. The people in charge of the draft recognized an opportunity to replace Roethlisberger, took it and from what we saw in 2022, may have done so effectively. Now, a different scenario would be if Tomlin was let go from Pittsburgh (never going to happen), go to a downtrodden team. He teaches the organization how to win, helps with a QB search and builds that team into a winner. That's what Payton did. Payton went to the Saints, worked with Mickey Loomis to trade for Brees and the rest is history. Loomis was there for 5 years before the Saints turned it around. Payton did it almost immediately.
Thank you for your perspective on this. In no way am I minimizing Sean Payton and his ability. My comments are directed to many Steelers fans(none here) who call for Tomlins head on a yearly basis. None of us know how much say he has but I, for one, am happy with the way the arc of the season went for the Steelers and, I feel, much of that was Tomlin.
Coaching for the Rooney's has definite advantages but the #1 voice on draft day is Tomlin. It was Cowher (after he had Donahoe sacked) before Tomlin. Getting Brees was a helluva move. Not sure how much of that was Payton but it was a very fortunate occurrence which happens almost never, and wouldn't have happened that time had the Dolphins doctors not overruled Saban. Brees covered a lot of warts. You can't put Ben on Drew's level.
We actually do. There's been pretty solid reporting on this. Tomlin has control of the 53 man roster. He is the loudest voice on draft day.
I have to laugh at the idiocy of several online conspiracies that the NFL rigged the chiefs game because it needed them there for the following storylines; Both #1 seeds making the championship Andy Reid revenge story Kelce brothers against each other This is all laughable because the Superbowl does not need any side stories to pump it up sure maybe some divisional games need pumping up but not the Superbowl. People are watching no matter what they don't even care who is in it there is still going to be the majority of the people tuned into the game Then there is the gambling theory that Vegas fixed it because most of the money was on the Bengals. If Vegas fixed it wouldn't they have made the Chiefs win by 1 so they didn't have to pay anybody? Btw you are all going to high on your score guesses 3 of the last 5 have gone under and this year will make 3 in a row hoping under. Chiefs will win 22 to 21. Butler will miss his first xp then they will go for 2 the next time failing getting them to 12 halftime the score will be 14 to 12 eagles. Chiefs score on opening drive to take the lead 19 to 14 early in the 4th the eagles gets a miles sanders td to take the lead 20 to 19 they will go for 2 but a false start makes them kick the xp instead now leading 21 to 19. Fans of both teams need defibulators the rest of the game. With 2 seconds left Butler atones for his missed xp by nailing a 48 yard field goal out to have holding negate it moved back to 58 yards with the announcers calling it 59 Butler splits the uprights making it look even easier than the previous kick to send the Chiefs to a 22 to 21 victory
Love people chalking up to elaborate conspiracies that which can be easily explained by mere incompetence. Occam’s Razor and whatnot. People are stupid and can’t deal with reality any more.
one show is calling for the return of the emergency QB rule because what happened to the 49ers makes the sport look bad. First where are all these extra QBs going to come from so that all 32 teams carry a 3rd QB. Secondly does anybody realize that last QB is not getting any practice reps so are they going to really look any good if pressed into duty? 272 games give or take and because 1 game had all the QBs knocked out we want to go back to a rule that obviously teams don't feel we need or it would still be in effect. Teams decided they would rather dress another player than have a 3rd QB because that 3rd guy is screwed anyways.
A lot of teams don’t even keep three on their roster. They don’t get to play or practice unless one of the other two gets injured. They get to be the opponents QB in practice, so at least they are still throwing it to scrub players, but it’s action.
The over/under was 49.5 yesterday. Im going under. It almost seems like a high scoring affair with Mahomes and company vs Hurts and company, but one thing ive noticed is the dog-eat-dog defense both of these teams have and the Chiefs have really elevated their defense during the post season.
Interesting thought would be to do away with the bye week in the postseason but add a second bye week to the regular season. I think the NFLPA would want the extra week off for the players, especially since we've gone to a 17-game season. And it would generate an extra week of national TV revenue for the league. Win-win. Oh... and to do away with the postseason bye week, they'd need to go to eight seeds per conference. That means two more postseason games - and even more TV revenue for the league.
