NFL - Random Opinions

Was watching highlights from the game Brett Favre had the day after his dad passed and I got to thinking that his WR corps was pretty underrated. Javon Walker, Donald Driver and Robert Ferguson, with Weasley Walls at TE and Ahman Green and Tony Fisher and I think Najeh Davenport at RB. Team was pretty stacked at the skilled positions.

My random question is how in the world does anyone think Carson Wentz starting another NFL game anytime in the next ever would be a good idea. Also how does Ron Rivera go into that game NOT knowing his team can be eliminated from playoff contention.

I'd suggest firing the HC immediately after all that, but really what needs to happen is dig a really big hole, throw the entire organization in it, then pave over the top and start a new organization.

    They know Taylor ain’t it.

Play Wentz, hope he plays well and pray someone wants to take him off your hands this offseason.

He knew they needed to win to remain in, but it doesn’t look like he was interested in what other teams needed to do to help.

I don’t think the primary concern in DC was making the playoffs this season. They have a lot of catching up to do in the East.

Rivera back-tracked after the fact (probably an attempt to cover his ass), from what i read, but still, it was awkward to say the least.

It's an odd look, but I don't think it's something that would call for him to get the hook.

It doesn't look like an ownership change is imminent, so the likelihood of continued suckitude in Washington is extremely high.

I'm with EB on this one... Wentz was a train wreck (2-4) before Heinicke took over. Taylor was also 5-3-1 and got them back into playoff contention despite losing two games in a row and they were playing a team prone to giving up offensive yards. The last game, which Heinicke started, but Wentz finished, against the 49ers... Heinicke actually outperformed Wentz.

Neither of these QBs are going to be considered players to build a roster around... but considering they were in the driver seat as a playoff contender, they should have taken them for who they are, game managers. Hainicke had 6 INTs in 9 starts, while Wentz had 6 INTs in 6 starts... Hence a better winning record...Then the Commanders were eliminated from the playoffs on the back of a 3 INT performance on Sunday. They made the wrong choice.

I get what you are saying by hoping Wentz made a good enough impression that someone would take him off their hands, but when you actually have a playoff spot and all you have to do is win those last two games, you owe it to the ownership, the season ticket holders and the fans to do what is best to make the playoffs. Once in, you never know what could happen. It's a bad look for the franchise, imho, and if that was their intent..it failed miserably. No one will want him now.

Being this is your opinion, and this goes for @EvertonBears as well, I want to clarify that I'm not saying either of you are wrong or that I agree with how Washington handled it.

My post was more to point out that the Commanders are likely already looking towards 2023 knowing that neither passer is their future.

The better option, if they were all in on next season, would have been to start Wentz and go to Taylor if it looked bad. It makes no sense to continue to showcase Carson for trade partners if he plays like shit and going back to Heinicke is a simple move to appease the fanbase.

You take a shot on Carson rebounding for two solid games and maybe getting some low draft capital out of the mistake for trading for him, but if it's not working out you just move back to Taylor to close out the season.

    I'm not disagreeing with you.

My opinion is that Rivera did NOT know they could be eliminated yesterday. He assumed that had they lost, they would have an opportunity next week to rectify it, albeit with another team needing to lose. I don't think he realized that the Packers and Lions play each other, thus with a Packers win yesterday, they were eliminated this week. It doesn't change the fact that they were facing elimination by losing. His mindset should have been to try to win this game at all cost. Once Wentz had his second pick in the early 2nd quarter, the switch should've been made..imho.

    Here's another question:

If the Packers and Lions tie, why are the Redskins eliminated? They beat the Packers and lost to the Lions... It's obviously already been determined, but I am genuinely curious after all this conversation. Is it common opponents?

-wait, I think I answered my own question... Would it go to the Lions because they beat the Redskins and were 1-0-1 vs the Packers? I am assuming that is why...

Could be that the decision was one that was handed to him, rather than one he was making on his own.

That would be some interesting info to know for sure.

Can you imagine, if that's the case?? Do you think Mayhew has that much power? I've always thought Rivera would have more power over game day personnel decisions.

Unlikely imo. Rivera is no push over coach, at all. At least thats how i've always thought of him.

There's HC's in the league who would bend to that, i think it just happened in Chicago actually. Just not Rivera imo.

It's possible you're right, and being that it's your opinion, the only thing I'll offer as a counter is that I always viewed Rivera as a 'players coach'.

It hardly seems like the kind of move a coach would stick with for an entire game when winning it for his players would be the foremost goal.

So, I'm watching the halftime of Jags-Titans and they're talking about Sean Payton like he's Belichick and every team would be winning the lottery if they landed him. Yet, he's just 9-8 in the playoffs with one championship and 152-89 in the regular season.

Meanwhile, Tomlin is 162-93-2 with an 8-9 record in the playoffs and he's basically one step away from being lynched by many Steelers fans and berated by others.

    I just don't get it.

If you were an NFL owner/gm, that was desperate for a HC. If you had a chance to get a Tomlin/Payton? You'd jump at it !!
