Right? Wilson when asked if they let the defense down, "No" and now the coach is looking at benching him. Fields is looking the best of his draft class right now, and that's not something I thought I would be saying at the beginning of the season.
Agree with your post, but just want to highlight this. We should ALWAYS do this. If the trenches are good, you can better evaluate everyone else. And if you get those guys right, they don't break the bank and are staples of the team for a decade. And if at *that* point you don't have the QB, you look for a year to pull the trigger, like Pace did with Fields. Though, how ironic would it be if Pace's parting gift was actually getting the QB right?
I gotta disagree here. Justin, after starting slowly/badly has done what we’ve asked—start to learn. Make quick decisions, make pass plays under pressure, use his legs, and make life a nightmare for opposing DCs. It’s year 2. You get 3 more years before you have to worry about paying Fields big $$. That, and I don’t know what stud QB you’re referring to. Young has struggled this year and Stroud has too. The Kentucky kid is textbook definition of ‘flash in the pan’ where for 2 years you didn’t know he existed as a college QB now he’s playing well when his history of tape has more questions than the desired information to gamble your future on if you’re a GM. And even if the bears/Poles indulges your idea, the OL is still fucking garbage. The weapons are still underutilized, and you’re going to reset growing pains clock to 0 when fields has grown a lot since draft day of last year. You neglect to add Allen has the luxury of one of the better left tackles and one of the best OL in football so when he’s not running, he has lots of time compared to Fields’ LT’s and C’s ass being in his face less than a second after the ball is snapped. Am I allowed to take my victory lap on calling Wilson a bust yet? Fields too accountability and Wilson took zero when asked if he could have done more to put his team in a position to succeed. I want this level of optimism, but conventional wisdom, especially after Mitch says Poles needs to make this happen. And we’re back to square one of ‘does Poles suck?’ We won’t know till he starts putting it together. If Poles pulls a pace and drops 75+ percent of resources in the defense and we’re left frustrated when the defense gives the offense the ball on the opposing teams’ 40 yard line and the offense makes 3 downs and 3 points look utterly fucking painful, this team isn’t contending for shit.
No shit sherlock. That answer was in response to a hypothetical posed by Ev. If you and others actually read my posts you would see that I said I wouldn't do that now given that it's not contract time. I didn't neglect that because the point is Fields is running too much, whether it's been designed runs or running for his life due to the o-line. It's not sustainable. BWW decided to bring up Josh Allen taking too many hits, which I actually think isn't good for his career either. This is where we agree.
Mitch has nothing to do with Poles and Poles has nothing to do with Mitch. This isn't conventional wisdom....it's pessimism caused by years of mental abuse by this franchise.
I mean, I do have the nagging feeling that they won't take a LT prospect because they feel like they got their guy for value in Braxton Jones. And I won't shake it until I see it happen.
Correct. I’m talking explicitly about the general manager when it began to look like Mitch was getting it—Pace invested solely in defense and the offense couldn’t finish shit when the defense gave it to them on a silver platter. Poles gets more time, but his actions this off-season dictate what the offense will be for future contention. My pessimism is based on a generation of multiple GMs saying ‘fuck it’ when it comes to offense and investing in defense and ST. Until the clown vortex proves it’s not one, it just is. I read your other posts. Given the situation between drafting Bryce Young (who is far from a sure thing even with his heisman) or paying a qb 40 million ‘hypothetically,’ you choose wrong, frankly. Discussing whether or not to pay a qb 40 million “hypothetically” means the guy has to be doing something right. And if that’s a real conversation in the future it won’t be because Justin did all that heavy lifting with his legs. So it boggles my mind that you’d want to say ‘no thanks’ after decades of a spectrum of comically bad to middling to slightly/inconsistently above average at best at a position this franchise has never gotten right.
And I hope that this is the conversation we are having in 2 years because Justin did it with his arm and his head. Boggles your mind that I wouldn't commit $40 million to a guy who's made 22 starts and put up below average passing stats in that time? Got it. Pat's mind has been boggled.
In fairness anyone reading this should be boggled by it. We finally have a talented QB but we want to move on from him because he's only made 22 starts so far and still needs to improve as a passer. Let's just start over. Because that's smart.
Fields isn't an all pro at this moment in time. Far from it. He has a lot to improve on. But if he hasn't shown enough to warrant some patience I have no idea what's going on.
IF it were contract time you would. So don't hide behind it's not contract time so I wouldn't shit. That's just silly.
You're trying too hard man. If Fields contract were up right now....I would sign him. Because you have a chance to build something with him. Rather than watching him walk and starting over with someone from college that might be good....when you know you have a QB that is good and is probably just gonna get even better. Moving on from Fields shouldn't be part of any kind of discussion at this moment in time. Josh Allen was still completing less than 60% of his passes 22 starts in. Plenty of really good QBs have figured things about year 3 and even into year 4.
And the Bills wisely waited until he got good (after year 3 and a couple playoffs wins) before extending him. It’s amazing that folks consider it mind boggling if someone isn’t ready to break the bank to resign Fields now.
