Christian Darrisaw will not play on Thanksgiving

Vikings left tackle Christian Darrisaw was cleared from the concussion protocol in time to play against the Cowboys, but he wound up back in the protocol before the day was out.

Darrisaw left the 40-3 loss in the first half to be evaluated for a concussion and he was ruled out with his second concussion in as many weeks before the start of the second half. Darrisaw will not be making it back to try for a hat trick.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters that Darrisaw has already been ruled out of Thursday’s game against the Patriots. O’Connell also said that the team is going to be “very cautious” with Darrisaw beyond this week.

Blake Brandel played in place of Darrisaw after Sunday’s injury, but the Vikings offered little resistance to a Cowboys defense that sacked Kirk Cousins seven times. They’ll hope that things go better against New England in a few days.

Justin Jefferson: “Embarrassing” loss to Cowboys was “a lesson learned”

The Vikings followed a regular-season win for the ages with the worst home loss in decades.

Meeting with reporters on Monday, star receiver Justin Jefferson called the 40-3 loss to the Cowboys “embarrassing” and a “disaster all around” and “it happens . . . we’re human beings” and a “lesson learned.”

The lesson was, as Jefferson sees it, to get the ball out faster. “I wish we had adjusted faster throughout the game,” Jefferson said.

The bad news, or maybe it’s good news depending on how it goes, is that the Vikings will quickly be back on the horse after suffering the worst home defeat since the Kennedy administration.

The bad news comes from the fact that they won’t have left tackle Christian Darrisaw, who suffered a concussion during the game, his second in two Sundays. They’ll need to do everything better and faster against the Patriots, who have a defense good enough to shut down the Vikings’ offense.

Still, Jefferson said he’s glad the Vikings have a chance to get the bad taste out of their mouth, with a short-week game. And he’s right — as long as the bad taste isn’t replaced by an even worse one.

Jefferson also said something that coach Kevin O’Connell said on Sunday and that other players have mentioned since the game ended. The Vikings are “still 8-2.”

That’s not the way to think of it, if they want to avoid saying, come Thursday night and Friday, that they’re “still 8-3.” The better thing to say would be, “We’re 0-1 and just got beat by 37 points and may have been exposed as frauds and what are we going to do to avoid giving critics more ammunition to say, ‘Yep, they’re frauds’?”

It’s not as concise as “still 8-2,” but you get the point.

Kevin O’Connell: Vikings were dejected after loss, I’m proud of how we responded

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell says his team bounced back quickly from its lowest moment.

On Sunday, the Vikings got blown out at home, 40-3 by the Cowboys. But they shook it off quickly to beat the Patriots on Thursday night, and O’Connell was proud of that.

“Four days after being here with a pretty dejected feeling, asking our team to respond and our coaches to respond, and show up tonight on a mission to try to play really good football team and try to get a win, I could not be more proud of my football team and staff,” O’Connell said.

O’Connell said he knew the day after the Cowboys loss that the way his team responded would go a long way toward defining what kind of season they’re going to have.

“You could feel it Monday,” O’Connell said. “We really needed to challenge ourselves to emotionally and physically play with unbelievable enthusiasm.”

O’Connell thinks he has the kind of team that will step up when the chips are down.

“My goal here is just to have our organization ready to put it all together,” O’Connell said. “Even when people don’t give us a chance or adversity hits, that’s when I believe the best parts of our team come out, and I think that will continue to serve us well with our football team this year.”

Vikings WR Justin Jefferson passes Randy Moss for most receiving yards through first three seasons

Justin Jefferson continues to make history, this time supplanting a Minnesota Vikings great in the record books.

The 23-year-old wideout passed Hall of Fame pass catcher Randy Moss on Thursday night for the most receiving yards through a player's first three seasons. Jefferson entered Minnesota's 33-26 win over the New England Patriots with 4,109 career yards and beat Moss' three-year total (4,163) in the second quarter.

"It means a lot," Jefferson told reporters after the game of the achievement. "It means that my course of reaching to the Hall of Fame is near. But I'm just going to keep working, doing whatever it takes to make plays for this team. I love this team. I'd do anything for it. When the ball is in the air, it's mine."

Jefferson surpassed Moss on an astounding 37-yard grab with 5:08 remaining in the half and Minnesota down 13-10, giving him 77 yards on the day at the time. He finished with 139 yards (4,248 in his career) and a touchdown on nine receptions as the Vikings bounced back from last week's 40-3 defeat to move to 9-2.

"Last game, we didn't like the way we played, totally, all the way around," Jefferson explained. "This game we definitely had to come in and show people that last week just wasn't our week."

The Vikings star exited Thursday night with the most receiving yards in the league (1,232) ahead of Miami's Tyreek Hill (1,148) and Buffalo's Stefon Diggs (1,110), who played earlier in the day.

"We're playing great, we're playing great football," Jefferson said. "We just got to keep going, finish this season out, get to the playoffs and continue doing what we need to do."

Jefferson and the Vikings host the New York Jets next Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

7 kickers the Vikings should explore signing with Greg Joseph struggling

The Minnesota Vikings are still seeing issues with the kicker position. They beat the New England Patriots on Sunday night by a score of 33-26, but he missed another extra point, bringing his total missed on the year to six.

In his three years as a kicker, Joseph has ranked in missed extra points

    • 2020-3rd worst

    • 2021-2nd worst

    • 2022-worst
Fans and analysts have been begging for a new kicker but the options to get one aren’t talent-flush. Here are seven kickers that the Vikings should consider signing.

    Sam Ficken

Seibert is a former fifth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns and started the season as the kicker for the Detroit Lions. He was waived after playing three games for the Lions this season. In his career over four seasons, Seibert has made 44-55 field goals and 55-61 extra points.

    Ryan Santoso

The former University of Minnesota kicker and punter has not had a lot of experience kicking in the NFL but he has a big leg. He is 4-5 on field goals and 6-8 on extra points.

    Jose Borregales

This kicking thing in Minnesota needs addressed ASAP... Ive seen it too many times where the Vikings get burned on missed kicks. I dont understand what is going on with kicking for the Vikings... its been a problem for decades.

Vikings’ Andrew Booth having knee surgery today, recovery time not yet known

Vikings cornerback Andrew Booth is set for knee surgery, and it’s unclear how much time he’ll miss.

Doctors will determine by assessing Booth’s knee during the surgery which kind of procedure he needs, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Only then will they know whether Booth has a chance of returning this season.

The Vikings prioritized their secondary in this year’s draft, taking safety Lewis Cine in the first round and Booth in the second round. But Cine has already been lost for the season and now Booth may be as well.

Booth didn’t get any defensive snaps at all until Week 10, but he got his first start of the season in the Vikings’ Week 11 loss to the Cowboys. The Vikings were hoping Booth could make an impact down the stretch, but that is now in question.
