    Cardinals trade for Robbie Anderson

The Panthers sent Robbie Anderson to the locker room on Sunday and they sent him to a new team on Monday.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Panthers have traded Anderson to the Cardinals. There is no word on the compensation going back to Carolina at this point.

Anderson got into a shouting match with Panthers wide receivers coach Joe Dailey on the sideline in the first half of Sunday’s loss to the Rams and interim head coach Steve Wilks sent Anderson to the locker room during the second half. That wasn’t a good sign for his spot on a team that could be making a number of moves to add to their draft assets in the wake of Matt Rhule’s firing.

The Cardinals are getting DeAndre Hopkins back from suspension this week, but Hollywood Brown was in a walking boot after Sunday’s loss to the Seahawks and the move to add Anderson could be a sign that they expect Brown to miss a significant amount of time.

UPDATE 1:27 p.m. ET: The Panthers announced the trade and said they will receive “undisclosed draft compensation” in return for Anderson.

Report: Marquise Brown suffered potentially season-ending foot injury on Sunday

There’s now a little more context to the trade the Cardinals executed on Monday to bring in receiver Robbie Anderson from the Panthers.

Arizona receiver Marquise Brown suffered a potentially season-ending foot injury during Sunday’s loss to Seattle, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. But Brown is undergoing more tests to fully determine the extent of the injury.

Brown told reporters after the game, “The X-rays are good, so that’s the positive,” and would find out more on Monday. But apparently, the news he and the team received on Monday could see him out for the rest of the year.

Brown was in a walking boot after Sunday’s loss.

Acquired via trade from the Ravens in April, Brown was easily the Cardinals’ most effective offensive weapon. Through six games, he has 43 catches for 485 yards with three touchdowns.

Arizona will get DeAndre Hopkins back this week as he returns from his six-game suspension. But the Cardinals don’t have much time to get everyone ready, as the club faces the Saints on Thursday night.

A report on Monday said the Cardinals feared wide receiver Hollywood Brown’s season was over as a result of the foot injury he suffered on Sunday, but tests on Monday reportedly show that he avoided that fate.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that an MRI showed Brown suffered a small fracture in his foot that does not require surgery. He will go for a second opinion to confirm that diagnosis, but the current thinking is that he should miss around six weeks before being well enough to return.

Brown has 43 catches for 485 yards and three touchdowns this season

The Cardinals traded for Robbie Anderson on Monday and they also activated DeAndre Hopkins from the suspended list, so the receiving corps will look quite different once Brown gets back on the field.

Here are four things to watch for when the Chargers host the Broncos on Monday Night Football:

    1. Can Wilson and offense get things moving? I think we all recognize that the Denver offense has struggled so far this season. The Broncos’ losses have been largely a result of inefficient offensive play, led by a quarterback who doesn’t seem to have found his rhythm yet in Russell Wilson. Wilson has put up some of the worst numbers in his career in 2022, and the offense has been stagnant through five weeks, averaging only 15 points per game. One issue of particular concern is the Broncos’ red zone efficiency, where they rank last in the league. These issues getting the ball in the end zone culminated in last week’s touchdown-less loss to the Colts. With Wilson now revealed to also be dealing with a strained latissimus dorsi in his shoulder, the offense looks to be in a bad place coming into the matchup, so we’ll have to see whether it ends up being more of the same versus the Chargers, or whether the Broncos will find a way to put the injuries and scoring woes behind them and turn the corner.
    2. How will the Denver defense handle Herbert? The Chargers have put up big offensive numbers the last few weeks, scoring at least 30 points in each of their last two games. With the running game dormant for the most part (more on that in a minute), much of this offensive production was reliant on the passing game, and this has held up so far. Going into Week 6, Justin Herbert was second in the NFL in passing yards even despite playing through his earlier rib injury, and Los Angeles has a winning record to show for it. But Denver has one of the top defenses in the NFL this season, sitting in the top five in total, scoring and passing defenses. The Broncos' proficiency at keeping opposing teams out of the end zone has kept them in games when the offense couldn’t, as they have not allowed any team this season to record more than 200 total passing yards. So when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object, what happens? Will Herbert be able to navigate the pressure and continue to rack up the passing yards and touchdowns? Or will Denver stifle its opponent’s production and keep it a low-scoring affair?
    3. Can Denver get the run game going? With Wilson playing injured, it’s possible that the Broncos will have to rely more on their running backs, possibly creating a breakthrough opportunity. The Chargers’ run defense has been an Achilles' heel this season, allowing around 130 yards per game (25th in the league). If Denver can take advantage of that weakness, it could prove to be a big game on the ground. So far the Broncos’ rushing corps has suffered its fair share of issues, from Javonte Williams going out for the season with an ACL tear to Melvin Gordon’s fumbling issues, and they haven’t been able to put it all together. But with the possibility that they’ll be called upon more this week against a struggling defense, this could be a chance to find some yardage and make improvements.
    4. Can L.A. repeat Week 5 rushing numbers? The Chargers run game was virtually nonexistent to start the season but had a breakout performance in Week 5, largely due to Austin Ekeler. The veteran back had 173 rushing yards last week versus the Browns, scoring one rushing and one receiving TD in the win. Considering that Ekeler had been averaging 35 rushing yards per game before then, this was an encouraging sign that he was starting to hit his stride and could perform at last season’s level. And the rest of the team followed suit, putting up 235 total rushing yards, almost matching their season total of 256 yards from the first four games. Facing off against the Broncos' formidable defense, Ekeler and his teammates will face the task of proving that last week’s performance wasn’t a fluke, and that the improved running game is here to stay despite needing a few weeks to ramp up.

Monday Night Football: Chargers win ugly, defeat Broncos 19-16 in overtime

The Broncos and Chargers played an ugly Monday night game that had a fitting overtime end.

Los Angeles got a 19-16 victory with Dustin Hopkins‘ 39-yard field goal that went through the uprights with just 2:38 left in the extra frame.

But the Chargers only had that opportunity because of a muffed punt.

Rookie Montrell Washington muffed the return in overtime when he had one of his teammates stand right in front of him and start blocking an L.A. player just before the ball was to land in his arms. Chargers defensive back Deane Leonard came up with the loose ball at the Denver 28, and the game was all but over.

Bears sign Isaiah Coulter off practice squad, waive Ihmir Smith-Marsette

The Bears shuffled their wide receiver corps on Tuesday.

They announced that they have signed Isaiah Coulter to the active roster from the practice squad. They waived Ihmir Smith-Marsette in a corresponding move.

Coulter played in three games for the Bears last season, but only saw the field for 15 offensive snaps. He was targeted with one pass and did not catch it. Coulter also played in one game for the Texans in 2020.

Smith-Marsette joined the Bears as waiver claim from the Vikings in early September. He caught one pass for 15 yards in his six appearances with the team, but had it ripped out of his hands by former Minnesota teammate Cam Dantzler to end a Bears comeback bid in a 29-22 Week Four loss.
