Thursday Night Football: Bears come up short as Commanders win 12-7

The Bears were thisclose to pulling out a come-from-behind victory. Instead, the Commanders held on for a 12-7 victory.

    Both teams now are 2-4.

The Bears gained 392 yards. They scored seven points.

They went 0-for-3 in the red zone. In the first half, Jonathan Allen intercepted a tipped Justin Fields pass after the Bears reached the Washington 5; and Khalil Herbert was stopped at the line of scrimmage by Cole Holcomb and Montez Sweat on fourth-and-goal at the 1.

Then, there was the final drive.

On their next-to-last series, the Bears reached the Washington 48 with 2:34 remaining. But Fields’ pass intended for Ihmir Smith-Marsette fell incomplete on fourth-and-16. The Commanders reached the Chicago 30 on the ensuing possession, but Washington kicker Joey Slye hooked a 48-yard field goal.

The Bears’ final possession went 61 yards to get them back inside the Washington 5-yard line.

On third-and-four from the Washington 4, Fields threw up a pass to Dante Pettis, who somehow got two hands on the ball with defensive back Darrick Forrest all over him. Pettis could not, however, hold on.

That set up a fourth-down play.

Fields’ throw to Darnell Mooney would have been a touchdown if he had secured the ball initially. He juggled it, and when he finally pulled it in, Mooney was at the 1-yard line. (It appeared Mooney’s elbow might have touched out of bounds before he caught the ball, but the play was not reviewed. It was ruled a 3-yard catch to the Washington 1.)

Fields went 14-of-27 for 190 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Pettis scored the team’s only touchdown on a 40-yard reception. Fields ran for 88 yards on 12 carries as the Bears ran for 238 yards as a team.

Washington’s only touchdown came on a two-play, 6-yard drive, with Brian Robinson scoring his first career touchdown on a 1-yard run after Bears punt returner Velus Jones fumbled a punt that Christian Holmes recovered.

Carson Wentz completed 12 of 22 passes for 99 yards as Washington gained only 214 yards.

Allen had one of the Commanders’ five sacks as well as the interception, four tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup.

The only thing I can say, kinda, in Watson’s favor; Buzbee said pretty early on, there were LOTS more women who contacted his office, but they didn’t feel there was merit in their case. This could very well be one of those other cases he didn’t take.

Darnell Mooney: If I just catch the damn ball the first time, we win the game

At the end of Thursday’s game between the Commanders and Bears, Chicago had one last shot from the 4-yard line.

Quarterback Justin Fields threw a jump ball to receiver Darnell Mooney on the right side of the end zone. Mooney went up to grab it, but bobbled the ball. He was ruled down at the 1-yard line for a turnover on downs and Washington escaped with a 12-7 victory.

After the game, Mooney lamented the fact that he didn’t secure the ball outright.

“If I just catch the damn ball the first time, we win the game,” Mooney said, via Josh Schrock of NBCSportsChicago.com.

“At that period of time, I’m literally just telling myself, ‘Just please, give me this ball. Give me this ball,'” Mooney added. “I just got to close the game for us. If I want to be that player, I want to be that guy for our team, I got to make that play.”

While Mooney’s bobbled catch was Chicago’s last offensive play, the receiver was far from the Bears’ biggest offensive issue. The team was 0-of-3 in the red zone, with all three possessions netting zero points.

The Bears scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Fields to receiver Dante Pettis.

A fifth-round pick in 2020, Mooney caught seven of his 12 targets for 68 yards on Thursday night. He has 17 receptions for 241 yards this season.

Both games were atrocious, but the fourth quarter of Generals vs Bears was actually entertaining for anyone other than Bears fans. So I'll go with Broncos-Colts as the more painful one for "neutral" viewers. It also went to overtime, extending the agony.

I'd actually recommend watching the NFL-N replay of Bears-Generals... as long as you fast forward and only watch the fourth quarter. Definitely skip the entire first half - that was even worse than Colts-Broncos.

Big takeaway from watching the Colts last week: wtf were the coaches doing putting a third round rookie at left tackle? The guy got torched early and often, committing four penalties in the first half alone on top of getting beaten like a drum. He killed two of their first half possessions all by himself. (He had help killing the other two.) If Matt Ryan wanted a bad offensive line, no running game (one RB already out, the second lost to concussion after three plays) and guys dropping his passes, he should have stayed in Atlanta.

Big takeaway from watching the Bears this week: are the coaches SERIOUSLY trying to turn Justin Fields into a classic pocket passer? WTF?????

Reminder: NFL-N rebroadcasts the Thursday night games. It was on twice overnight, and it will air one more time at 3pm Eastern. You've been warned...

If you're up for a good comedy, the fourth quarter is great. Both teams do their best to throw the game away, and it comes down to a finish that would make Seahawks and Titans fans cringe.

Avoid the first half though. A former co-worker would have said it was worse than masturbating with a cheese grater - less entertaining and even more painful.

Tom Brady fined $11,139 for kicking Grady Jarrett - ProFootballTalk

It's not entirely Jerome Boger's fault that he called the bogus roughing the passer penalty that gift-wrapped the win for Tampa, because the league actually instructs refs to throw the flag when in doubt. But Boger also missed TWO personal fouls by Brady himself for kicking at Jarrett - including on that play. So Boger called Jarrett for a bogus foul while at the same time letting Brady get away with a personal foul of his own. That's a 30-yard swing (plus the yardage from the nullified sack) and a change of possession wiped out by one ref turning a blind eye in favor of the marquee player.

The league sent a video to all teams justifying the OTHER dicey roughing the passer call from last weekend, but not this one. And now the fine to Brady makes it very clear that Boger simply missed the entire play.

Minkah Fitzpatrick, Pat Freiermuth among those ruled out for Steelers

The Steelers were already facing an uphill battle to defeat the Buccaneers on Sunday.

With the release of Friday’s injury report, the climb just got that much steeper.

Pittsburgh has ruled out safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (knee), cornerback Cameron Sutton (hamstring), cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring), cornerback Levi Wallace (concussion), tight end Pat Freiermuth (concussion), and defensive end Demarvin Leal (knee).

Fitzpatrick played through his knee injury last week. Sutton was on the field for last week’s loss to Buffalo with his hamstring injury but did not finish the contest. Witherspoon has been out since suffering his hamstring injury in Week Three. Freiermuth suffered his concussion against the Bills. And Leal was added to the injury report on Friday when he did not practice.

Pittsburgh does not have any questionable our doubtful players.

The Steelers are still looking for their first win without edge rusher T.J. Watt. The club is now 0-8 when playing without him since drafting him in 2017.

Ravens rule out Rashod Bateman, Justin Houston

The Ravens ruled out Rashod Bateman for Sunday’s game against the Giants. It will be the second consecutive game Bateman has missed since injuring his foot in the Oct. 2 game against the Bills.

Bateman still leads the wideouts with 243 receiving yards.

This week, the Ravens again will lean on Devin Duvernay and tight end Mark Andrews.

The Ravens also ruled out outside linebacker Justin Houston, who will miss a third game in a row with his groin injury. His two sacks still lead the team.

Offensive guard Ben Cleveland (foot) will miss a second consecutive week after not practicing all week, but coach John Harbaugh has hope Cleveland can return next week.

Running back Justice Hill is doubtful to return this week after pulling his hamstring in Week 4 against the bills. Hill practiced on a limited basis Thursday and Friday.

“He’s doing great, and [we’re] just going to see how he’s feeling,” Harbaugh said, via Ryan Mink of the team website. “He felt pretty good a couple of days right after it, so that was always a good sign. The day or two after was encouraging, so it’s just been progressing since then.”

Hill leads the Ravens’ running backs with 6.6 yards per carry this season.

J.K. Dobbins could see more opportunities this week.

Battery lawsuit is filed against Alvin Kamara

Saints running back Alvin Kamara officially faces both civil and criminal charges for an incident that occurred in Las Vegas, on Pro Bowl weekend.

Darnell Greene, Jr. filed suit against Kamara on Friday, in Louisiana.

The lawsuit alleges that Kamara repeatedly punched Greene, even as Greene tried to flee. He allegedly suffered “severe” injuries to his neck, back, shoulder, knees, and face. The lawsuit includes photos of Greene, following the attack.

The lawsuit seeks at least $5 million in compensatory damages and at least $5 million in punitive damages, for assault and battery.

The lawsuit includes alleged quotes from Kamara. He allegedly said things such as, “I connected with the [expletive]’s jaw so hard,” and “that shit sounded like the [expletive] got hit with a baseball bat.” Kamara also allegedly talked about the incident in a vehicle after the incident.

It’s unclear from the lawsuit how the quotes were obtained.

Greene is represented by Tony Buzbee, who has handled more than 20 civil lawsuits against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Kamara faces felony battery charges in Nevada. That puts him in line for a baseline suspension of six games under the Personal Conduct Policy, if he’s ultimately deemed to be guilty of assault. Given that photos and videos of the incident exist, Kamara will have a hard time avoiding civil and criminal responsibility for the situation.

When does this thing go to criminal trial? I know it's been put back once/

  18. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

A hearing in Saints running back Alvin Kamara‘s battery case set has been rescheduled for the third time.

David Charns of KLAS reports that the hearing has been reset for November 9. Lawyers for Kamara and three other defendants, including Chiefs cornerback Chris Lammons, asked the judge for more time to meet with Las Vegas prosecutors in an attempt to resolve the case without going to a trial.

Kamara, Lammons, and the other defendants were not in attendance. The four men are charged with battery for an incident outside of a Las Vegas nightclub in February.

Kamara and Lammons are subject to NFL discipline under the Personal Conduct Policy, but any penalty will likely come after the case has been resolved and the latest delay makes it less likely that will happen before the end of the 2022 season.

The Colts will be without their top two running backs on Sunday against the Jaguars.

Both starting running back Jonathan Taylor and No. 2 back Nyheim Hines were officially declared out by the Colts today. Taylor had been listed as questionable with an ankle injury and Hines had been listed as questionable with a concussion.

Taylor leads the Colts with 81 carries for 328 yards this season. Hines is the Colts’ top receiver out of the backfield with 18 catches for 118 yards.

Deon Jackson was the only other running back on the 53-man roster, so the Colts elevated two practice squad running backs, Phillip Lindsay and D’Vonte Price, to the active roster for tomorrow’s game.

The Colts also signed wide receiver Keke Coutee to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and waived tackle Luke Tenuta.

Williams has been activated from injured reserve after missing the first five games of the season with a hamstring injury. He’ll play tomorrow against the Patriots.

Last year Williams played 16 games, with eight starts.

The Browns also elevated cornerback Herb Miller and wide receiver Chester Rogers from the practice squad.
