It's really all about him isn't it? 3 games in and he's been historically bad, but the Bears fan in me is saying "he can turn this shit around!" while the other Bears fan in me is saying, "man, how many times have you seen this shit before" There were two vids on tape that I thought were interesting: - QB School, he didn't do the full game, but he's had some other good vids. dline recommended JT O'Sullivan a while back and then this tweet came up for me, heh. - TTNL also analyzes that same play and a few others, I don't pay money to get their full game stuff. 3 games in, and progress has been in the wrong direction. It's still early and we have the rest of the season at minimum. Hopefully when he starts to get a hold of the playbook his clock will speed up and we can start seeing him make some plays. I spent some time on Reddit and CCS, and holy fuck our fanbase. He's either pure crap and a bust, or has every excuse under the sun. It can be true that Mustipher sucks AND Fields has played like crap.
The tape never lies. Watching shit like this year after from our QBs and now I've already run out of hope for the current one.
There is nothing to point to Fields being a legitimate NFL QB other than hope. Every step forward in his progression has been followed by more steps backward. Coming out of college Fields was the Anti Trubisky. Fields’s resume is chock full of grade A top performances against the best college football had to offer. A strong armed highly accurate winner on the biggest stage vs a one year starter from a basketball school. As QB’s in the NFL though they have a lot in common. Both QB’s will show spurts of looking like a real NFL QB surrounded by bottom of the barrel garbage. Because of Field’s college resume I still believe he has the ability to be a very good QB in the NFL but time is running out. With every game that he flounders about that belief dwindles.I’m not saying he needs to set the world on fire. He could start be not being THE worst.
Fuck sake! Just flushed 40mins on a post, some of which was on this very subject. I could've just watched this, dropped varder a like and saved the time.
I figure this thread we can keep for "Fields-specific" thoughts as the season goes on. Found this on reddit: https://i.imgur.com/UcErMLK.jpg From the original post: I was looking for him, and the OP had to update the graph to include him down there at the bottom.
I liked his previous week answer taking the blame, but by the same token short of some, "we need to find the whys" there's not a great answer to the question.
Not a great answer to the question. Not a great question. Fields best way of handling it would've been to say that question should be directed to someone above him ie the OC. Which it should.
So, we all knew this OL was going to be bad. Be honest - did we think it was going to be this bad? How is Mustipher still out there? Why is Reiff on the bench when Braxton Jones is clearly out of his depth? I know this is the Justin Fields thread, but this is pertinent. There is not a single dropback where both he as a QB and we as fans are expecting the line to protect him properly. That expectation is a big part of the problem.
The giants also blitzed a ton, and it feels like the Bears didn't pick any of those up. That's going to account for some of the pressures. Some of those nothing could be done sure, but on others I'm sure there had to be a hot route/quick out to beat the blitz. If not, Getsy really sucks. Didn't we actually execute a screen successfully this past game? Does that count in the pressures stat I wonder? I don't love the notion though of "if we just exclude pressure plays" though. All QBs stats are going to look much better if you take out all the plays where they faced pressure. "If you exclude the plays where Baker Mayfield faced pressure, he was 10 for 10!" would not be an argument that would convince me of anything really.
Getsy has Fields making the calls / reads on blitzes, without real help from his linemen (that's how it appears to me). That's not the position I want to put my young QB in with a new offense, a bad OL, in his second year, and with a skill that was a weakness for him in the first place. Just as a commentary, not necessarily an excuse / condemnation of Fields.
2022 NFL QB Power Rankings: Patrick Mahomes reigns supreme, Geno Smith enters top 20 ahead of Week 5 "At this point, the only reason Fields isn't a bottom-five starter here is because his sheer athleticism demands we account for his upside. No, the Bears haven't set him up well, but his efficiency through the air has been wholly unreliable. (-1)" Heh, sounds like our entire debate in a nutshell. And to be fair, it could be worse, look at the QBs below him. How'd you like to be choosing between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold right now? Oof.
This is something i've been wondering about. I never see anyone call out the Mike. Not Fields. The C can do that if they're any good, our isn't. Not sure if ever seen protections slid over either. Suggests Fields is extremely limited at reading Defenses pre snap. One more thing to worry about.
Something to think about for the upcoming game. Assuming the OL doesnt shit the bed beyond all measure, Fields should have opportunities. We'll see.
The Giants pass defense is nothing to write home about either, they just blitz a lot. That was enough. The Vikings have also faced some pretty good passing offenses which is going to contribute. It would not surprise me in the slightest to see Fields running for his life again. But the Vikings are one of those teams the Bears seemingly always have a chance against, so we will see.
So, I saw it in the replays, and was confirmed by a recent episode of Kreutz / McKie's podcast - the OL doesn't know what they're seeing and isn't communicating. Meanwhile, Fields doesn't know what he's seeing and isn't communicating. So the offense is lining up, and then the defense just gets to tee off. There isn't enough adjustment to protections. It's why NYG blitzed all game - it was working. Olin and Big Cat talked about the cross blitz, specifically - something that, at least to my knowledge, you can really hammer a defense on if it's picked up right - NYG would come with a cross blitz, the line would blow their assignments (coming back to the Mustipher topic), and so they'd just keep doing it. And it worked all game. This OL is getting worked with consistency. Teams are going to keep bringing bodies until the Bears' offense proves they can make them pay.
Oh, I don't think there's any "might" about it. This is the worst OL by a wide margin, at least in pass protection. Whitehair going down isn't going to make that any better. Best we can hope for is that Jenkins, Borom, and Jones continue to grow. We know that Musitpher is a lost cause, and I have no idea why in christ they're having Patrick play LG when the guy should be coming in to replace Mustipher. Is it just that we literally don't have another guard to play? Because shit, sign me and I'll play LG - can't be any worse than Mustipher is at C right now. I'm just shy of 200, have a bad back, a fistula that just won't quit, and played center at practice for a single day in high school because everyone else was hurt. I am confident I can do no worse than Mustipher, presently.
