Packers’ defense wins the battle of Aaron Rodgers vs. Tom Brady

It was a matchup of two legendary quarterbacks, but it was not an offensive explosion.

The Packers beat the Buccaneers 14-12 on a day when Aaron Rodgers didn’t do a lot, but Tom Brady did even less.

Rodgers completed 27 of 35 passes for 255 yards, with two touchdowns, one interception and one sack. Those are decent numbers, but the two touchdowns were on the Packers’ first two possessions, and after that it was all the Bucs’ defense shutting down the Packers’ offense.

But the Packers’ defense did an even better job against Brady and the Bucs’ offense. The Bucs didn’t score their first touchdown of the game until just 14 seconds were left in the fourth quarter, and after the Bucs got a delay of game before the two-point conversion, Brady threw incomplete and the Packers’ defense preserved the win.

With the Packers’ win, both teams are now 2-1 and in good shape in the playoff race. It wouldn’t be at all surprising if these teams meet again in the playoffs — and if this game turns out to be the reason the January rematch is on the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field, and not sunny Tampa.

Michael Thomas went out of the Saints game with a bad ankle. But, WHICH ANKLE WAS IT?? The one that had two surgeries on it, or the other one?

Ssshhhhhh! Jeezus, Jean, you wanna wake up whatever Urban cult members there are, around here? We've gotten 3 weeks in without anyone popping their head up. Let's just admire this new Jags team, and pretend like last year never happened...

Not a good week for injuries around the league. Already seems like a "healthiest team wins" kind of season.

Thanks. It's nice to know Atlanta will NOT be the first team to go 0-17, or at least not this year.

Frustrating game to watch though. It should be incredibly obvious to the Falcons braintrust that the defensive line needs help after losing Vincent Taylor (and others). But they seem content to keep getting gashed up front.

Sunday Night Football: Broncos do just enough to eek out 11-10 win over 49ers

Broncos punter Corliss Waitman and 49ers punter Mitch Wishnowsky combined for 17 punts and 838 yards. The two offenses combined for 528 yards on 122 plays.

It was that kind of night.

Denver finally put together a touchdown drive on its 12th possession, going 80 yards in 12 plays to take an 11-10 lead with 4:10 remaining. Melvin Gordon‘s 1-yard run turned out to be the game-winner.

The one-point win left the Broncos with plenty of questions but with a 2-1 record, tying the Chiefs atop the AFC West. Denver has scored 43 points in three games. The 49ers fell to 1-2.

The 49ers had three turnovers, including Jeff Wilson‘s fumble with 1:05 remaining, and they went 1-for-10 on third down.

They were 0-for-9 on third down until a 5-yard completion to Jauan Jennings on third-and-two at their own 32 with 2:49 left. Two plays, later, though, Jimmy Garoppolo tried to hit Deebo Samuel in heavy traffic, and Kareem Jackson tipped it and Jonas Griffith intercepted it.

Garoppolo went 7-of-10 for 84 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter. He finished 18-of-29 for 211 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Garoppolo also took a safety, running out of the end zone with Mike Purcell bearing down on him, and lost a fumble.

The Broncos had their own problems on offense, gaining 261 yards.

Russell Wilson went 20-of-33 for 184 yards and ran for 17 yards on six carries.

NFL’s Pro Bowl to be replaced by skills competition, flag football game

The National Football League said on Monday it has decided to replace its annual Pro Bowl exhibition match between All-Stars with a week-long skills competition and a flag football game starting next year in Las Vegas.

The new event is being called “The Pro Bowl Games” and will replace the traditional tackle football game with competitions between the AFC and NFC culminating in a February 5 game of flag football at the home of the Las Vegas Raiders.

The NFL, which is part of an effort to have flag football added to the program for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, said the new format will allow players to showcase their football and non-football skills in unique competitions in a fun way.

The last Pro Bowl was held opposite the Beijing Winter Olympics and was the least-watched in 16 years as it drew 6.69 million viewers across all platforms.

While flag football looks similar to tackle football, with passing and receiving, there is little protective equipment needed with play stopping when a defender pulls a cloth flag from the waist of an opponent.

Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning and his Omaha Productions company will help to shape programming and promote content throughout the week and also be a key part of the coaching staff for the flag football game.

The NFL said the changes were made after feedback from players, teams and fans about reimagining the Pro Bowl.

The Pro Bowl, which featured the league’s best players not involved in the following week’s Super Bowl, was largely played at less than full speed by players who were not interested in risking potential injury for an exhibition.

This is what stands out to me... FLAG FOOTBALL as an Olympic sport?? What?? Isn't there a limit to the sports allowed? So, if they were to add this, wouldn't another sport be let go?

Remember the '70s TV show called "Battle of the Network Stars or Super Stars"? This sounds like the same thing. Pro athletes doing stuff they don't normally do. Howard Cosell droning on and on about something and a bunch of pretty girls in skimpy swimsuits. I'll pass.

I remember a long, LONG time ago when an NFL team would play a college all-star team. At least those were interesting.
