Oh yeah, not disagreeing with you, either. If anything, I think your term "soured" didn't really go far enough. Hard not to look at this objectively and believe Stefanksi ever wanted him in the first place. The injury-plagued 2021 season was an easy out for moving on. The trade request was icing on the cake for the whole mess and the reason they got so little in return.
Look at it however you want. Mayfield's immaturity, and division within the locker room is why he's gone... Browns have moved on... Good luck to Bake, just not week #1
By chance SAS did you see the Tomlin interview with Ryan Clark? I thought it was really interesting that Tomlin acknowledged they weren't investing what they use to at the QB position and would be able to spread that money around. I've always believed that was part of being a head coach but I believe most fans think the front office handles the finances, the coaches just coach the guys in uniform. The reason I ask is because I believe Stefanski determined early on that Baker wasn't going to be a guy they would give a second contract to. So in that sense you're probably right that he didn't "want him in the first place". But I think he would have been perfectly content trying to win with him as long as he played the position the way Stefanski wanted him to. And the instant, Mayfield didn't do that it was over for the head coach. He was ready to move on long before they ever had a shot at Watson.
It was either that or the 15 times they had to pull him into the Principals office. No doubt Stefanski hated everything about Baker.
That was probably the nail in the coffin but I don't think that was the initial motivation. The analytics guys don't stop analyzing once you're on the team. Heck, they probably take it up a notch and the analytics on Baker are not good. The concerns coming out of an air raid system and how that manifests at the pro level have been there all along. The guy just doesn't read the field well, doesn't play under pressure well, has trouble with the tighter passing windows (linemen splits) at the NFL level. In obvious passing situations he hasn't been good. Long windup, lack of touch at times. The Browns know all this and more. They weren't giving him a 2nd contract. Baker sensed it and let it effect everyone.
I should amend this to say they weren't giving him a market value 2nd contract. They probably would have been content to give him a mid-level deal without long term commitments to see if they could coach him into what they wanted.
not sure I agree with that. QB's come out of all kinds of college "systems". So how do you think he will do in Carolina with CMc?
well.. ok… so maybe Deshaun goes to places women work and flashes his penis at them, occasionally touching their hand with it when they don’t want him to… but at least he doesn’t dance in the locker room. Childish response? Maybe, but as long as these reports keep making their way to the Browns board, I think it is apropos.
Very. I posted it because many of us would like some insight into wth happened with Baker and the Browns. How did it go down hill so quickly? This is the Browns board, right? It's a report about Baker Mayfield being immature and difficult to coach during his tumultous time in Cleveland. In particular his icy cold relationship with Kevin Srtefanski. Which btw, I don't think surprises many people. No mention of any dancing. Sorry you are still hurt about the whole break-up with Bake, but where would you expect to read that, on the Vikings board?
Panthers OC McAdoo ripped Mayfield back in 2018 Carolina’s QB situation hasn’t looked right since Newton got hit helmet-first in the throwing shoulder by Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt midway through the 2018 season and it all went south. Since then, the Panthers have started luminaries like Kyle Allen, Taylor Heinicke, Will Grier, Teddy Bridgewater and P.J. Walker, Darnold and Newton 2.0 (batteries and long throws not included). And while they’ve all had some moments, none of them have won consistently. Mayfield didn’t win consistently in Cleveland, either, but he won a lot more than Darnold did with the New York Jets and Carolina. His star power isn’t that important, but it won’t hurt for a Carolina franchise that struggles to keep its own fans in their own seats. Mayfield’s relationship with McAdoo will be worth watching. In 2018, McAdoo told the New York Post he thought Mayfield was the sixth-best QB in the draft. Among his comments were these: “I didn’t see a lot of pro-style football in his college tape. And if you’re short (Mayfield is listed at 6-foot-1), you have to be able to make up for it some way, somehow, and personality doesn’t do that. I didn’t think he was a great athlete. This guy is kinda like a pocket quarterback that is short and with small hands, that’s what I worry about.’’ Four years later, McAdoo and Mayfield will try to revitalize their own careers, as well as Rhule’s and the Panthers franchise as a whole. No pressure there, right? Source Scott Petrak Brownszone
