NFL analyst believes Andrew Booth Jr. will be 'stud quickly' for Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are hoping Andrew Booth Jr. plays a big role in kick-starting the turnaround for a defensive backfield that gave up the fifth-most passing yards in 2021.

CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso believes the second-round draft pick out of Clemson University has the potential to do exactly that when he steps onto the field in purple as a rookie.

During a mandatory minicamp preview, Booth was listed among possible immediate impact players taken after the first round of the 2022 NFL draft.

    Trapasso wrote:

“Booth was a first-round talent all day. The vaunted injury red flag precipitated his plummet to the second round. What I kept going back to with Booth during the pre-draft process was this — he has the feet and suddenness of a slot corner and the disruptive length and acrobatic ball skills of a tall outside corner. Learning from Patrick Peterson will do wonders for any rough edges of Booth’s game. He’s going to be a stud, quickly, in Minnesota.”

Booth is still working his way back from hernia surgery, and the expectation has always been that he’d start amping up his workouts heading into training camp later in the summer.

The truth remains that the Vikings were willing to trade back up in the draft to take him with the No. 42 overall pick. That isn’t a move general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah makes if the team didn’t have supreme confidence in his ability to help them win right out of the gates.

Opposing quarterbacks learned very quickly not to throw in Booth’s direction in college. A defensive back doesn’t need a bazillion interceptions and pass deflections to prove he can play the game at the next level. It’s even better when he strikes enough fear in the hearts of offenses to not even consider trying him, period.

Granted, quarterbacks are going to steadily test Booth in the NFL, and the hope is that he’ll be seasoned enough early in his career to make it tough on those teams. It helps playing opposite of a legend like Peterson, who could become key in Booth’s rapid development, if he comes into the situation with a sponge mentality.

That’s soaking up as much knowledge as possible and putting it to good use on Sundays.

After closing the curtains on organized team activities, the Minnesota Vikings finish things off with mandatory minicamp this week.

They kick-started the festivities on Tuesday with the team gathering on the practice field for another week of work. This is the time where we get the best glimpse of where things stand ahead of training camp later this summer.

The pads haven’t come on yet. So these practices are still more about drilling positioning and technique. But it doesn’t mean things aren’t getting competitive out there between the offense and defense, along with the ongoing position battles on the roster.

Here are some notes and highlights from Day 1.

Last week, it was revealed that Ihmir Smith-Marsette would miss the rest of the spring practices with a “lower leg” injury. Well, the second-year receiver showed up to the first day of minicamp in a walking boot.

The hope is that he’ll be back on the field by the time training camp rolls around, but it’s obviously something worth monitoring moving forward.

K.J. Osborn was also held out of practice with an undisclosed injury after missing the tail-end of OTAs last week. With Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen owning the top-two spots on the receiver depth chart, this would be a a great time for someone else to shine in that No. 3 or No. 4 role.

    Offensive line shuffling
You never want to read too deeply into things this early, but there’s clearly some substance behind Jesse Davis continuing to take the starting reps at right guard.

The former Miami Dolphin could be working his way towards making it his permanent spot in the lineup. Granted, Chris Reed is also deep in on the competition as well.

Speaking of competition, center Garrett Bradbury also needs to be worried about Reed. When talking with the media, via the Pioneer Press’ Chris Tomasson, offensive line coach Chris Kuper acknowledged the competition brewing, even though Bradbury remains out in front for now.

“They’re all pushing each other,” said Kuper. “Garrett’s taken every rep with the ones. He’s been doing a great job. Those things get sorted out when we get pads on… in camp”

    Offense clicking early
The good thing about this offense is the naturally built-in chemistry between quarterback Kirk Cousins and his receivers. And boy, doesn’t he have two great ones to work with?

Jefferson and Thielen were on the field making plays all day on Tuesday. It’s clear the dynamic duo will continue to pose a big threat for opposing defenses. Coach Kevin O’Connell is sinking his teeth into the offense, and it’s showing right out of the gates.

The unit especially looked sharp in the two-minute drill, where Cousins marched the team nearly 50 yards down the field with supreme confidence. That’s the sort of effort that wins football games.

Kirk Cousins admits Ed Donatell's defense making practice 'difficult'

Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Ed Donatell came in with the goal to install a defensive scheme that’s hard to decipher at the line of scrimmage. If anyone needed a clue on how it’s working, just ask Kirk Cousins.

During a media session on Wednesday afternoon, the Vikings quarterback spoke about what practice has been like when going up against the team’s new-look defense.

The best word he used to describe it was “muddy.” It’s a clouded picture every time he’s under center and the ball is snapped.

“It’s really muddy. So when you drop back, you don’t quite know what you’re getting, said Cousins. “Obviously as a quarterback—but at any position on offense—you want to know what you’re getting. And they’re doing a good job with disguise, making everything look the same. …I think it’s a great scheme, and they do a great job. It just makes practice difficult.”

Donatell’s defense is utilizing a hybrid scheme with 3-4 and 4-3 looks.

The unit is aiming to disguise their true intentions pre-snap. As veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson explains it, they’re “stealing a second” from opposing quarterbacks.

Cousins might feel like minutes have been stolen from him by the end of minicamp. Even the slightest bit of defensive praise is good news for a Vikings team that consistently got lit up on the defensive side of the ball last season.

Along with adding veteran cornerback Chandon Sullivan, the team rebooted the secondary with a splash of youth with rookies Lewis Cine, Andrew Booth Jr. and Akayleb Evans. They also went out and added reinforcements to the defensive front with two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Za’Darius Smith, rookie Brian Asamoah and defensive tackle Harrison Phillips.

If Donatell’s defense takes root and stands its ground, the Vikings could be a legitimate contender in 2022.

I think the wr's are ok very concerned about the TE position Irv Smith Jr seems like he's always getting hurt losing Tyler Conklin hurt!!!!! If does get hurt who's the back up

If Baker Mayfield becomes a Vikings and that's a big IF how will he just being around effect everybody else,I mean Capt Kirk I just don't see Baker Mayfield being satisfied as a backup QB...rumors rumors its that time of year

I think this is the biggest crock of a rumor currently floating. How does trading for a QB with 1 year left on his contract and obviously sitting behind incumbent Kirk make sense? Answer: It doesn't.

NOW, if the rumors are based on the Browns cutting Mayfield, then getting a Mayfield as an OBVIOUS backup to Kirk at league minimum would make sense in the rumor mill, but as you stated, Mayfield is not going to want to be a backup and he would have opportunities elsewhere to be a one year starter to earn a bigger contract opportunity in 2023.

I think the Vikings can be written off the rumor board for Mayfield.

    My two cents..

Being that Julio Jones is a free agent should the Vikings make a play for him?

I dont know if they could afford another WR at this time. Im concerned about the TE position to be honest. Sure hope Irv Smith has a great season under KOC.
