2022 Collaborative Mock Draft

    Since a lot of this mock is about experimenting to see what works for future mocks, some observations so far:

    Starting it on Thursday afternoon / evening instead of this morning didn't seem to do any harm. I don't know if it's actually better than starting first thing in the morning, but it didn't hurt. And I do think I like cutting back from 16 hours a day.

    (We'll see later on how well the 15 minute window for the later rounds works. I apologize in advance if it turns out to be a disaster, but we really didn't have a choice - even at 16 hours a day, we would have had to start Monday morning to fit in the full draft with 30 minute windows. So it was either cut back the time per pick, cut the draft down to 3 or 5 rounds, or have it go past the start of the real draft. Since we're not doing autopicks, I went with the shorter time per pick.)

    I'm a biased opinion, but I think not needing approval for trades works. Personally, I trust everyone here to do what you think is the right thing to do for your team and to make decisions that fit your team's circumstances.

    (My reasoning for not requiring approval has always been that weird things do happen in the real draft. I claim that by doing more to make a mock allegedly more realistic, we're actually making it LESS realistic. Big trades happen. Bad trades happen. Bad picks happen. I say it's more realistic just to let it be and laugh when Mike Ditka puts on the dreadlock wig after trading away his entire draft. And it has been forgotten by history, but even that trade worked to some extent. New Orleans won the division the following year.)

    I'm strongly leaning towards ditching the extra "confirmed" post for trades - like, immediately. Everyone here knows what they're doing, so it doesn't seem to be necessary. Any objections?

    The only remaining question along those lines is knowing who has what future picks. I think I can take care of that by putting together a list and adding it to the spreadsheet as a reference.

    Lol. It also fits with my other big goal - creating a draft format that can almost run itself once it's underway. (You might have noticed just above the spreadsheet that Lyman named it "Auto-pilot draft".)

    Doing away with the third person confirmation post helps, as it means a few night owls or early birds can pull off a trade at 2am or 6am even if no one else is online.

    I gotta give the kid credit... The move by turf_toe to get Mayfield looks even more impressive now, considering his top two QB preference's in this draft both came off the board before Seattle even got to pick at #9. Well done. Then landing Charles Cross was like icing on the cake. Pretty good start for the Seahawks.

    The draft broke in a positive way for him and he really took advantage by being aggressive on Baker in the first place. He's got his QB and an OT in place. Those are... somewhat important chips.

    Just trying to help out Underdog here...

    15 of the 19 participants have posted since he asked about trade offers.

    Are any of the following on and/or want to offer him a trade? It's now been 4 hours since he asked you all to be quick about offering him trades... so..

    @matthewwillson29 (next pick #31)
    @turf_toe (next pick #27)
    @Lyman (next pick #44)
    @gidion72 (next pick #102, probably out of the running)

    These are the only ones that haven't posted since the offer... Just trying to help a brother out.

    Well I guess I meant before I got sidetracked by checking out of my hotel and driving home but I didn’t really think it was a word that required a definition.

    Anyway moot point since nobody made an offer so Pats select

    DB Dax Hill, Michigan

    He's a guy I like. This is earlier then I expected -- I am curious if he is going to be one of those late rising safeties that always seem to go right about here or not...

    Hopefully corner first then move to safety after McCourty goes.

    I’ve seen him in this range pretty consistently and Bill has gone to the UM well quite a bit lately.

    Agreed. Safety is box of chocolates. Seems like the mocks and prospect rankings on the major sites always have late swings for safeties, as if nobody can really make up their mind what the true value is for that position.

    I guess maybe it depends on defensive schemes and what's popular at the time. In a "Tampa Two" system, for example, getting the right guys at safety is more important than who you have at cornerback.

    And in a 3-4 defense the CB becomes real important. Your right, I agree... different schemes will dictate the position of importance come draft time based on the significance of the position/scheme.

    I think this is a BIG issue right now. No one seems to understand what the value of safety is. (me included) With CB values sky rocketing the last couple of years with the big back to front approach becomming more poplar it seems weird to me that people haven't been recognizing that building back to front also means safeties...

    Take Hamilton for example. I know Tim doesn't love him the way some do -- but if he is REALLY one of the top 5 most talented players... then why the hell would he fall out of the top 10? Having the right safety can be transformational. I think the real question is... where is that line? Do they need to be Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu for the value to be there? Bob Sanders was 100% a difference maker is that the mark? Like what is it that makes a safety more valuable or less valuable. To me it's the ability to be trusted in single high. If you have the range, instincts and smarts for me to leave you up there alone... it let's me do a lot of different things with my defense.

    And here is why I have no idea what the value of a safety is. I hate trying to watch DB's and safeties are even worse because if they are doing what *I* want them to do... they are not on the screen like 70% of the time lol.
