Trade Kellen Mond to a team that will at least give him a chance or trade him for a draft pick don't just let him walk out the door cause have no idea what he can or cannot do the Vikings did him wrong, just can't believe that Shaun Mannion is still on the roster this draft will be very INTERESTING

 

EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings are mourning the loss of Doug Sutherland, a member of the Purple People Eaters and 50 Greatest Vikings, who passed away Tuesday.

Vikings Owner/Chairman Zygi Wilf and Owner/President Mark Wilf released the following statement:

"Doug Sutherland was one of our proudest Legends. His humble nature did not allow for him to talk much about his own playing career, but Doug was a key member of some of the best defenses in NFL history and three Super Bowl teams. Doug was also the consummate teammate after football. He was one of the most active members of Vikings Legends events and didn't miss a chance to help out at a community event or lend a hand where needed. Our thoughts are with Doug's friends and family."

Sutherland, 73, first joined the Vikings through a trade with the Saints in August 1971, playing for Pro Football Hall of Fame Head Coach Bud Grant, a fellow native of Superior, Wisconsin.

A relentless work ethic eventually helped Sutherland add to an elite defensive line. He started 90 of the 138 regular-season games he played for Minnesota, the fourth-highest total of appearances by a Vikings defensive tackle behind John Randle, Kevin Williams and Alan Page. Sutherland played in three of the Vikings four Super Bowls with starts in IX and XI, but the climb wasn't without a winding path.

Sutherland arrived in Minnesota having played middle linebacker and guard for New Orleans, who had drafted him out of Wisconsin-Superior in the 14th round of the 1970 NFL Draft with the 348th overall pick.

Jullian Taylor signing with Vikings



Defensive lineman Jullian Taylor will try to kickstart his playing career in Minnesota this season.

Taylor’s agent announced that he has agreed to terms with the Vikings.


Taylor last appeared in a game during the 2019 season. He tore his ACL in a Week 13 loss to the Ravens and then went on the PUP list at the start of the 2020 season. The 49ers eventually waived him off of that list and he spent time with the Titans last offseason before being waived in June.

Taylor was a 2018 seventh-round pick — Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was working for the 49ers at the time — and he had 16 tackles and a fumble recovery in 12 appearances over his first two seasons.

Its basically a depth move anyway... hopefully he stays healthy standing on the side-lines.

 

Kirk Cousins on extension: Mindset was to be here, I’d like to retire as a Viking



There was speculation about quarterback Kirk Cousins leaving the Vikings when the offseason got underway, but Cousins ended that by agreeing to a one-year extension with the team in March.

Cousins’ extension keeps him tied to the team through the 2023 season and he said on Monday that he’s hopeful about remaining in Minnesota beyond that point. He told reporters that his “mindset” was to figure out a way to remain with the Vikings and that he’d like to retire as a member of the team at some point in the future.


“I think the short answer is I want to be a Minnesota Viking. I wanted to help create some cap space so we could put together the roster that we feel really good about. It’s just trying to always find win-wins. I think it was a way to create a win-win and hopefully that leads to a lot of wins this fall,” Cousins said.

Cousins acknowledged that he has to play well in order for the Vikings to share his desire for a longer relationship and producing those wins this fall would be a good way to set up a long-term future with the NFC North club.

Harrison Smith glad to see Patrick Peterson return to Vikings



Cornerback Patrick Peterson said he had several teams interested in him on the open market, but ultimately he elected to re-sign with the Vikings on a one-year deal.

Longtime Minnesota safety Harrison Smith was glad to see Peterson return.


“He’s a significant presence — not only on the field but just in the building, the meeting rooms,” Smith said in his press conference at the start of Minnesota’s offseason program on Monday. “Kind of being able to be a little bit of a mentor for guys. Like [Chandon Sullivan] was saying, he watched him all the way back from high school.

“I’m older than Pat by like a year, and I feel like I watched him in high school. So, he’s been doing it at a high level for a long time.”

Peterson started 13 games for the Vikings last year, recording 45 total tackles, five passes defensed, and an interception. The fifth overall pick of the 2011 draft, Peterson has 29 career picks and 96 passes defensed in his 11 seasons.

Vikings 2022 NFL draft preview: Where does Minnesota stand at safety?

Don’t let the Minnesota Vikings’ struggles at cornerback distract you from the fact that things are teetering towards disaster at safety as well. Some might even argue the need is more dire at that position than it is at corner.

One thing is certain when breaking this Vikings team down defensively: The secondary is on thin ice, right now.

An injury here or there could mean a cold plunge to the watery depths below. So it’s imperative that first-year general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and his support staff knock it out of the park at the 2022 NFL draft.

Here are where things stand at safety.

A bigger fuss hasn’t been made about the safety position because 33-year-old Harrison Smith is still playing at an elite level.

The longtime Viking earned his sixth Pro Bowl invite last season after posting a career-high 114 tackles, seven pass deflections and one interception. He also tied his career-high of three sacks.

What else can be said at this point? The man still has a feel for consistently being in the right place at the right time.

But things get downright scary further down the depth chart.

The team would love to bump Camryn Bynum as a starter, but there is no certainty the second-year defensive back is ready to make that sort of leap. Josh Metellus and Myles Dorn are being initially viewed as camp bodies or backups hidden behind the emergency glass.

If Bynum doesn’t pan out, or even worse, Smith gets hurt, the Vikings are in big, big trouble.

Who departed this offseason?

Losing Xavier Woods in free agency could sting a bit more than expected, depending on what happens between now and the start of the season.

He was a legitimate ironman for the Vikings in a one-and-done year when he played 100 percent of the snaps. No defensive player in the entire league was on the field more than he was in 2021.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, he was lured away on a three-year deal with the Carolina Panthers. His absence means one of two things: Bynum must step up, or the Vikings need to consider drafting the future at safety.

In a perfect world, business will continue as usual with the Vikings leaning on the elite work of an aging Smith, while plugging Bynum in right next to him.

But the reality is the fact that Smith isn’t getting any younger, and the depth in the backfield is severely lacking. It’s time for the team to start looking towards the future at the position.

Maybe Bynum makes a significant enough second-year leap to be included in that future. It isn’t fair to completely close the door on his ability to contribute to the defense this early, but the Vikings also have to be prepared for the worst case scenario.

There have been plenty of fantasy mock drafts with Kyle Hamilton slipping on the draft board. Even Vikings Wire’s Tyler Forness touched on the topic with a possible trade-up scenario.

If that happens, the Vikings might put their need at cornerback on the backburner to snag a player who could end up being the best overall prospect in the entire draft.

Hamilton has all of the intangibles to be a star at the next level. He’s a safety in a linebacker’s body with the ability to blow up plays as a tackler, along with the footwork and speed to drop back and play in pass coverage as well.

However, it’s more realistic for the Vikings to get their man on day two or three with Hamilton likely going in the top 10.

Just a couple pieces away on defense and I think this team will at least do a flip-flop from last years record. They could be a darkhorse in the NFC if they play it right come draft time.

The Vikings are real close to being playoff contenders in my opinion, but they are still a tad short. Couple spots in the secondary need addressed and the o-line needs depth. A tweak here and there and some good prospects... who knows?

 

Now thats scary the Vikings are in a bad situation cornerback and safety are a must, and a wr would be nice also but you are right about one thing Harrison Smith how long can he play at a elite level?

 

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said that tight end Irv Smith Jr. (knee) is "right on schedule" in his recovery, and the Vikings aren't going to rush him as he returns from his knee injury. The 23-year-old may be held out of workouts this spring as a result after he missed all of last season with a meniscus injury that required surgery. However, Smith is on track to be the team's primary pass-catching tight end in 2022 if he's fully healthy. Tyler Conklin is no longer around, and only Johnny Mundt, Ben Ellefson and Zach Davidson remain in Minnesota's tight end room. In two seasons with the Vikings, Smith has 66 receptions on 90 targets for 676 yards and seven touchdowns, and he could be a great value pick at TE this upcoming season.

This draft for the Vikings is going to be about New Blood draft night will be interesting will any player change teams? Training camp will be very interesting the surprise cuts

 

With the 12th pick do whatever it's to get a stud wr to step in for Thielen I think they can get a decent cb and safety in the later rounds this must be addressed
