There are a lot of contracts that pay a low first year salary after the bonus is payed out.

Actually... an interesting thing happened in 2019 when the Texans won the AFC South. Houston took on a ton of Cleveland's players from 2018. Watson posted a respectable 333 of 495 (67.3%), 3,852 yards, 26 TD (5.3), 12 INT (2.4), 7.8 YPA, and a 98.0 QB rating. His top running back was Carlos Hyde and his back-up was Duke Johnson (both previously with Cleveland). His tight end was Darren Fells (previously with Cleveland). Defensively, Tashaun Gipson, Mike Adams, Barkevious Mingo, and Briean Boddy-Calhoun were in the backfield (again, all previously with Houston).

He also had DeAndre Hopkins, arguably the best WR in football at the time and still a Top 5 talent when healthy and Will Fuller to throw to. Pro Bowl LT Laremy Tunsil was guarding his blindside.

And with several skill positions that were on the Browns from 2018 when Baker went 310 of 486 (63.8%), 3,725 yards, 27 TD (5.6), 14 INT (2.9), 7.7 YPA, and a 93.7 QB rating. I don't feel like we even need to compare Brian "Buttchin" O'Brien and Hue Freakin' Jackson, but happy to hash that out, too, if you want.

    2018 Browns
    QB: Baker Mayfield (R)
RB: Carlos Hyde, Nick Chubb (R)
    WR: Jarvis Landry*
    WR: Antonio Calloway (R)
    WR: Rishard Higgins
    TE: David Njoku, Darren Fells
    LT: Greg Robinson
    LG: Joel Bitonio*
    C: J.C. Tretter
    RG: Kevin Zeitler
    RT: Chris Hubbard

    2019 Texans
    QB: Deshaun Watson*
    RB: Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson
    WR: DeAndre Hopkins*
    WR: Will Fuller
    WR: Kenny Stills
    TE: Jordan Akins
    TE: Darren Fells
    LT: Laremy Tunsil*
    LG: Max Scharping (R)
    C: Nick Martin
    RG: Zach Fulton
    RT: Tytus Howard (R)

    * = Pro Bowl

Sorry... I've yet to see how Watson in the same situation in Cleveland is an upgrade to guys like a healthy Baker or a Kirk Cousins.

If it had a little gray beard it would be exact, but it's a fair profile representation of my dog. lol!

I honestly see the Browns cutting him outright. I don't think many teams would take on a $19 million cap hit for a QB who's currently rehabbing an injury and coming off a career-worst season. Mayfield finished as a bottom 5 QB in pretty much every aspect of the game and has only a year left on the deal. Any team trading for him would also need assurances he signs an extension with them, which leaves the Browns with almost no negotiating leverage.

They probably won't want him signing anywhere with an AFC team but would need to take a Day 3 pick (R4-R7) to accomodate a trade to the NFC.

    Receivers:
2018 DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, Demarvius Thomas, TEs Ryan Griffin, Jordan Thomas
2019 DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, Kenny Stills, TEs Jordan Akins, Darrin Fells
2020 Brandin Cooks, Will Fuller, Randall Cobb, TEs Jordan Akins, Darrin Fells

It looks similar to what we have had the last few years... Now he will have, so far:
2022 Amari Cooper, Donovan Peoples Jones, Anthony Schwartz, TEs David Njoku, Harrison Bryant

I'm not sure he is upgrading his receiving corps.

If you are talking about run support, then yes.

    I disagree.

    a) Teams will look at his healthy tape and disregard his injured tape. Why? Because the WANT to see the potential. They draft, trade and sign on potential every day. His potential film is actually quite good.
    b) I'm sure Berry will be happy to give potential trade partners access to his agent to work out a contract extension if that is what they want to do. This would actually work in the Browns favor, a 4-5 year Baker Mayfield will yield us more return than a 1 year.
    c) That one year isn't a deal breaker. For the team that wants to take the flyer on Mayfield, they would rather throw a 5th-7th rounder at the team, rather than take the chance on the open market that he goes somewhere else.
    d) Reported that Garoppolo is (2) 2nd rounders... Is Baker really THAT much behind his value? So, if he is available for say a 5th rounder, I would believe he has a market. Jimmy is also in the last year of his contract being owed $24.5M for the trading team, compared to Baker's $18.5M.

One other thing about the trade market.. Garoppolo also is rehabbing shoulder surgery.. On his throwing shoulder no less. No one is really even talking about that.

I guess I just don't remember anyone ever referencing the Texans roster as SB caliber, the way they have the Browns last year and this.

IMO this is the most talented team he's been on, and I don't think it's close,.

I get it. Just keep in mind our "SB roster" last season went 8-9. Sounds like you and the F/O are putting about 7-8 of those loses on the QB.

Keep lookin. I'm sure you'll find it after the shock of this deal wears off.

Fair enough. He was mostly terrible last year.

I wonder what Matt Stafford's record vs. playoff teams was as a Lion? This is what happens when there isn't enough talent on the team.... That won't be the case in Cleveland. The Browns are ready to challenge for a title. I know you aren't excited about DW, but he is an improvement to our football team. Cut throat and cold blooded as it was, Andrew Berry did his job. Once we start stacking W's, and we will, things will be much more tolerable.

I think the worst part is that's going to be true for so many people. For me, I don't think it becomes tolerable unless all 26 women are proven to have been lying about it which seems *highly* unlikely.

Assuming the roster is ready, how about this one: is the coach?

Trade market drying up FAST today.
    Matt Ryan to Indy
    Marcus Marietta to ATL
    Jamius Winston re-sign NO

I believe that leaves Carolina and Seattle.. yikes

    I mean... they did (kinda).

    Watson (4 seasons): 67.8%, 14,539 yards, 104 TD (5.9), 36 INT (2.1), 269.2 YPG, 104.5 QB rating
    Cousins (MIN 4 seasons): 68.3%, 16,387 yards, 124 TD (5.8), 36 INT (1.7), 260.1 YPG, 103.5 QB rating

    And most importantly...

    Watson: 29-27
    Cousins: 34-30-1

Okay not the best year to use but still a "little" more competitive? Steelers were really good against playoff teams the year before. Ravens typically are. Probably what I was thinking about.

  20. beachbum M.V.P. Manager Steelers

Usually depends on whether or not the acquiring team and the player on the last year of their deal can agree to an extension pre-trade. Helps make the trade price more comfortable. But why would Baker do that? I wouldn't if I were him unless it's a shit ton of guaranteed money and I don't think that's very likely

I could see the compensation being as low as a 6th at this point without some agreement in place between Mayfield and his new team.
