Cowboys’ Micah Parsons named 2021 Butkus Award winner

The accolades for Dallas Cowboys rookie linebacker Micah Parsons have been plentiful. He was selected to the Pro Bowl, named a First-Team All-Pro, the Defensive Rookie of the Month on two occasions, the NFC Defensive Player of the Year by the NFL’s 101 awards, and the Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America.

That’s more than an entire career for most players, but Parsons continues to rack up honors. He was recently named the 2021 Butkus award winner given to the league’s top linebacker.

The Butkus award was instituted in 1985 by the Downtown Athletic of Orlando in honor of Hall of Famer Dick Butkus who played nine seasons for the Chicago Bears (1965-1973) and is annually given to the top linebacker on the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. Parsons joins past winners such as former Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware (2008, 2011), Von Miller (2012), Khalil Mack (2016, 2018), T.J. Watt (2020), and Luke Kuechly who holds the record with three selections (2014, 2015, 2017).

Parsons was given this prestigious honor due to a spectacular rookie campaign in which tallied 84 tackles (20 tackles for loss), 13 sacks, 30 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles, and three passes defended.

This won’t be the last award he takes home though as next week he is expected to be named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year and could win the Defensive Player of Year award as well.

If Parsons wins DPOY it’s the biggest crock of shit ever. Watt should have won the Butkus award too. WTF is wrong with the morons that vote for these awards.

  3. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Who could POSSIBLY beat him out for DPOY?? Is ANYONE even close to him?

You do realize this is a hack article and not a tally of voting, right? It’s going to be unanimous when the actual vote comes out.

Micah Parsons wins NFL’s fastest man race, but admits Tyreek Hill is faster

The NFL’s fastest man race at the Pro Bowls skills competition on Thursday had an unlikely winner: Micah Parsons, the Cowboys’ 245-pound rookie linebacker. But Parsons admitted afterward that he’s not really the fastest man in the NFL.

Instead, Parsons said the real fastest man is Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who finished behind Parsons in the event along with Browns running back Nick Chubb and Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs. Parsons noted that Hill wasn’t giving it his all in the race and is still healing up from Sunday’s AFC Championship Game.

“I know he isn’t coming out here and playing his best. He just played a couple days ago. He’s the fastest man in the league. I’m just happy to be somewhere in the middle. I do want a Madden 95 speed, though,” Parsons said.

The NFL has introduced the Pro Bowl skills competition in an attempt to replicate the same success the NBA gets from its dunk contest and baseball gets from Home Run Derby. So far, it hasn’t generated much attention, but a fastest man competition could potentially generate real interest from fans — if the fastest players in the league really took it seriously. Parsons took it seriously, but Hill didn’t.

Not sure who the author is but Watt won the PFWA DPOY award, not Parsons.

Im confused... the article by 'Cowboyswire' claims he won the Butkus award, not the DPOY. Says he could win the DROY... and that he is expected to win DPOY... but we know he didnt.

Cardinals RB James Conner 'would love' to return to Arizona as free agency nears

James Conner is set to hit free agency after a monster season, generating 752 yards and 15 rushing TDs on 202 carries in his first year in Arizona.

A Pro Bowler, Conner proved he can be a destructive runner and a difference-maker near the goal line, and improved as a pass-catcher (37 receptions on 39 targets for 375 yards and three TDs).

After struggling through injury near the end of his run in Pittsburgh, Conner signed a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the Cardinals.

The 26-year-old told Dani Sureck of the team's official website that he'd love to return to Arizona this offseason.

"With the opportunity they gave me and the relationships I've built (in Arizona), I would love to continue out there," he said. "But I'm a free agent, so I'm excited to see what's next. I'm a man of faith, so I know it will all work out for me."

Conner enters the offseason as one of the top running backs heading toward free agency. While teams don't throw money at running backs, he could have a solid market after his outstanding 2021 season.

A return to Arizona makes sense if sides can work out an arrangement, particularly with fellow running back Chase Edmonds also slated to be a free agent.

Outside of DeAndre Hopkins, nearly all of Arizona's top weapons are set to be free agents. Joining Conner and Edmonds, Christian Kirk, A.J. Green, Zach Ertz and Maxx Williams are all slated to hit the open market. Those six free agents accounted for 65 percent of the Cardinals' rushing yards and 71 percent of their passing yards in 2021.

Pressed against the salary cap, it will be an interesting offseason of difficult choices in Arizona, starting with whether the Cardinals can retain Conner.

In the first paragraph..."and the Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America."

The last 12 words are false. Watt won the DPOY by the Pro Football Writers of America.

And to be fair the author probably should mention that the 101 awards chose Parsons as the NFC Defensive Player of the Year. But maybe I'm being picky.

Change “player” to “rookie” and the other 11 words are true…author may have been (understandably) confused by the PFWA giving out three ROY awards

  12. beachbum M.V.P. Manager Steelers

No he listed rookie of the year separately (in the same sentence). Am I the only one able to read today? You guys checking out early on Friday? :SEP:

Okay I actually get what you're saying now. The PFWA awards a Defensive Rookie, Offensive Rookie and then a Rookie of the Year (which will always be one of the other winners, right?). Weird.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: LB Micah Parsons, Dallas Cowboys
OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: WR Ja’Marr Chase, Cincinnati Bengals
DEFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: LB Micah Parsons, Dallas Cowboys

Presumably, unless a long snapper is better than any of the offensive or defensive rookies some year, I guess.

no, but I suppose it is POSSIBLE a kicker could. Especially in a lackluster draft class.

NFL announces retirement of eight officials, each with 20 or more years of experience

Many of the NFL’s most experienced officials will not return for the 2022 season.

The league has announced that eight league officials, all of whom have been working for at least 20 years, are retiring.

The best-known is referee Tony Corrente, whose retirement was reported last month. Corrente worked a total of 27 years, and he was the referee for Super Bowl XLI.

The other retiring officials are down judge Ed Camp, field judge Scott Edwards, field judge/side judge Greg Gautreaux, side judge Joe Larrew, replay official Johnny McGrath, line judge Mark Steinkerchner and field judge Steve Zimmer.

NFL officiating has been widely criticized this season, particularly the inconsistent enforcement of the taunting rule, which included a call Corrente made against Cassius Marsh of the Bears in a Monday Night Football game against the Steelers.

Losing many of the league’s most experienced officials could be an opportunity for the league to improve officiating — if there are enough good college officials in the pipeline ready to move up to the NFL. Which is a big “if.”

Does that mean that the officiating will be worse next season with all the rookie officials out there?
