What I mean is that the short contract would seem to indicate the Browns either aren't convinced Robinson is worthy of a long term deal (yet), or they have a philosophy of linemen being less critical to success, than skill players.

Or they may simply believe their linemen for the most part aren't elite, and can be replaced without much drop off, thus will continue to tinker.

Personally I would love to see Robinson become the guy, and anchor that spot for years, and it could be argued, he himself is betting on that.

You can when his dead money # is only 500K.

500k is a lot of money when it's yours being pissed away. These owners are businessman first, they aren't going to take that lying down which is why you just don't see that type of thing very often. The chances of them eating that money so they can pay Trent Williams 11M is slim to none.

If something were to happen and they could upgrade...the cap savings is 6.5 million.

So really they would pay Williams 4.5 million more than they were already gonna pay.

On a team that I think still has a crap ton of cap room.

Who said anything about cutting Robinson if they pick up Williams? After all, according to you, we 're just buying success anyway.

So you're going to pay Robinson 7M to be your swing tackle?

Why not? It's only Haslam's money and as long as we're taking shortcuts . . . Do it big !!!

Beach, you are talking about the owner that traded for a QB that was owed $17M in dead money, knowing they were going to cut him before he ever played a down, just to pick up a second round draft pick...are you seriously arguing they are fretting over $500k for a guy they feel could play at either bookend, if a better LT is found?

Now, all that said, I agree with @kenibals that Dorsey is a firm believer in replacing linemen across the board with draft picks. Robinson is actually a cheap alternative and I don't believe they will be in the market for Williams with his price tag. I DO believe LT will be high on his list for the 2020 draft ..but... It will be difficult to find a starting LT in the draft when we are picking at #32.

I have a quarrel with your use of the word "played", sir.

I mean... it didn't start off this way. 2019 was a dumpster fire for a whole different reason (Kitchens) and Odell had a very solid season.

2020 went very well for the Browns and probably should have started to raise a few alarms. Browns go 11-5 and not only make it to a playoff game (ending a 17 year drought), they win one (ending a 26 year dought). They did that mostly without Odell.

We're finding out today that he was asking out of town before the season even started which should have been a huge red flag to the organization. Trying to get off a 12-6 playoff roster with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations doesn't exactly scream "here for the team". Instead of being vocal about it at the time, he sabotaged several games (the multitude of drops, and especially those fourth-down drops, are less of a mystery to me now), and then raised all hell by proxy the day before the deadline.

As easy as it is - or would be - to hate Odell, the blame rests solely with the front office of this team. Andrew Berry has done a phenomenal job, but he screwed this one up pretty significantly.

I would say calling OBJ selfish was pretty spot on. Definitely not a team guy at any point in his career.

Honestly, that's only half-fair. He's an interesting case. Everyone, to a man, says nothing but positive things about him. As a person, he seems to genuinely be a good person. As a professional, well... while he handles himself well in some aspects he's now left two organizations in beleaguered spots. There's no doubt a selfishness to his professional side which isn't (or doesn't seem to be) fueled by the teams' goals. It's fueled by his ability to generate press, help his own numbers, and ultimately, earn him more money.

Do I think he screwed the Browns over? Big-time. Is he the only one to blame? Of course not. Do I harbor resentment? Nah... just wish it could have worked out here.
