Titans star running back Derrick Henry will undergo surgery to repair his injured foot on Tuesday morning, head coach Mike Vrabel said in his Monday press conference.

Henry suffered the injury in Sunday’s victory over the Colts, but he still played through the end of the game, taking 74 percent of Tennessee’s offensive snaps.


“We’re not going to put a timeline on when he may return,” Vrabel said, via Ben Arthur of the Tennessean. “I know that he’ll do everything that he can to work himself back to be able to help this football team. And whenever that is, that’s when it’ll be. I know that he’ll be around our team as soon as he can. I know that’s important to him and I know that’ll be important to our team.

“We’ll have to move on, unfortunately, without him in the short term and not look back.”

Vrabel said the team found out after the game that Henry’s foot was going to be a significant issue. The head coach also noted that there’s a chance Henry returns this season. But, according to multiple reports, the bone broken in Henry’s foot carries a roughly eight-week recovery timetable.

Vrabel noted that Henry is disappointed, but will work to get back as quickly as possible.

“He feels bad,” Vrabel said, via Jim Wyatt of the team’s website. “We spent a lot of time together with the coaching staff and with the players, so you never want to see any of them injured in any capacity. So I know that Derrick is going to work extremely hard to get back to do everything he can to help this football team.”

Henry led the league in rushing in each of the past two seasons, reaching 2,027 yards with 17 touchdowns last year. He currently leads the league with 219 carries, 937 yards rushing, and 10 rushing touchdowns.

Indianapolis’ Jonathan Taylor is second with 649 rushing yards.

Titans signing Adrian Peterson to their practice squad

Adrian Peterson is going to be in the mix for backfield work in Tennessee while Derrick Henry is out of the lineup with a foot injury.

According to multiple reports, the Titans are signing Peterson to their practice squad. There was word on Monday morning that Peterson would be working out for the team.


Henry is having foot surgery on Tuesday and could miss the remainder of the season.

Peterson can be called up to the active roster and revert to the practice squad twice before the Titans would have to make him a permanent part of the active roster or release him. If he looks good enough in practice for him to get a spot on the gameday roster, it seems like a good bet that he will wind up on the roster for the long term.

Peterson has not been with a team since closing out the 2020 season with the Lions. He had 156 carries for 604 yards and seven touchdowns with Detroit last year.

Vikings fear Danielle Hunter suffered torn pec, could miss rest of season

Danielle Hunter's first season back from injury appears to have met a premature conclusion.

The Vikings edge rusher is feared to have suffered a torn pectoral muscle, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported. Hunter is undergoing an MRI exam Monday morning to confirm the diagnosis, which would sideline him for the rest of the season.

Hunter suffered the pectoral injury in Minnesota's Sunday night loss to Dallas. He played fewer than 40 percent of the total defensive snaps, exiting midway through the second quarter.

Hunter's injury would be the second to rob him of significant playing time in as many seasons. A neck ailment kept him from participating in the 2020 season at all following two straight Pro Bowl seasons.

When healthy, Hunter is a menace and unquestionably Minnesota's best rusher, if not the Vikings' best defender overall. Hunter has racked up 60.5 sacks in roughly five and a half seasons and had six sacks in seven games before suffering the pectoral injury. He earned a five-year, $72 million extension in 2018 and will have two seasons left on it if his 2021 campaign is finished.

Minnesota, meanwhile, will have to turn elsewhere to attempt to replace him for a second straight campaign.

Monday Night Football: Chiefs survive with 20-17 victory over Giants



The Kansas City Chiefs still don’t look anything near the juggernaut they’ve been in recent seasons, but they did just enough to escape with a win over the New York Giants on Monday night.

A 34-yard field goal by Harrison Butker with 1:07 remaining lifted the Chiefs to a crucial 20-17 victory over the Giants.


With the game tied at 17-17 with 4:41 left to play, Patrick Mahomes began a drive for the go-ahead score for the Chiefs. After a mostly quiet night otherwise, Travis Kelce caught a 14-yard pass from Mahomes that moved the Chiefs across midfield when Tae Crowder was called for a phantom facemask penalty. A 24-yard tap pass from Mahomes to Mecole Hardman took the Chiefs down to the Giants 9-yard line with just over three minutes remaining.

Keion Crossen sacked Mahomes to force a field goal try and Butker’s field goal gave the Chiefs the lead.

The Giants last chance was convincingly thwarted by the Chiefs with Chris Jones and Frank Clark each notching sacks of Daniel Jones to seal away the victory.

Mahomes wasn’t brilliant against the Giants but managed to do enough to get the job done. He completed 29 of 48 passes for 275 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

A 6-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Tyreek Hill gave Kansas City the early 7-0 lead. Hill was the only player to have a big night offensively for Kansas City, catching 12 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Kyle Rudolph‘s 1-yard touchdown from Jones got the Giants on the board in the second quarter and evened the game at 7-7.

Derrick Gore scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to put Kansas City back in front with 6:37 left in the half. The advantage would remain in the Chiefs’ favor into the break as Graham Gano‘s 23-yard field goal for New York could only cut the deficit to 14-10 at the half.

A 5-yard touchdown pass form Jones to Evan Engram gave the Giants their first and only lead of the night at 17-14 seven seconds into the fourth quarter. However, the Chiefs would put together consecutive scoring drives as Butker delivered field goals of 36 and 34 yards to put the Chiefs back out in front for good.

Jones completed 22 of 32 passes for 222 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Giants. Jones had to deal with a depleted receiving corps as Sterling Shepard and Dante Pettis both were knocked from the game with injuries. Kadarius Toney also was sidelined due to a thumb injury before returning to the contest in the fourth quarter.

Melvin Ingram is on the move.

Ingram, the veteran linebacker who saw his playing time dramatically reduced in Pittsburgh, is being traded to Kansas City.


Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the Chiefs are giving up a sixth-round pick for Ingram.

The Steelers had previously turned down an offer from the Chiefs for Ingram, thinking they’d rather not trade him to a team that they could be in competition with for an AFC wild card berth. But they’ve apparently decided that getting something for Ingram is better than getting nothing for him.

Ingram’s playing time has steadily declined this season, and he hasn’t worked out the way the Steelers thought he would when he signed a one-year, $4 million contract. The Chiefs are desperate to improve their defense, and he may be able to contribute more in Kansas City than he did in Pittsburgh.

The Chiefs look desperate on offense too. I don’t know why? They still have their skill players, so why is the offense struggling so much?

 

I hate to accuse the chosen one, but after his quick first reads, something is wrong with Mahomes. He is making a lot of bad decisions. Frankly, if he had thrown better throws to his receives, he would have more than 10 picks through 8 games. Not sure what s going on there, but he is struggling big. Maybe undisclosed injury of some sort?

I don’t know why people can’t put the keys down and stop the drunk driving. It’s like when you are drunk you just don’t believe you’re drunk. I’ve driven way too many times after drinking, and when you hear stuff like this it just makes me so sorry I ever have done it myself. It’s time we made vehicles that won’t work when the driver is drunk or only drive on auto pilot. You would think people with lots of money would invest in cars that can drive for you. I’m seriously considering getting a Tesla for moments like that when I have had too much and I’m too stupid to not drive.

 

Mahomes is def not playing well, but its not just him its lots of them. There is a distinct lack of self confidence permeating that whole team. Travis Kelce just played the worst game ive ever seem from him, by far! I actually thought he should be benched. Andy Reid made some very questionable play calls and his clock/situation management at the end of the 1st half was just amatuer hour. A good offense would've scored a TD and the Chiefs would've gone in behind. You've got Frank Clark making bonehead penalties then with the ball being snapped at the 5 he's turning around to talk to his LB. If he'd been awake his pass rush would've taken him right into the throwing lane of that TD.

Pretty crazy to see the catalogue of mistakes they're making. Its all mental. Usually id just say they'll get their swag back and be fine, but their schedule the rest of the way is pretty brutal.

 

Yep career over. And pretty substantial jail time too i'd imagine.

Like all QBs not all 10 of his interceptions are on him. Chiefs coaching staff has seemingly not made adjustment to the way defenses are now playing them. Mahomes is the least blitzed qb in the league this year.

 

I get that... what I am saying is I have seen a lot more throws that should have been intercepted... He really should have more than 10 right now.. I'm not debating the 10 that he already has.

 

Rams release DeSean Jackson



After they were unable to find a trade partner, the Rams have released DeSean Jackson.

The Rams announced the move on Tuesday afternoon.


General Manager Les Snead told reporters that Los Angeles did not do so before 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. That means Jackson will be subject to waivers because he’ll be cut after the trade deadline.

Jackson posted a goodbye message to the Rams on his Instagram.

“I am very grateful for the time that I spent playing for the LA Rams,” Jackson said. ‘Although this isn’t the outcome that we wanted, I am extremely appreciative for the opportunity & support given to me by the Rams Coaches & all of the Fans. I understand that everything happens for a reason & I look forward to beginning the next chapter of my NFL career. Thank you.”

Jackson caught eight passes for 221 yards with a touchdown for the Rams in seven games. But he never played more than 22 offensive snaps in a game, with some matchups playing just three or four.

“It was an experiment that we attempted. Didn’t work out as well as we wanted it to, as well as DeSean wanted it to, as well as Sean [McVay] wanted it to,” Snead said, via Greg Beacham of the Associated Press. “That is why we wanted to move in this direction, come up with a win-win.”

Though Jackson is 34, he’s still displayed an ability to make plays.

If a team claims Jackson off waivers, they’ll be on the hook for the rest of his 2021 salary.

But in with Jackson’s release, the Rams’ receiving corps is particularly thin. The club also placed rookie Tutu Atwell on injured reserve on Tuesday with a season-ending shoulder injury. That leaves Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, Van Jefferson, and Ben Skowronek as receivers on the 53-man roster. Landen Akers and J.J. Koski are receivers on the practice squad.

Los Angeles also announced that the team has waived defensive end Jonah Williams and placed linebacker Travin Howard on injured reserve.
