Matt Nagy says if Dalton is healthy he plays Sunday. If you needed another reason to hate Matt Nagy….you’re welcome.
Mostly agree with BWW. The bears weren't awful/comically bad yesterday and we can't confuse how Detroit being the worse team on the field doesn't mean the bears were good. We've seen this trend too much with Nagy over the past few years, where they look comically bad and the result is utter embarrassment where everybody sees the problem except the guy wearing the visor behind playsheet followed by a semi-competent effort. Matt Nagy in his presser was a sour little bitch. The press wasn't kind to him and they had to drag out of him that Lazor called plays, but in being a stupidly egotistical prick Nagy had to emphasize that "it all runs through me, we put it together during the week and we collaborate and I oversee it" before saying he won't keep talking about it. No, fuckface--you can see what's happening in the game when you're not oggleing your playsheet for the next play that most teams know is coming and it doesn't work. The bears are hush-hushed about internal things--but I can't believe I have to say I'd be relieved to know Pace/Sweaty Teddy intervened and took it away from him. Its one game, and the Lions no less--we'll just have to wait and see if the ego-driven moron takes back playcalling. Which brings us to Andy Dalton. Nagy just said he's the starter when he's healthy. He really wants to go down swinging his way instead of doing what's best for the team, which is understandable given the pressure on any head coach to be successful but what is Justin Fields going to learn going back to the bench, because he put 24 points on the board--more than you could put up with Dalton in 1.5 weeks. What is there to be gained? I don't get it, you're the head coach, you still get the fucking credit when you win and Fields looks good, your job is safe. Why the fuck is this so hard? It's what's best for the team. Anthony Lynn did this shit a year ago in San Diego benching Justin Herbert for Tyrod Taylor. He's now the offensive coordinator for the Lions calling plays against you yesterday. Fire this fucking clown. Into the sun. He's getting and has gotten dragged locally/nationally for a reason. Negative out of the way, let's get to the good parts. I like the amount of time Robert Quinn is spending in opposing teams' backfields. He has elite bend right now. Desai called a mostly solid game and the defense was stiff when it needed to be. I really hope Hicks comes back next week. Jon Gruden may be a complete meathead, but he's smart enough to see how the Lions and Browns gashed them--and their offense is predicated on Carr play actioning and drawing in ILBs of opposing defenses to get the cushion in front of the safeties. I like Trevis Gipson showing skill. "Bill Lazor is calm when he's talking to me in the booth and I respond well with that, its hard for coach (Nagy) to call plays and worry about special teams." Justin Fields comment in postgame presser. That's what the offensive coordinator is supposed to be. Liked a lot of Fields, but he wont fix being as raw as he is (slow wind up mainly) sitting on the bench. He'll have to adjust this year and you don't do that running scout team in practices. Monty apparently avoided something major. Damien Williams has an injury apparently. Herbert in the few snaps he had looked slow hitting the hole. Going to have to fix that, just please don't let Ryan Nall be a likely active RB2/ST guy. Mooney and Robinson looked swell. I'd like to see Cole Kmet involved more and #84 maybe a little less. Justin missed him wide open with 10 yards in between the safety and him before forcing 8 yards. I've been critical of Ogletree. He had a dumb 1st quarter. He then prowled sideline to sideline with Roquan for the last 3. OLine was mostly acceptable. Everybody had a bad/dumb play or two but also several solid ones.
- The Lions are always bad and thats great. But what makes then truly entertaining and funny is when they combine bad with dumb. And boy were they dumb yesterday. Lets direct snap it to the D-Lineman inside the 10! Down 2 scores late in the game and in FG range on 4th down? Lets go for it! Derp derp derp. With their meatball approach behind their meatball HC this could be one of the funniest seasons we've seen from the Detroit Derps in years. - Fields looked good. Yes there are flaws and things to work on, which we are able to be honest about rather than pretending something else like some kind of Browns fan *cough*bitchdawg*cough*. But Fields dropped so many dimes yesterday i expected to see people sat on the field with open guitar cases. Love those facts/tweets you guys have been throwing out. Another thing i love is how little Fields ran yesterday. I think he had one good run for a FD but that was about it. They called a couple of read options where Fields handed off before faking to run left or right. Both times it was wide open for big gains if he'd kept it but no problemo, save that good stuff for when you really need it. No need to waste putting it on film against these buffoons. - Whisper it, but word is Monty hasn't done his ACL and its a hyper-extension. Some extension! Make that kind of extension to your mortgage payments and they send big bastards in cheap suits round to your house! Really hope Monty isn't out long, he's basically my fav player at this point. Tell you what there's 5 other guys who are hoping it isnt long either. You wanna see what that OLs really made of? Take away Monty! Those 5 bums are squeaking in such harmony right now they could be confused for the woodwind section of the London Symphony Orchestra! - ARob has looked pretty unmotivated to the start the season(hard to blame him), but after catching that freakin laser from Fields on the PA lets hope its the start of some chemistry. Chemistry that of course they're having to develop on the field cos a certain numbnuts gave all the time with the #1s in TC to Dalton. - Bill Lazor, standing applause. I know i know, that kind of competency is what we should be entitled to expect, but such has been our lot as Bears fans. - Ogletree had a very rough start, first looking like Bambi on ice then missing a tackle. But after a pep talk from Pat and I he had a game. Led the team in tackles, had a TFL, and also a crucial pass breakup in the endzone that would surely have been a TD. I was almost pining for Danny T early on, but if Ogletree can keep that level of play up then he should keep his job. - Speaking of Patg, i was a little disappointed not to get one of his patented "your table is ready"s for Quinn in his post. Certainly deserved it. Great to see a guy perform at such a high level into their 60s. - Up until now Trevis Gipson has been all hype during the week and no highlights on sundays. Well holy crap did that change! Gipson went off, with 1 sack, 1 QB hit, 2 TFLs and a PD. AND he had another strip sack on the play Goff's powerball numbers came up and the ball miraculously bounced straightt back into his arms. Totally bullshit btw that Gipson didn't pick up any kind of stat on a great play like that, not even a sack! Should've been credited with 2. - Cole Kmet had a friggin horrible game. 1 catch for 6 yards on 3 targets. On the deep pass from Fields after escaping pressure Kmet showed all the body control of me after that 10th pint. Losing himself and making a lame jump/fall and not getting very close to what was a very catchable ball. And the blocking may have been worse! Multiple blocking Ls, including the one that resulted in the sack/fumble/3rd & 30forever. Kmet barely laid a hand on the blitzing Derps LB, making the dude look like Derrick Thomas in the process. We were all very patient with Kmet his rookie year. We know TEs take some time. But tbh im almost at opinion formation here. He isnt the useless sack of shit that Sheheen was, but there's just nothing that Kmet does well. He isn't a dynamic athlete at all and he isnt an effective blocker. Said the day Pace drafted him he didn't look like a 2nd rounder to me. He doesnt look like a 3rd rounder right now. - Every week there's someone in that secondary who looks like an arena league bum and this week it was Bush. Safety is a need this offseason and a pretty big one. Oh and i like how they're all copying JJ's sheath-your-sword move now after a pass breakup. Yeah the difference is he's earned it fellas.
Gotta confess there is a part of me that would like to see this happen. If Dalton plays meh and they lose then Nagy has basically just signed his own death warrant.
So Matt Nagy gave up play calling, or had it taken away from him. Which going by the presser after the game sounds more likely. All he talked about was how despite not calling the plays everything goes threw him. Sounds like someone trying to convince others he is still an important part of the process. Important enough to not be fired for the first time in team history during a season. Now he reiterates that when Dalton is healthy he is the starter. Coming of that game where your prized rookie QB looked like he just might be the real deal you make that announcement. This man is a fucking moron. Or he has a lot of money riding on Andy Daltons over under on games played. Nagy, the man who he says everything goes through, has made the statement that when he is healthy Dalton will start. Dalton will indeed be healthy for this coming game or by the latest the following week. So something is going to have to give. Could you even imagine if Dalton winds up starting next week? Maybe Nagy is actually trying to get fired.
They're saying Monty will be out 3-5weeks. That does suck, but i put the news in the victory thread because to me this is a big win overall. I really thought he was done for the season, which would'nt just write off this year, it would've meant rehab, and as we're now seeing with Cohen, you never know how that will go. So im really pleased its just a major knee sprain and not something more serious.
I didn't get a chance to watch this game Sunday, so ended up on the Game Pass "condensed" game yesterday night, which was just pleasant to watch because I can't imagine how you guys tolerated those announcers. Holy shit, the worst announcing crew in football from the snippets I heard - made me pine for Collinsworth's Rodgers cock gobbling. Going to repeat what a lot of you guys have already said. * Quinn - I apologize. Maybe if I call out other underperformers they will light on fire? I didn't know about an injury last year, but now that seems to have been the case? He's really turned things around. * Desai - he's calling some good games, and knows the strength of this team is on the front 7. * I get the distinct feeling Nagy is terrible at his job. I don't think it was his call for Lazor to call plays. That challenge of the obvious dropped int. The "smoke and mirrors" on who's starting only to confirm it anyway. "It's a game day decision" - Friday: "It's Fields". Stick to something man. * Lazor is not the second coming offensive guru, but it was refreshing to watch this team play to its strengths. Run game, and give the rook some time, set him up for better success. I think it was early 3rd Q, where I swear I saw the I formation, and if you didn't know Nagy wasn't calling plays by that point, that cinched it because he wasn't brought here to run the I formation. And he ran the I, ran the I, then boom, I but what's this, play action, hitting a big deep play? You can do that? I thought we just throw our rookie back in 5-7 step drops and hope the line holds. It's almost like there was a game plan, and a rhythm. So weird. Competence is a pretty low bar to clear, yet here we are. * The Lions are the Lions, so take nothing from this game. I mean, I had tears in my eyes from laughing after the "snap, off Goff's gut, to the DL". And then they get the flag too, which rather than a false start is illegal motion, the live ball penalty. Only the Lions. Nice to see them panicking and going for it on 4th down (which, had they taken the FG both times, it's a 4 point game and maybe changes the plans, etc). * Lazor also converted a 4th down, can you believe that? * Monty out for weeks is bad news. We just discovered he can be used as an offensive weapon. Cohen is still injured from last year. * The upcoming schedule is absolutely brutal. Buckle up. Can't we just play the Lions every week? That was enjoyable.
Watched the game again and outside of the Rams game week 1....Sean Desai has been scheming really well. He's throwing out different looks week to week. Saw a play where he used DHC to basically pick a DE that allowed Mack to rush inside and get a 1 on 1 on a RB. That's great stuff. That's your job as a coordinator...to get favorable matchups for your guys. He's gotta find more snaps for Trevis Gipson. Kid hasn't been on the field much but he's making a difference when he is. He seems to understand his players strength and weaknesses. And he isn't just running out the same gameplan every week. He's making in game and week to week adjustments. Really happy with this pick as DC so far.
Y'all are saying the same things I'd be saying, so not much to add. I will say, it is awfully nice to play the Lions twice a year. I make sure to savor those games when we get them. Let's enjoy this one while we can...
Great weekend of football. Both Saturday and Sunday. But as the case every season our opponent next Sunday will be the measuring stick. Don't get your hopes up.
Bama losing is great. Notre Dame winning not so much, but Cincinnati reminding us all they're still frauds week or two ago was glorious. Yeah...the Packers game isn't looking very good. Erin and Adams aren't gonna be out of sync or dropping wide open, busted coverage, sure-fire TDs.
So... That was a win that actually felt good. Haven't had one of those in a while. Even if it was the usual recipe....(Defense+ST) - Offense = Win. As I said in the game thread I get going slow with Fields and not asking him to do too much but there were passing downs in the 2nd half where they opted to run very obvious runs from very obvious formations and the Raiders were very obviously lined up to the stop the run and the obvious outcome was no gain. Fields basically won the game with his last completion....he can be trusted with the football. This kid will throw some picks in his career but he's not a Cutler. He's not a Winston. His accuracy and ball placement is really good. Let him throw. There's really no reason Khalil Herbert shouldn't be #1 in the RB rotation next week. If Allen Robinson wants to stop getting mugged by CBs...he should consider getting some separation on his routes. James Daniels is a head scratcher. Has a great play....has a poor one. Over and over. I wonder if helping Mustipher so much has effected his own game. Cole Kmet is simply not a downfield pass catcher. Not yet anyway. He played a ball poorly last week. Early in the game yesterday he slowed down on a ball in the air like he was close to catching it and it sailed 8 yards over his head. Then he spun his body oddly on a sideline ball later. He doesn't know how to play a ball in the air. Jimmy Graham blocked someone. Yay. Did you have Jesper Horsted in the first TE to catch a touchdown pass pool? Might be Lazor calling plays but Nagy just handed him his Mama Wong's House of Dim Sum menu and said these are the only plays you can call. Why the designed runs with Fields if you're worried about him getting hit? Why? Sean Desai has been pretty damn impressive. This isn't the best front 7 the Chicago Bears have ever had. But it might be the deepest. There are role players making big plays every week. I can't get enough of Trevis Gipson. I honestly want to see some packages where Mack moves inside and Gipson and Quinn are on the edges. Robert Quinn...you sexy motherfucker you. Getting run stops...chasing down runners from behind. Collapsing the pocket....helping out your teammates. Keep it up. Coverage has been much better. They have some legit tests upcoming though. The first Mario Edwards penalty didn't bother me. The second one was a criminal offense. Don't do that to your team. I am happy to see this team be more physical. Last time they played the Raiders they got punked. This time they came to play and were just as aggressive. I love it. Good feelings likely won't last more than a few days....brutal schedule upcoming.
If you go back and look at these 4 throws....all are catchable. The 2nd one to Kmet was the worst of the 4.
I thought he had a pretty good game yesterday. At least in run blocking. I saw him mauling guys downfield several times. Is he the best TE we have? I think so. You've already pointed out what Kmet does poorly. None of the other TEs stand out and Graham is finished. Is the scheme different? Or does it help that Mack, Quinn are actually earning their paychecks this year? Seems like I saw a few stunts yesterday, which we didn't see a lot of last year but otherwise I'm not savvy enough to see what he does differently than Pagano.
Because A-Rob gets no separation it means every pass is going to be contested. A-Rob will win a lot of those battles but also lose a lot, even to crappy DBs. This is where a reliable TE could really come in handy for a rookie QB. Kmet is not it. Can Horsted get open regularly? Give him a chance.
Quinn coming back to form has been a huge boost. And I think it's a huge part of the reason why Mack looks better. Desai is mixing things up. He's giving the defense a lot of different looks. Pagano was very vanilla. He's wheeling his coverages a lot. He's using a lot of different packages to make sure the jersey numbers are moving and the QB has to think.
After what he showed in preseason....there's no reason not to give him a chance. What do you lose? Kmet is not the guy.
Didn't realize until today that Mack doesn't get credit for a sack on the sack he had on the 2 point conversion attempt. That's dumb.
