Andy Dalton questionable for Sunday, Bears to decide on starting QB Sunday The Bears will be taking their decision about who to start at quarterback into the weekend. Andy Dalton has been listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Lions due to the knee injury that sidelined him for Week Three’s loss to the Browns. Dalton was a limited participant in practice all week. Justin Fields was a full participant in practice all week after dinging his thumb during the Cleveland game. He does not have an injury designation for Sunday. Bears head coach Matt Nagy said earlier this week that Dalton remains the team’s No. 1 quarterback when healthy and said on Friday that it will be a game-time decision about whether he’s healthy enough to fill that role this weekend. Linebacker Khalil Mack (foot) is also listed as questionable after a limited practice Friday. He didn’t work on Wednesday or Thursday. Safety Tashaun Gipson (hamstring) didn’t practice all week and is listed as doubtful. PFT
Rodgers, Roethlisberger both may surpass Dan Marino Sunday on NFL career passing lists When Dan Marino retired from the Dolphins, he owned the NFL career records for passing yards and passing touchdowns. As NFL rules and strategies have caused passing numbers to dwarf those of the past, and Marino is no longer a record holder. And on Sunday, two different quarterbacks may pass Marino in the same game. With the Packers playing the Steelers on Sunday, Aaron is likely to surpass Marino for passing touchdowns, while Roethlisberger is likely to surpass Marino for passing yards. Marino is currently sixth all time in both passing yards, with 61,361, and passing touchdowns, with 420. Roethlisberger has 61,149 career passing yards, so if he throws for 213 yards on Sunday, he’ll move ahead of Marino and into sixth place all time for yards. Rodgers has 418 career passing touchdowns, so if he throws three touchdown passes on Sunday, he’ll move ahead of Marino and into sixth place all time for touchdowns. Rodgers is No. 10 on the career yardage list, while Roethlisberger is No. 8 on the career touchdowns list. PFT
Bears announce Justin Fields will start vs. Lions Justin Fields will start his second game in a row for the Bears on Sunday. The Bears announced on Saturday afternoon that Fields has been declared the starter. Bears head coach Matt Nagy previously indicated that he wouldn’t decide on his starter until game time, but now the Bears are calling Fields the starter and saying Andy Dalton is doubtful with a knee injury. Nick Foles will likely be the backup to Fields and Dalton will likely be inactive. Fields struggled mightily in his first start last week, and the Bears’ offense managed just 47 yards in a loss to the Browns. Now the Bears will hope that Fields and the offense can put forth a better effort in a home game against the winless Lions. PFT
Mike Tomlin: Ben Roethlisberger has “hip issues” Tom Brady‘s stunning longevity has caused many to forget that 39-year-old quarterbacks experience 39-year-old things. That’s precisely what’s happening to Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Via Ed Bouchette of TheAthletic.com, coach Mike Tomlin told reporters on Tuesday that Roethlisberger is “has some hip issues.” It’s unclear whether this means issues with each hip, or multiple issues with one hip. Regardless, when considering his age, the wear and tear he’s suffered in the past, and the pounding he’s taking now, it’s a problem. And it likely won’t get any better. Roethlisberger suffered a left pectoral injury in a Week Two loss to the Raiders. The Steelers have now lost three games in a row after starting 1-0. They host the Broncos on Sunday in what seems to be as close to a must-win game that there ever can be in October. PFT
Bears name Justin Fields as starter in Week Five and beyond When Bears head coach Matt Nagy was asked about quarterback Andy Dalton on Monday, he said that the veteran remained the No. 1 quarterback as long as he is healthy enough to play. Dalton is set for a full practice on Wednesday, but he’s no longer the No. 1 quarterback in Chicago. Nagy told reporters at his Wednesday press conference that Justin Fields will start against the Raiders this week and will remain the starting quarterback going forward. “He’s grown to this point. He’s earned it. He’s worked hard. And now he has this opportunity,” Nagy said, via Chris Emma of 670 The Score. It was always a matter of when the first-round pick bypassed Dalton to become the team’s starter and Dalton’s knee injury allowed Fields two-plus games to show what he could do in the lineup. His first start was a nightmare, but things were better in last Sunday’s win over the Lions and Fields will get a chance to grow on the job. PFT
Report: Baker Mayfield playing through partially torn labrum in left shoulder The left shoulder injury Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered in Week Two was a partially torn labrum. That’s the word from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, who reports that the injury will not require surgery “as of now.” The Browns listed Mayfield on their injury report in Week Three but did not list him in Week Four or for yesterday’s first practice of Week Five. Mayfield, however, acknowledged that he’s been wearing a harness on his non-throwing shoulder while saying it shouldn’t affect his throwing ability. While Mayfield says his accuracy hasn’t been affected by the injury, he undeniably has been throwing less accurately recently: He completed 75 percent of his passes in Week One and 90 percent of his passes in Week Two, the game when he suffered the injury. But in Week Three he completed just 61 percent of his passes and in Week Four he was down to 45 percent. PFT
Did anyone actually think he was gonna keep throwing at the accuracy he did in the first two games? Even if he was 100% healthy that completion percentage was gonna come down a lot.
Pete Carroll: Seahawks QB Russell Wilson suffered 'badly sprained finger' Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson injured the middle finger on his throwing hand Thursday night against the Los Angeles Rams and was replaced by Geno Smith in the fourth quarter of the team's 26-17 loss. Following the game, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Wilson suffered a "badly sprained finger" and there is no recovery timetable. "He's got a badly sprained finger that we need to figure out," Carroll said. "There's work to be done in accessing all of that. Russell's one of the great healers of all time and he'll do whatever he can to get back as soon as absolutely possible. The other side of that, Geno did a really good job, very much in command, we were able to do all kinds of things with him out there. He handled all of the communications beautifully and played really well. We had a chance to win the football game with all of that." Wilson did not speak to reporters following the game. Wilson was originally designated as questionable to return, but never came back into the game. He could be seen for the remainder of the contest walking the sideline, gripping a football. Wilson fired a deep pass in the second half, and his hand clipped the wrist of Rams star defensive lineman Aaron Donald as he followed through. Trainers examined the injury on the sideline, as the finger appeared to be out of joint and he returned for a drive, but was then replaced by Smith. Wilson's final drive was a three-and-out that was the last offensive possession for Seattle in the third quarter. Smith took over to begin the final stanza. "He wasn't able to hold onto the football the way he needed to to throw it," Carroll clarified as the determining factor of pulling Wilson from the game. Prior to leaving, Wilson had completed 11 of 16 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. Upon replacing Wilson, Smith drove the Seahawks on a 98-yard scoring drive that culminated with a TD pass to DK Metcalf. Smith finished the game completing 10 of 17 passes for 131 yards, the touchdown and an interception to Nick Scott that essentially sealed the Rams' win. The Seahawks will play the host Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6 on Sunday night. Wilson has started 148 games straight to start his career, which has seen seven Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl won. There will be many sleepless nights ahead in Seattle as the Seahawks look to determine the severity of their quarterback's injury and his availability going forward. NFL.com
Russell Wilson underwent surgery Friday to repair the ruptured tendon in his right middle finger and is expected to be sidelined several weeks, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Teddy Bridgewater will start for Broncos vs. Steelers Broncos quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is good to go today in Pittsburgh. Bridgewater has cleared the concussion protocol and will start today against the Steelers, according to the report. In his first year in Denver, Bridgewater was off to an outstanding start through the first three games of the season. But he was knocked out of the game during the second quarter of Week Four against the Ravens, on a hit that wasn’t flagged but did get Ravens pass rusher Odafe Oweh fined by the league. Drew Lock finished last week’s game for Bridgewater and struggled to move the Broncos’ offense. PFT
LOL you're gonna hear about it for awhile. The "stick to WRs because you can't scout QBs" comment is still fresh.
We noted that Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow told people he was fine before going to the hospital to be checked for a throat contusion on Sunday and it appears doctors drew the same conclusion after examining him. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Burrow checked out fine in those examinations and has been released from the hospital. Burrow was having trouble speaking after the game, which is what led to the trip to the hospital. PFT
Seahawks working out Blake Bortles Blake Bortles may be getting another chance in the NFL. Bortles, the free agent quarterback who has been out of the league this season, is working out with the Seahawks, according to Field Yates of ESPN. Seattle could use another quarterback with Russell Wilson‘s injured finger keeping him out for at least a few weeks. Geno Smith and Jake Luton are the only other quarterbacks currently in Seattle. The 29-year-old Bortles was the third overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft and spent five seasons with the Jaguars. Since leaving Jacksonville he has spent time with the Rams and Broncos, as well as a very brief stint this offseason with the Packers. During his time with the Rams he was coached by Shane Waldron, who is now the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator, which may give him a leg up on learning the Seahawks’ offense if he’s signed. PFT
